In composing Celestial Wind, Sirota was inspired to write a brilliant toccata based upon Acts 2:2-3: And suddenly there came a sound from heaven of a rushing and mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. Sirotas aim was not merely to imitate the sound of rushing wind and flames, as to evoke the sense of awe and ecstasy that must have been felt by Jesus disciples at this manifestation of the Holy Spirit.

The fact that Hermann Schroeder ranks among the most important composers of Catholic church music in the 20th century shows especially in the simple church music form of the choral setting, e. g. in his setting of the sacred song Unuberwindlich starker Held, Sankt Michael. With his own typical archaic tonal language, Schroeder creates an a cappella choral setting (SATB) in which the dignity and the admiration of the heroic deeds of the Archangel Michael find their musical expression in a very compact form. The underlying melody (GL 924) dates from 1623. The author of the text of the Song of Michael is the German hymn writer Friedrich Spee. A very charming choral setting that can be easily mastered by any church choir; its five verses have to be sung alternately by the choir and the congregation. Apart from the a cappella choral setting, the practical congregational edition also contains a chorale prelude and the organ chorale which can, of course, be used as accompaniment for the congregation, but also for the choral setting.

Fenestral Nocturnes (2020) was commissioned by organist Philip Hartmann to mark the 50th anniversary of the completion of the stained glass windows in the Pauluskirche in Ulm, Germany. The 16 dramatic windows were created by the German artist Klaus Arnold (1928-2009). The three movements take inspiration from several of the windows and Arnold's distinctive postmodern artistic style for portraying the Biblical ideas. (The three movements are: The Damascus Road, The Good Shepherd, and The Eternal City of God)Organ Duration: 15' Composed: 2020 Published by: Zimbel Press.

The Concerto for organ, strings and percussion by Kay Johannsen, Kantor of the Stiftskirche in Stuttgart, is a valuable addition to the repertoire for organ and orchestra. It is a work composed to appeal to both performer and audience alike - with thrilling rhythmic sections as well as moments of great intimacy. The organ part, for a three manual instrument if possible, is shown to its best advantage in many and varied tonal colors, ranging from the most delicate solo registrations to powerful forte. The organ writing is demanding, but well within the capabilities of experienced organists. Precise registration suggestions are contained in the score. The string orchestra (minimum 4/4/3/3/1) is scored with sophistication, with solos for all instruments. The percussion is for two players - a part for timpani and one for other, readily available percussion instruments. By avoiding the use of wind and brass instruments, the work can also be performed where the tuning of the organ is not ideally suited to modern orchestral pitch. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1808500.

During the intensive study of Johann Sebastian Bach's Musical Offering for the creation of a commissioned composition for wind trio, I had the idea of writing a larger organ work on the Royal Theme at the same time. This is how the Three Ricercare came into being. They are multi-part fantasies for organ, which - connected by the frequently transformed thematic material of the Musical Offering and the manifoldly reshaped B-A-C-H motif - alternate between free, rapsodic parts on the one hand and strictly structured parts on the other. For my 60th birthday, W. E. v. Lewinski wrote an appreciation under the title: Music in the span between constraint and freedom. This formulation aptly characterizes the new organ work. Well-chosen music is an essential adjunct to the dignity and reverence of funerals and acts of remembrance, comforting those who mourn, and shining light upon the personality of the departed person. Among these fifteen new arrangements, organists will find a wealth of material from which to select the right piece appropriate to the occasion. There are classics such as Mendelssohn's O rest in the Lord and Handel's Dead March from Saul, romantic masterpieces like Elgar's Nimrod and Mahler's Adagietto, as well as a contemporary favourite, Candle in the Wind, which featured so memorably at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales. A leading arranger and teacher for the organ, John Norris has also included his own Improvisation on Brother James' Air, an arrangement of Sibelius's Finlandia ('Be still, my soul'), and a novelty item The Broken Melody by Auguste van Biene. The collection concludes, appropriately, with Stanford's uplifting Nunc Dimittis from the Evening Service in C.

Bednall's creation, rooted in the tradition of French organ improvisation, tenderly evokes the mysterious beauty of Wells Cathedral's remarkable 'Jesse Window'. The radiant music ebbs and flows calmly, moving through freely expressive passages of rich harmony, before closing with gentle murmurs at the top of the instrument.

The movements of 'Missa di Sant' Anna' were composed over the course of several years, each one for the 'Madchenchor am Essener Dom' (girls' choir of the Cathedral of Essen). The title of the Mass is related to the dedication of the 'Agnus Dei', commemorating the innocent victims of the massacre in the Tuscany village of S. Anna di Stazzema in the year of war 1944 and appreciating the idea and spirit of the peace centre there.'Kyrie' and 'Agnus Dei' are sung solely by the choir a cappella, whereas 'Gloria' and 'Sanctus' are jointly sung by choir and congregation. This exciting piece of music can be performed either with organ accompaniment or with additional brass instruments.
