The young Mozart composed three settings of the Regina Coeli an ancient Latin Marian hymn of the Catholic church. Bach composed his oratorio for the Feast of the Ascension in Leipzig in 1735. Though this work has the duration of a cantata, the choice of text places it among the oratorios. WAB 24. Par BRUCKNER ANTON. What does early Bruckner sound like? The Magnificat in B flat major casts a completely unexpected light on the young composer, on the threshold of composing his great church works. Around 5 minutes in length, and in the spirit of Mozart, it was written in 1852 for a service at the Monastery Church of St. Florian. With its concise form and scoring for small forces it offers many opportunities for use. Bernard of Offida 1604 1694 was a Capuchin monk whose saintly life and devotion to the sick and poor caused him to be beatified by Pope Pius VI on 19 May 1795. St. Bernard?s name day falls on the 11th of September (a Saturday in 1797) and it is generally thought that Haydn combined doing honour to the Capuchin monk with the production of a new Mass for his patron the day thereafter.Apparently later performances in Eisenstadt added horns to double the trumpets in the tuttis and just as in the previous Mass the clarinet parts were enlarged; it is almost certain that the new clarinet parts are either by Haydn or (shall we say) ?supervised? by him. As inthe Mass in Time of War conductors have the choice of two orchestrations: with or without doubling horns and with or without the supplementary clarinet parts.The Heiligmesse has always been one of Haydn?s most admired works. Of the three oratorios which Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach composed when he was music director in Hamburg, Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu is particularly intended to create splendor and effect with its use of magnificent-sounding trumpets and timpani. Bach liked this work very much and had it published in 1787, the year before his death. The following year the oratorio was performed by Mozart in Vienna.The text of the oratorio by Carl Wilhelm Ramler (1725?1798; better known as the poet of the frequently-set ?Der Tod Jesu?) covers the Easter story of the disciples at Emmaus and the doubting Thomas, up to the image of Jesus ascending to heaven.The score is published as Vol. IV,2 of the C.P.E.
