With his four works 'Le Rouet d'Omphale”, 'Phaéton”, 'Danse macabre” and 'La Jeunesse d'Hercule”, composed between 1872 and 1877, Camille Saint-Saëns decidedly put himself in the tradition of Hector Berlioz, who heralded a new epoch with his 'Symphonie fantastique” premiered in France 1830, as well as the symphonic poems by Franz Liszt, who established the term for this genre in Germany. During Saint-Saëns' lifetime the four 'Poèmes symphoniques” had become part of the repertoire all around the globe. They were recorded numerously - but the piece to hold its ground in the concert halls until today is 'Danse macabre” alone. Camille Saint-Saëns was justifiably proud of his Symphony No. 3 in C minor op. 78, dedicated to the memory of Franz Liszt. Like Beethoven’s Ninth, this so-called “Organ Symphony” was commissioned by the Philharmonic Society in London, where itreceived its premiere on 19 May 1886. In this first scholarly-critical edition of the symphony, a great many inconsistencies and mistakes inherent in the previously used edition have been unveiled and corrected. The edition of Symphony No. 3 marks the launch of a large-scale project: the publication of “Camille Saint-Saëns - Complete Edition of the Instrumental Works”. Considered throughout much of his career as the preeminent French composer, Camille Saint-Saëns wrote music that embodies a characteristic French concern for clarity and order, together with his own assured mastery of the composer's craft. These qualities are evident in Saint-Saëns' Symphony No. 3, widely regarded as the composer's major orchestral work, and one of the very few to incorporated the organ as a featured instrument. Saint-Saëns wrote this symphony during the period of his greatest creativity — in the 1870s and '80s — at which time he also produced such important works as the opera Samson et Dalila, Le Carnaval des animaux, the Piano Concerto No. 4, and the Violin Concerto No. 3. Symphonic poem after a poem by Henri Cazalis. Par SAINT-SAENS CAMILLE. Saint-Saëns was a great admirer of the symphonic poems by Franz Liszt. His own symphonic poem 'Danse macabre' reflects not only his affinity to medieval superstitions but also constitutes a tribute to Liszt's 'Totentanz'. 'Danse macabre' is based on the eponymous song Saint-Saëns composed in 1872 after Henri Cazalis' poem. At its premiere, the work was not well-received: in fact it was booed, possibly due to the 'diabolic' solo violin playing on an E-string that was tuned down to E-flat, which the audience might have misinterpreted as being out of tune. However within ten years the work had become so popular that Saint-Saëns quoted some of its musical themes in 'The Carnival of the Animals'. Since the composer's death, 'Danse macabre' is among the works most often mentioned in connection with the theatrical face of death found in popular mortuary cult. / Date parution : 2019-11-29/ Répertoire / Orchestre

Conçu en tant que pièce humoristique de circonstance à l’occasion du concert de Carnaval de son ami le violoncelliste Charles-Joseph Lebouc en mars 1886, le Carnaval des Animaux obtint un tel succès que Saint-Saëns en demanda, peu de temps après, l’interdiction d’exécution et de publication. Il craignait, de fait, que cette «Grande Fantaisie zoologique» - consistant en 14 courtes pièces pour onze instruments - ne vînt faire de l’ombre à ses compositions sérieuses. Cinq mois seulement après la mort du compositeur, elle fut quand même imprimée et entreprit alors - dans sa version originale comme sous forme d’innombrables arrangements - son cortège victorieux dans le monde entier. C’est ainsi que le Carnaval devint alors l’œuvre véritablement la plus populaire du compositeur français, tandis que son originalité musicale lui permet d’être abordée fréquemment dans l’enseignement musical ou jouée par des orchestres d’élèves.
