Mendelssohn produced an early work for Organ in 1837, but it was a London music publishing firm who commissioned the first of his mature Organ works. The second half of the commissioned pieces are published in this volume. Mendelssohn himself saved all his manuscripts and they have survived in libraries in Berlin and Krakow, providing the subtitle of this book.Eleven movements are included here, all written in 1844 and 1845. What were originally commissioned as 'Voluntaries' were changed at the composer's request to 'Sonatas'. Whether one considers these movements as drafts and sketches or as distinct musical entities in their own right, the works are not identical to the final, printed versions. For those who appreciate or study the Mendelssohn Organ oeuvre, this volume is of immense interest.While the Organ never completely fell from grace as the instrument of church and religious music, it is the editor's belief that in the century dividing JS Bach from these works of Mendelssohn, fashion and church practice had greatly diminished its importance and few works of real note were produced. Par GRAY ALAN. The four organ sonatas of Alan Gray (1855-1935) stand as one of the largest contributions to the sonata repertoire by an English composer. Published around 1890, they also mark an advancement in the repertoire of potential concert works. Gray had not studied abroad and his sonatas demonstrate a compelling emergence of a distinctly English style of organ sonata after almost half a century of continental influence. All four sonatas show a strong command of not only writing for the instrument but also the art of registration. Gray?s indications are clear, logical, and practical. He writes for a symphonic organ of at least three manuals but many of the pieces could be played on an instrument of only two manuals. The Husum Organ Book from 1758 documents in a unique way how north-German organ music developed in the first half of the 18th century in the generations following Dieterich Buxtehude and Vincent Lübeck. It contains 17 original works from northern Germany. Twelve of these works are concertos in three or four movements for unaccompanied organ. Dirksen has since published many studies on, and editions of, several masters of the 17th century (Sweelinck, Bull, Cornet, Scheidt, Scheidemann, Buxtehude, Luebeck, Johann Christoph Bach) as well as Johann Sebastian Bach. In collaboration with Harald Vogel, he edited Sweelinck's Complete Works for Keyboard Instrument (4 volumes, Breitkopf and Härtel). Dirksen is a member of the academic board of the Bach-Jahrbuch as well as a sought-after harpsichordist, organist and continuo player in international ensembles. He has taught in Bochum, Marburg, Detmold, Cologne and Hamburg, and has been a freelance contributor to various music periodicals. 'Mors et vita' - death and life. This antithesis opens a stanza of the ancient 11th-century Easter sequence 'Victimae paschali laudes', where life and death are locked in mutual struggle. Zsigmond Szathmary's 12-minute composition of 2015, commissioned for the Freiburg Minster, interprets this primal human experience with mighty explosions of sound. Here the organ can show what it's capable of: its grandeur and strength are fully exploited, but not at the expense of soft and gentle contrasts. Typical of Szathmary's compositional style is the alternation of seemingly improvised, recitative-like writing and passages in strict rhythm. Time and again the composer takes up elements from the church hymn 'Christ ist erstanden von der Marter alle' (Christ the Lord is risen again). / Orgue

Né à Beyrouth et formé au Conservatoire de Paris, l'organiste et compositeur Naji Hakim (né en 1955) a remporté de nombreux prix à la fois comme créateur et comme un artiste. Après avoir travaillé comme organiste à Paris depuis de nombreuses années, par exemple en tant que successeur d'Olivier Messiaen à La Trinité, il a été compositeur en résidence à la Royal Academy of Music de Londres depuis 2004.
