Paperback full score. The New Bach Edition (NBA) volume of J. S. Bach?s Mass in B Minor BWV 232 has been the definitive edition for generations of singers and musicians. However the Bach Archive Leipzig in conjunction with Bärenreiter are constantly striving to bring new discoveries of editorial research to the fore. It is precisely for this reason that a new revised edition of the Mass in B Minor will now appear. The Urtext performing edition is based on the first volume of the new 15 volume series New Bach Edition-Revised (NBA rev).

Ballet héroïque en un prologue et quatre actes-?Za s? was Rameau?s first opera...
(+)
Ballet héroïque en un prologue et quatre actes-?Za s? was Rameau?s first opera which was entirely devoted to ?la féerie? the enchanted world of myth from the Middle East with its spirits and fantastic creatures. It was first performed on 29 February 1748 at the Paris Opera and was much praised for its expressive power elegance and variety of its music as well as for the charm of its ballet. Although the libretto by Louis de Cahusac was criticised the delightful work proved very popular: it was revived in 1761 and 1769 and for more than two decades received over 100 performances. Like most of Rameau?s operas ?Za s? was extensively revised during the composer?s lifetime and afterwards. Revisions already beganduring the first rehearsals and continued until the first performance. The composer and the librettist Cahusac finally used the Easter period in 1748 to work on those revisions; as well as structural changes and musical substitutions these included some substantial additions to vocal and instrumental movements. The version which was performed after Easter is more convincing both musically and dramatically. In contrast the revivals of 1761 and 1769 the first after Cahusac?s death the second after Rameau?s contained drastic cuts including the entire prologue. For the new volume in the ?Opera Omnia Rameau? the version from Easter 1748 has been chosen as the primary source. For performances a choice can be made between this and the original version; a series of insertions links all the passages with another.

Les Troyens - The Trojans: Opera in 5 ActsBerlioz composed Les Troyens towards the end of his life drawing on Virgil?s epic poem The Aeneid which he had admired since his childhood. In his Memoirs he recounts how his father a country doctor read Virgil to him and how the story of Dido?s tragic fate reduced him to tears which he tried hard to conceal. The score was finished in April 1858 but he was unable to persuade the Paris Opera to mount it (his earlier opera Benvenuto Cellini had been a failure there in 1838) and eventually he agreed to allow the last three acts to be performed under the title Les Troyens Carthage. This took place at theThé tre-lyrique an enterprising but ill-equipped theatre in November 1863 and although it was much admired there were no more performances before Berlioz?s death in 1869.In the history of French music Les Troyens stand out as a grand opera that avoided the shallow glamour of Meyerbeer and Halévy but therefore paid the price of long neglect. In our own time the opera has finally come to be seen as one of the greatest operas of the 19th century. The vocal score to ?Les Troyens? presents the text Berlioz conceived as a great five act opera. During the composition of this work between 1856 and 1858 and up until June 1863 Berlioz perceived ?Les Troyens ? as one opera. Because of performance difficulties the composition had to be divided into two operas ?La Prise de Troie? and ?Les Toyens Carthage?.The vocal score is based on the three-volume New Berlioz Edition and also on the one-volume vocal score edition that under Berlioz?s supervision was privately printed in 1861-62 and then distributed. The appendix contains two complete scenes: The Sinon scene from the first act and the original finale from the fifth act.Urtext of the New Berlioz EditionFull score (BA5442) and vocal score (BA5442-90) available for salePerformance material (BA5442-72) available for hire

Samson an oratorio for soloists mixed chorus and orchestra by George Frideric Handel libretto by Newburgh Hamilton after Milton’s Samson Agonistes. Edited by Donald Burrows. This latest addition to the Novello Handel Edition is the first complete modern edition of the composer’s longest oratorio prepared after examination of all known contemporary sources both music and word-books. The publication embodies the complete text known to have been performed at the Covent Garden premiere in 1743 as well as identifying the later shorter versions and additions performed regularly by Handel and an Appendix of allfurther variants created by him and performed during his lifetime. It is thus a comprehensive and flexible edition for between four and eight soloists with an abundance of choral writing and some of Handel’s most sublime writing for voices.Includes an historical preface extensive notes on the performance of the different versions and useful practical notes on the interpretation of Handel.

(+)
Dramma per musica in three acts-La Calisto one of Cavalli?s most frequently performed operas today was premiered in Venice in 1651 but didn?t achieve its first real breakthrough until the 20th century. The foundation for this success may be the rediscovery of the dramaturgic and musically masterful construction: Faustini interwove several mythological models; the love between the Nymph Kallisto and Jupiter and between Diana and the shepherd Endymion as well as Kallisto?s transformation into a bear and his emanation as a well-known constellation. Numerous amusing minor roles are included and Cavalli succeeded in combining the various storylines and characters to produce an effective musically cohesive whole. This first volume of the new Bärenreiter series of the works of Cavalli presents a critical edition of the musical text and libretto complete with an English translation and provides a comprehensive insight into the development of the genre in Italian opera life of the 17th century.Performance material available for hire.

