Born in Parma Italy Toscanini (1867-1954) was internationally recognized as the most gifted conductor of his time famous for his definitive interpretation of operatic and symphonicrepertoire. In 1936 Toscanini wasforced into exile at the height of his career for his refusal to become part of Mussolinis Fascist regime. The 70-year-old sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to the island of Manhattan where hecast his magic spell upon all who heard him conduct.Under his baton the NBC Symphony was heard by millions of listeners and through his live radio broadcasts and recordings “Maestro Toscanini” became a householdname in America. It is a swinging tribute to an earlierepoch when legendary entertainers like Elvis Presley Peggy Lee Esquivel Bobby Darin Stan Kenton and Frank Sinatra's “Rat Pack” performed in the intimate swanky showrooms of the Sands Tropicana and Flamingohotels in Las Vegas Nevada. Torn down long ago the cozy nightclubs – where the Rat Pack once performed edgy material – have been replaced by large arenas where commercialized family entertainment is now presented.Daugherty's composition for symphonic band is a trip down Memory Lane to an adventurous and vibrant Vegas that once was – and returns if only for a moment in Lost Vegas. Vulcan for Concert Band is Grammy award winning composer Michael Daughertys first work for the high school and intermediate level college band. The work is a colorful homage to Gene Roddenberrys interstellar universe as depicted in the classicAmerican television series Star Trek (1966-69). The title refers to the fiery planet Vulcan home world of half-human half-Vulcan Mr. Spock. As the rational-minded science officer aboard the starship Enterprise (commanded by the hot-bloodedCaptain James T. Kirk) Mr. Spock grapples with the ?fascinating? predicament of making decisions predicated on human emotion versus Vulcan logic. Daugherty has composed stirring yet highly structured music that alludes to the Vulcan ?Pon Farr?ritual Vulcan telepathic mind-melds and the volcanic planet itself. At the the Ann Arbor Michigan world premiere (utilizing the combined forces of the Pioneer Huron and Skyline High School bands) Vulcan was an immediate hit and willsurely become one of Daughertys most performed works.

Set in a distinctive medium swing/shuffle groove, Michaels version for young ensembles presents a contemporary styling of this classic song from Porgy and Bess®. Mixing a variety of ensemble textures, a stop time solosection, and briefly slipping into a new key during the final chorus, this is sure to be a standout for festival or casual concert use. Citons ...prisme / incidences... pour violon et orchestre (1998), Assonance IX pour clarinette et orchestre (2000), le concerto pour piano Abschied (2001), Epigraphe pour accordéon et orchestre (2003), ou encore Sillages, avec flûte, hautbois et clarinette solistes, joué en première mondiale pendant la saison 2005-2006 de l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Sa toute dernière création ...un temps de silence..., met cette fois la flûte seule en vedette. 'Ce n'est pas un concerto à proprement parler, mais un peu plus que les autres quand même !', confie avec malice le compositeur genevois (entretien réalisé par Luca Sabbatini en février 2007 à Genève). 'Bien sûr, il n'y a pas de hiérarchie traditionnelle soliste/accompagnement. La flûte doit constamment trouver sa place. L'orchestre ne joue pas un rôle de faire-valoir, il possède son autonomie. En cela, ...un temps de silence... est plus proche de mon concerto pour piano que de ...prisme / incidence..., où tout venait du violon.' Comme le titre le suggère, la musique de cette nouvelle oeuvre tend vers sa propre dissolution. 'J'ai voulu faire entendre différents types de silence', confirme Michael Jarrell. 'On ne peut les percevoir qu'en variant les contextes. Le silence n'est pas le même après un seul accord ou après une cascade de notes.' Plusieurs idées temporelles d'affrontent. L'une, très pulsée, naît de l'orchestre et se transmet à la flûte. Une autre correspond à 'des moments hors du temps, qui glissent vers le silence'. La virtuosité exigée du soliste atteint des niveaux de difficulté proprement diaboliques. 'Emmanuel Pahud est venu me rendre visite et nous avons travaillé sur ce qu'il était possible de faire à la flûte', raconte le compositeur. 'La partition est écrite sur mesure, en tenant compte des capacités d'Emmanuel.' ...un temps de silence... s'ouvre sur trois accords marqués des cordes, percussion, harpe et piano, qui reviendront trois fois de façon audible, mais orchestrés différemment. Ces accords génèrent également 'l'harmonie fantôme' sur laquelle repose l'oeuvre. L'orchestre installe peu à peu une pulsation régulière, ce qui 'plonge la flûte dans une situation de stress', selon Michael Jarrell. Elle s'accroche, tente de rattraper l'orchestre, court après lui à bride abattue. La subtilité de la mise en place, avec de nombreux échanges ou superpositions rapides entre soliste et orchestre, rend tout le passage périlleux. Un grand tutti introduit la partie centrale, où les protagonistes entrent en symbiose sur un tempo très lent, qui dérive peu à peu vers un 'hors temps' énigmatique. Puis le silence. La dernière partie repart au galop, mais cette fois c'est la flûte qui dicte son rythme à l'orchestre, qui devient l'axe autour duquel tous les autres instruments tournent. L'orchestre finit par prendre le dessus dans ce jeu du chat et de la souris, au cours d'un épisode d'environ une minute, mené à une vitesse vertigineuse. Deux des trois accords du début reviennent, puis se diluent sur un tempo lent, où les percussions, notamment le bongo, dominent. Michael Jarrell cite alors son propre opéra Galilée, créé au Grand Théâtre de Genève la saison dernière: soutenu par trois rins japonais et quelques instruments, un woodblock aigu joue une pulsation régulière, sur laquelle la flûte vient poser ses commentaires. L'harmonie fait du sur place, le temps se fige, comme un arrêt sur image. La musique ne disparaît pas dans le silence. Elle est devenue son négatif, son ombre, son souffle. This song was performed during Michael?s first solo world tour that started from Japan (Korakuen Stadium) in September 1987. The short film directed by Martin Scorsese also generated great publicity. In particular the animated group dance scene in the subway made a huge impact on the viewers and distinguished Michael?s image. As the video depicts ?bad? in this song?s lyrics indicate the kicking cool unruly living on thestreets.
