Clara Wieck’s sincerest wish was that her future husband, Robert Schumann, turn his extraordinary genius toward the larger and more challenging task of composing orchestral music. Confiding in her diary in 1839, just one year before her marriage, she explained that “it would be best if he composed for Orchestra: his imagination cannot find sufficient scope in the Piano…” In the years that followed their marriage Robert Schumann continued to devote much of his attention to Piano music, but he also found the time to comply with his beloved Clara’s wish by creating a number of musical pieces composed specifically for Piano and Orchestra. Although Schumann’s genius is most in evidence in his masterful solo Piano compositions and superb lieder, his lively and provocative imagination manifests itself with equal aplomb in the works composed for Piano and Orchestra. The same compelling romantic and lyrical qualities that captivate lovers of Schumann’s Piano music are evident in these compositions. There is no reference to the origin, occasion or a performance of the Sinfonia concertante in E-flat for Violin, Viola and Orchestra, K. 364 (320d) because in all probability it was composed in Salzburg (presumably in summer or early autumn, 1779): Mozart seems to have had no reason to write about it. It was apparently in Paris that he first had the occasion of giving the genre of the ; Symphonie concertante his special attention. On April 5, 1778, he wrote to his father: ; Now I shall write a sinfonie concertante for flute wendling, oboe Ramm, Punto horn, and Ritter bassoon. Even more discouraging must have been the fact that he had similardifficulties in Paris in having the works performed as he had in Mannheim. After the organizier of the Concerts spirituels, Le Gros, contrary to his promise, did not include the mentioned ; sinfonie concertante in his program. Mozart had no reason to compose any more for this genre in Paris. After Mozart's return to Salzburg, he might have been eager to introduce the new genre there, especially since adequate instrumentalists were available. With his four works 'Le Rouet d'Omphale”, 'Phaéton”, 'Danse macabre” and 'La Jeunesse d'Hercule”, composed between 1872 and 1877, Camille Saint-Saëns decidedly put himself in the tradition of Hector Berlioz, who heralded a new epoch with his 'Symphonie fantastique” premiered in France 1830, as well as the symphonic poems by Franz Liszt, who established the term for this genre in Germany. During Saint-Saëns' lifetime the four 'Poèmes symphoniques” had become part of the repertoire all around the globe. They were recorded numerously - but the piece to hold its ground in the concert halls until today is 'Danse macabre” alone. Suk, Josef Meditation on the Old Czech Hymn St Wenceslas for String Quartet op. 35a Josef Suk played second violin in the Bohemian String Quartet. Since 1914 the ensemble was obliged to perform the Austrian national anthem at the opening of every concert. Suk decided to supplement this obligatory piece with a work inspired by the ancient sacred Bohemian ?St. Wenceslas? hymn. The hymn?s message ? a plea for the well-being of the Czech people, directed at their patron saint ? was immediately understood by the audience. The Bohemian String Quartet performed this single-movement Meditation for the first time on 27 September 1914; the premiere of the version for string orchestra followed on 22 November 1914, played by the Czech Philharmonic. That same year the piece was published by Fr. A. Urbánek together with arrangements for piano and organ. This first Urtext edition, prepared by the Suk scholar Zdenek Nouza, is published in two scorings, one for string quartet (BA 9583; study score TP 583) and another for string orchestra (BA 9584). In 1918 Gabriel Faure, then 73 years old, received a commission from Prince Albert I of Monaco to write stage music invoking the atmosphere of the commedia dell'arte. The four-movement orchestral suite op. 112, consisting of Ouverture, Menuet, Gavotte and Pastorale, combines previously unpublished parts of this stage music. The Pastorale of 1919 was Faure's last composition for orchestra, the Ouverture originated in a piece of 1864 for piano duet and the original version of the Gavotte was written for piano as early as 1869. The op. 112 orchestral suite demonstrates how the composer, now older and more experienced, reworked and improved his earlier music. / Orchestre
