(+)
Philip Glass has produced ten symphonies so far the ones immediately preceding this one inspired by sources as diverse as Allen Ginsberg poetry Aboriginal writings and Native American song. Symphony No 8 however has noreferences to non-musical materials and takes as its subject according to Glass ‘the language of music itself’.The three-movement work does not conform to classical symphonic form with an extended twenty-minute first movement a slow passacaglia for the second movement and a short dense theme joined by a counter theme then ending with an extended cadence to complete the work in the third movement. Symphony No 8 was commissioned by the BrucknerOrchester Linz under the direction of Dennis Russell Davis.American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of the most celebrated influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referred to as aminimalist though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music with repetitive structures.’ His operas among them the renowned Einstein On The Beach are performed across the globe and he has created work for small andlarge ensembles film and experimental theatre and founded his own performing group The Philip Glass Ensemble.

(+)
George Bernard Shaw once remarked that although there are many composers of music for the Violin there are only a few composers of Violin music. But where Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908) is concerned Shaw declared that the Spanish musician's talents as both a performer and composer 'left criticism gasping miles behind him.' Famous for his fiery forceful and passionate playing Sarasate was equally renowned for the sweetness and purity of his tone and his impeccable technique. As a composer steeped in the colorful music of his native land he was well known for his many Violin works inspired by Spanish airs and dances written to display the instrument'scapabilitie. Carmen Fantasy Op. 25 is Sarasate's much-loved Violin fantasy based on Bizet's Carmen. It includes excerpts of different movements from the Carmen suite including the familiar Habanera and opening movement. Sarasate's popular arrangement and variations on the opera's themes are staples of the Violin repertoire. This full-score version stands as the most affordable available and it offers both performers and listeners extra insights into a celebrated work.Reprint of an early authoritative edition.

(+)
The first of Joaquin Rodrigo's attempts at composition for the concerto genre Concierto De Aranjuez quickly became the most popular and recognizable of his works. Written for Solo Guitar and Orchestra it reveals the composer's great affinity for those two mediums as well as his reverence for the long-standing traditions of Spanish Classical music. It was composed in 1939 after Rodrigo's return to Madrid from France (where he had fled to escape the Spanish Civil War) and premiered to great success in 1940.The Concierto De Aranjuez is notable for the way in which Rodrigo managed to wed unusual instrumentation of the relatively small voice ofthe solo guitar to that of the full orchestra. With a nod to Spanish folk music and straightforward lyrical disposition it is an extremely imaginative piece with meandering melody and distinctive colour throughout.Eulenberg's celebrated and highly authoritative miniature score is the definitive reference source for study performance preparation or simply for those with a love of the great orchestral works.

(+)
Don Juan stands out among Richard Strauss' early tone poems for its almost faultless structure and concise design. This elaborate and considered work helped to establish him as one of the Great German composers when he conducted the premiere of the work himself in November 11 1889. At twenty-four he had written the first masterpiece for which he will be remembered. Taking Nikolaus Lenau’s play as his starting point Strauss fashioned a Symphonic poem which would convey the story of the legendary womanizer. It is a perfect characterisation with exceedingly vivid orchestration use of short motives and intense lyricism. Eulenberg's celebratedand highly authoritative miniature score is the definitive reference source for study performance preparation or simply for those with a love of the great orchestral works.

(+)
FRANZ BERWALD (1796-1868) is regarded today not only as one of Sweden's most important composers but also due to his symphonies and his chamber music as a leading figure in the history of Northern European music of the 19th century. His compositions include in addition to four symphonies and the chamber music tone poems for orchestra concertos operas ('Estrella di Soria' and 'The Queen of Golconda') cantatas solo songs with piano accompaniment piano music and much more.Berwald's violin concerto in C sharp minor is the work of a young composer. The autograph score bears the date 1820; Berwald was 24 years old at the time. After the firstperformance the violin concerto fell into oblivion and was as far as we know never again performed in Berwald's lifetime. It was not brought to light again until 1903 when on May 19 the first movement was performed at the Annual Celebration of the Academy of Music of Stockholm.Urtext of the Berwald Complete EditionFull score (BA4905) and Violin & Piano reduction (BA4905-90) available for salePerformance material (BA4905-72) available for hire

(+)
Chorale (2001 02) for orchestra is a kind of musical meditation on the chorale Es ist genug from Bach?s cantata O Ewigkeit du Donnerwort itself a harmonisation of J R Ahle?s 1662 hymn. Nick Kimberley?s preface outlines the context of the Bach original and refers to Alban Berg?s use of the chorale in his Violin Concerto almost 300 years later. In contrast to both of these works Lindberg?s Chorale has no extra-musical agenda. The composer explains that he took the harmonic structure of the chorale and embedded it in his own harmonies. ?I make an analogy with the rise and fall of the tide. When the tide is in the sea-bed is invisible; but when the tidegoes out you see the rock formation on the sea-bed.?Tribute is a short show-piece for full orchestra composed in 2004 as a gift to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Esa-Pekka Salonen?s debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

“Eine kleine Nachtmusik” “... written with ease, but skillfully refined”...
(+)
“Eine kleine Nachtmusik” “... written with ease, but skillfully refined” “Eine kleine NachtMusick” is how Mozart entered the Serenade in G major in his personal catalogue of works on 10 August 1787. It was written without any known incentive or commission during the time that Mozart was composing “Don Giovanni”, a time when he was celebrating his greatest success as an opera composer. The work is one of the jewels of Mozart’s output, combining bright radiance and a natural simplicity with brilliant refinement. Similarly, the autograph manuscript of this perfect masterpiece is captivating because of its balanced clarity and beautiful handwriting. The manuscript was inaccessible to the public for almost half a century, but now Bärenreiter has received exclusive permission to produce a new facsimile of Mozart’s original. The edition reproduces the facsimile pages as individual sheets and leaves, reflecting the way the original copy has survived. These pages – in high-quality colour printing, each trimmed individually – are presented in a handsome box. This is accompanied by a booklet with an introductory text by Wolfgang Rehm including information on the genesis of the composition and the various aspects of the autograph manuscript. “The fact that it’s all over town does not alter anything in the quality of this occasional piece written with ease but skillfully refined.” (Wolfgang Hildesheimer) BÄRENREITER FACSIMILE The seal is used exclusively for facsimile editions published by Bärenreiter which meet the highest demands in both scholarly and technical terms.