(+)
Handel wrote the famous Dixit Dominus with the text of Psalm 109 during his time in Italy in c. 1707. Although he was only 22 years old the work already demonstrates his wide spectrum of compositional abilities which are later fully realized in his operas and oratorios. Central to this work are the six choral movements which with their polyphonic structure are closely related to German choral music of the 17th century. The first Urtext edition BA 4002 based on the Halle Handel Edition was published in 1960. At that time no critical commentary was published so that in cases of doubt the basis on which editorialdecisions were made was not officially recorded. A new complete edition volume (BA 10704/01) due to be published in 2013 will include a detailed foreword providing information on the genesis and the first performance of this work as well as information on the psalm on which this work is based and on performance practice. In addition several facsimiles pages will be included giving a view into the source material. The critical commentary will provide a detailed insight into all the available sources and how they have been passed down. This newly revised Urtext performing edition offers a thorough revision of this frequently-performed work and meets all the requisites of a scholarly-critical edition. Former readings in the old edition regarding a small number of pitches but mostly basso continuo figures and the underlying text have now been able to be amended on the basis of the new findings. In the new edition the work appears in nine movements no longer eight which reflects the composer's intentions. The new performance material is not compatible with the old one.Presented in a revised Urtext editionClear straightforward Piano reduction in the vocal scoreUrtext of the Halle Handel EditionFull score performance material (BA10704) & Vocal score (BA10704-90) available for sale

Romantische Opera in three acts-Alfonso und Estrella D 732Romatic Opera in 3 ActsIn late September or early October 1821 Schubert and his close friend Franz von Schober vacationed in the countryside of Lower Austria. Their first stopover was at Ochsenburg Castle which belonged to the Bishop of St. Pölten (a close relative of Schober?s) after which they moved on to St. Pölten itself. Roughly a year earlier two stage works by Schubert had been performed in Vienna: the one-act singspiel Die Zwillingsbrüder and the melodrama Die Zauberharfe. The librettos were both written by the seasoned Viennese playwright Georg von Hofmann who blamed the press for the indifferent reception the two works weregiven by the audience. Schubert and Schober now decided it would seem to write a grand romantic opera uninfluenced by the workaday world of the theatre and beholden solely to their own ideas of what an opera should be.Not until 24 June 1854 was the opera finally performed in Weimar under the baton of Franz Liszt. It only achieved success however in an arrangement by Johann Nepomuk Fuchs that was staged on many German and Austrian stages in 1881 2 allegedly with 'brilliant acclaim'.Urtext of the New Schubert EditionFull score (BA5540) and vocal score (BA5540-90) available for salePerformance material (BA5540-72) available for hire

Critical Commentary-With final chorus 'An die Freude' (Ode to Joy)Between 1996 and 2000 Bärenreiter published scholarly-critical editions of Beethoven's Nine Symphonies edited by the first class musicologist Jonathan Del Mar. The editorial process was a huge undertaking because of the complex source situation regarding Beethoven's Symphonies culminating in the Choral Symphony which came down to us in nearly 20 different sources. So it was not surprising that Bärenreiter's new Urtext edition caused a considerable stir in the music world. Since publication Del Mar's edition enjoys the unabashed praise of conductors performers and critics alike and has become the most widelyused publication of the Beethoven Symphonies which can be heard not only every day in concert halls but also on CD recordings by John Eliot Gardiner David Zinman Jos van Immerseel and Claudio Abbado.Full scores study scores and complete performance material to Beethoven?s Nine Symphonies are available for sale.Full score & performance material (BA9009) study score format 22.5 x 16.5cm (TP909) & vocal score (BA9009-90) available for saleDetailed Critical Commentary (English) documents all the sources and findings made by the editor.

No group of works in Johann Sebastian Bach’s output is as wide-ranging as the cantatas. This is hardly surprising considering that for over five years Bach was required to compose a work or at least re-work an existing one for every Sunday and festival of thechurch year as well as for numerous secular occasions such as council inaugurations school and university celebrations and royal birthdays. Unfortunately not all cantatas have survived. However over 200 sacred and secular works exist and form a corpus of works suitable for all possible occasions. This rich musical heritage is still as relevant today as it was then.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy completed his first oratorio St. Paul Op.36 in 1836 at the age of twenty-seven. The first version which was premiered on 22 May 1836 was then extensively revised by the composer. This second version which at the same time served as the basis for the published version was premiered as early as October that year in Birmingham. The acclaim with which the oratorio was received was exceptional. Within eighteen months of completing the score Mendelssohn was able to list fifty performances of the work. Robert Schumann praised the work effusively and even Richard Wagner who later denigrated Mendelssohn was full of admiration.
