Each time you turn a corner you will be dazzled by yet another magnificent vista. The Red Rock areas in Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico formed millions of years ago when that part of North America was primarily under water. The water left behind the shells and skeletons of sea creatures that gradually turned into limestone and similar rocks. Beginning 225 million years ago, the earth's crust began to move and the seabed slowly rose. Streams entering the shallow water deposited mud and sand that turned into shale and marine sandstone. As the land continued to rise and dry out, some of the rocks oxidized (combined with oxygen) and turned red in color. Subsequently the area was covered with sands that eventually compressed into what is called Aztec sandstone. During the Jazz age of the 1920's, the cat's pajamas referred to anything special, unique or cool. Musically speaking, the image of a cat in pajamas might suggest combining low clarinets (reminiscent of Prokofiev's use of a clarinet to describe the cat in Peter And The Wolf) with a jaunty little tune in ragtime style, adding a few instrumental meows, and you have (what else?): The Cat’s Pajamas: A Felicitous Feline Ragtime Novelty! Composer James Reese Europe, one of the most famous African-American musicians of his day, was called the Martin Luther King of music by pianist Eubie Blake. The first African-American bandmaster in the United States Army, Europe gained great popularity as a dance band leader, a military band leader, recording artist, and a composer of merit. Known in New York music circles, and also for touring Europe with his National Guard band, Europe is remembered today for composing several works, including Castles In Europe with the subtitle The Innovation Trot - Ragtime March. This delightful work is arranged for todayâ??s concert band by Chandler L. Wilson. An enjoyable ragtime work from an American composer to be remembered!

This lively, nostalgic piece will musically transport players and audience alike to the iconic amusement parks of turn-of -the-century Coney Island (near Brooklyn, New York). The sweet, cheerful sounds that flowed from the carousels and bandwagons of a time gone by infuse this characteristic, but level-appropriate work. Ragtime feel is achieved via accessible syncopations, chromatics that lay well on the instruments, and sectional form. Novel percussion, including a slide whistle, adds to the fun! (2:35).

Folk hero Billy Miner (the Grey Fox) was the last of the old-time bandits. He was noted for his unusual politeness and is believed to be the originator of the phrase, Hands up! This composition is like a mini movie score and starts with the Billy Miner ragtime theme, followed by a train robbery, his capture, and final release.
