Il est probable qu'il composa la Grande Sonate pour Flute á la meme période que las Sonate Pastorale pour Flute donnée á l'occasion des Concerts Promenade de Covent Garden dans les années 1870. La Sonate est pleine de verve de passion et d'esprit et elle possède une richesse mélodique qu'on a comparée á Mendelssohn; elle est si bien écrite pour l'instrument que l'on prend autant de plaisir á la jouer qu'á l'écouter.

The instantly recognisable and ever-popular Méditation from the opera Thaïs by Jules Massenet (1842-1912) remains a strong favourite in the classical repertoire superbly arranged for Flute and Piano by French flautist Paul Taffanel. Massenet first studied music with his mother before entering the Paris Conservatoire. He is best known for his operas of which he composed over thirty. Thaïs was first performed at the Opéra Garnier in Paris in 1894 and continues to be one of the composer's most performed operas. The famous Méditation isan intermezzo originally for Violin and Orchestra which has since been arranged for many different instruments making it a frequent concert piece. The arrangement for Flute and Piano remains in the original key of D major and displays the passionate religious intentions. Taffanel's adaptions include breath marks phrasing changing octaves for some notes and articulation among other aspects. Massenet's Méditation is challenging through its use of lyricism in the upper register yet it remains a favoured and popular piece in the Flute's repertoire.

Le Merle Noir written in 1952 by Olivier Messiaen is a chamber work for Flute and Piano that lasts 5 minutes and is one of the most remarkable pieces of the Flute repertoire. Based on the study of bird songs this piece is very technical and challenging with many details to focus on and would therefore be a fit for advanced students.Le Merle Noir is divided into five sections not officially written and mixed tonal and atonal parts. Each of the section is different to the ones surrounding them and the piece also contains a few Flute solos. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a Frenchorganist and composer passionate about Ornithology and one of the most important composer of his century. Inspired by Japanese music he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity its diatonic aspect its harmony with limited transposition its colour and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong including the 'Bird Catalogue' in 7 volumes and the 'Treatise on rhythm colour and ornithology' in 7 volumes.

Vent was commissioned in 1990 by the American flautist Andrew Sterman and first performed in New York. It is scored for Flute and Piano. The Pulitzer Prize winning American composer David Lang was born in 1957. He is passionate prolific and complicated embodying the restless spirit of invention.
