Joby Talbot's Trumpet Concerto Desolation Wilderness was commissioned by the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. First performed on 28th October 2006 by the Royal LiverpoolPhilharmonic Orchestra at The Philharmonic Hall Liverpool with Alison Balsom (to whom the work is dedicated) as soloist and JoAnn Falletta conductor. The Turku Philharmonic Orchestra gave the Finnish premiére performances on23rd and 24th November 2006.The Piano reduction of Desolation Wilderness includes Trumpet parts in B flat and C. (Suitable for advanced players).'In Early November 2005 my family and some friends visited thehigh Sierra Nevada in Northern California. As on former trips to the area I was struck by the strange and disarming contrast between the bright sunshine perfect blue sky and warm mountain air of the Sierran autumn; and theoccasional icy chill - sudden drops of temperature when the sun vanished behind the mountains momentary glimpses through the trees of distant snow clouds over the highest peaks. Nowhere was this dichotomy more apparent than inthe vast area of forests lakes and mountains known as Desolation Wilderness. Here the twisted shapes of the aspens are testament to the destructive power of winter. Sure enough that night the first snows fell and the highmountain passes we'd just crossed were closed till spring.

Written in 1803 by Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) this Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major is a classical piece of the Trumpet repertoire. Composed in the spirit of Mozart and initially for the keyed-Trumpet it was re-discovered in 1958 by a Yale student after 150 years of inertia due to the obsolescence of the instrument for which it was made. This edition offers a transposition in E-flat Major (initially in E Major) adapted to the instruments in use today. The other instruments to be involved in this concerto are a Flute two Oboes two Clarinets two Bassoons two Horns Timpani and Strings. Hummel?s Trumpet Concerto begins with an orchestra onlyfirst movement in a sonata theme which is repeated with the inclusion of the soloist. This Allegro Spirito sounds reminiscent of the Haffner Symphony (No. 35 in D Major) by Mozart but distinguished itself by a second theme. The second movement Andante is more melodic with the trumpet which holds long notes. Finally the Rondo offers a blissful and bright end to the Concerto. Former student of Mozart Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) was a brilliant composer pianist conductor and teacher. Evolving at the same period as Beethoveen he became as famous as him and wrote numerous concertos (for Piano Oboe Trumpet Violin and others) operas and some wind music pieces.

Hummel who early in his career became well-known in Vienna as a brilliant pianist studied with Mozart Albrechtsberger Salieri and Haydn and soon earned a high reputation as a composer. His style of composition derived from the classical precepts of his teachers: Mozart's influence is clearly discernible even in his later years. However as time progressed Hummel adopted elements from the emerging romanticism of the day and increasingly turned to a highly figurative style with a level of virtuosity which though appealing in its brilliance often served as an end in itself. Historically his piano music bridges the gap between that of Mozart and Chopin forming a transitionbetween the classical tradition and the fashionable style of the musical salon.The Concerto For Trumpet And Orchestra dates from quite an early period in Hummel's career and was composed in 1803. In its three-movement design its formal layout and its melodic and harmonic workmanship the work still lies fully within the bounds of the classical tradition. This edition for Trumpet and Piano has been arranged by Martin Focke and the Solo Trumpet part which is also included on a separate insert has been edited by Joachim Pliquett.Note that the original key is in E major and that this version has been transposed down a half-tone as to make the piece performable on a B-flat trumpet.

This edition is more user-friendly than the others currently available. The accompanying CD provides piano accompaniments as well as samples from recordings of the Neruda Haydn and Hummell concerti with kind permission of Hyperion Records and Crispian Steele-Perkins.J.G.B. Neruda (1711-1780) was typical of 18th century musicians travelling and studying in various parts of Eastern Europe and finally settling in Dresden (1750-1780) in the Electoral (chapel) orchestra where he was salaried as a violinist and occasional composer. This concerto was originally composed for a Corno da Caccia (hunting horn) presumed to be something of a hybrid between the natural hornand natural trumpet but has been borrowed by modern trumpet players and is now firmly fixed in the Classical trumpet repertoire.This edition is intended to be more user-friendly than the others currently available: there is a much easier (and dare I say more stylistic) piano accompaniment - any doubling of the solo part has been removed voicing simplified and my premise has been to imagine what it might have been before it was orchestrated rather than trying to cram in every last piece of orchestral detail. Suggested cuts have been indicated which give a short introduction to each movement perfect for auditions recitals or exams. However the bar numbers still tally with the longer original versions which are included should they be required.The dynamics and articulation which I have added incorporate the weight of opinion in current editions and recordings offering more guidance than 'scholarly' editions without being over-prescriptive. There is an appendix with suggested interpretation of trills. Listening to as many different recordings as possible is the best way to assimilate good trills. Johann Stamitz is considered the founding father of the Mannheim school of musical innovation. His two sons Carl and Anton were important members of the group as well. He was instrumental in setting the four-movement symphonic structure and the sonata form.Concertmaster of the Orchestra in Mannheim Stamitz wrote more than fifty symphonies and many other works. This work has been credited to Stamitz though he wrote little for the Trumpet and the title page of the work bears no signature. Some scholars believe the work to be that of Johann Georg Holzbogen. It has been recorded however as Concerto in D for Trumpet and the missing parts have been reconstructed bycomposer and arranger Alan Boustead.The style of the work falls in the time between our later delineations of the Baroque and Classical eras and the writing is typical energetic with quite an exciting solo part for the Trumpet.

To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments despite being a violinist himself. His Rhapsodie for Trumpet with Piano accompaniment is no exception to the composer's success. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire Bozza won prizes for Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1957 Bozza's Rhapsodie is adaptableto both B flat and C Trumpet and addresses advanced features including complex rhythms quick tempos and articulation. As music educationalist Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions 'his works reveal melodic fluency elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.'

In making this piano reduction the arranger has attempted to retain as much of the original version (for string orchestra and harpsichord) as possible to give the soloist a clear idea of what is going on in the orchestra. Therefore certain passages especially in the third movement Elegy are rather tricky and not always easily playable. The composer’s suggests omitting some of the notes in the chords if required or for example when a chord is repeated in succession to play the chord in full on the beat but to play only the outer notes of the chord after the beat. Where necessary spread chords can be played as marked.
