Antoine de Lhoyer, dans cette Fantaisie opus 33, déploie toujours la même inventivité harmonique, rythmique et mélodique si rares dans la musique pour guitare de cette époque, mais aussi et surtout, une maîtrise de l'art de jouer en duo. Cette ?uvre est un cas presque unique à cette période de la guitare, par sa durée et sa forme en huit mouvements: Allegro moderato, Menuetto, Andante avec quatre variations, Adagio, Menuetto, Polonaise, Romance, Rondo. De Lhoyer réussit pourtant à édifier un ensemble remarquablement cohérent. Car si chaque mouvement peut être joué isolément avec bonheur, l'enchaînement de la totalité laisse apparaître une unicité de l'inspiration. De nombreuses réminiscences d'un mouvement à un autre (motifs et tournures mélodiques, figures ryth-miques), et une succession logique des caractères donnent à l'?uvre le ciment qui justifie sa longueur.
