Symphony No. 3 (1972-1975) by Per Nørgård. Per Nørgård's third symphony commissioned by The Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra (conductor Herbert Blomstedt) was premiered in Copenhagen in 1976 and received wide attention. The work gives comprehensive expression to a new realm of musical experience which the composer began to explore toward the end of the 1960s. While the first period in Nørgårds production in the 1050s represents his personal interpretation of the Nordic music tradition – evidenced for example in his “Piano Sonata No. 2” (1957) and“Constellations” for chamber orchestra (1958) – and the second period in the 1960s saw him working with serial techniques musical collage and a new sound-palette - especially in the orchestral works “Iris” (196-67) and “Luna” (1967) – with “Voyage into the Golden Screen” (1968) Nørgård arrived at a new compositional technique based on the use of a special form of a so-called “infinity series” a principle of musical motion to be applied to all kinds of scales (chromatic diatonic et cetera). It is characteristic that that Nørgård in the 1970s chose to cultivate diatonic infinity series already evident in the mythological opera “Gilgamesh” (1971-72). Thus the Symphony No. 3 begun directly after the opera combines the infinity series major and minor scales the partial series of natural harmonics and “sub-harmonics” (Nørgårds terminology) with rhythmic patterns based on the Golden Section (the Golden Mean) in a nexus of synchronous yet disparate elements which serve the composers vision of musical coherence.. The works which followed the symphony – the operas “Siddharta” (1975-79) and “The Divine Circus” (1981-82) and Symphony No. 4 (1981) – usher a new

(+)
Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on ?Der Freischütz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as ?Preciosa', ?Oberon', and ?Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music - cantatas, odes and other occasional works - stage works - lieder and vocal works - orchestral works - chamber music - music for piano - piano reductions - miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations - works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references. / Piano Et Orchestre

Par SENFTER JOHANNA. The number of well-known clarinet quintets is quite small. The only major composers whose clarinet quintets are relatively widespread are Mozart, Brahms, Weber and Reger. The composer Johanna Senfter (1879-1961) from Oppenheim admired the music of Johannes Brahms and of Max Reger who was her teacher. Her chamber music œuvre conveys a certain closeness to the clarinet. She even wrote a Sonata for clarinet, viola, horn and piano, op. 37, a Sonata for clarinet or viola and piano, op. 57, as well as a Trio for clarinet, horn and piano, op. 60. Continuing the historic line of Brahms and Reger, the clarinet quintet is steeped in the harmony, compositional style and expressiveness of her teacher Reger - a style which she developed even further and increased in expressiveness. This quintet is, without doubt, a valuable addition to the repertoire./ Répertoire / Clarinette et Quatuor à Cordes

Gluck Complete Edition V/2. Par GLUCK CHRISTOPH WILLIBALD. While Christoph Willibald Gluck dedicated his artistic life almost entirely to the composition of works for the opera stage, he also produced a number of instrumental works which have been somewhat marginalized until recently. This volume of the 'Gluck Complete Edition” (GGA) is the first to present 17 symphonies attributed to Gluck in a historical-critical edition - furthermore, the volume includes a new version of one of the trio sonatas published in 1961 as part of the GGA. Current research indicates that no reliable information about the genesis of the respective works exists for any of the symphonies attributed to Gluck. This is due to a lack of both autograph sources and reliable data pertaining to the history and first performances of these works. It is assumed that some of the existing symphonies might in fact be the lost overtures of Gluck's earlier operas. Others were possibly written to be performed in private or public concerts. The greatest challenge for the editors of this volume was posed by the question of authenticity and authorship of the works presented here. As no autographs exist for any of the symphonies bearing Gluck's name, the only indicators of authorship are attributions in the copies of score and parts, either original or added at a later time. The reliability of these attributions for individual works largely depends on the respective state of source material, meaning available sources as well as the condition of the respective copy. A thorough authenticity analysis concluded Gluck's authorship as valid in the case of 13 symphonies, while in the case of four other symphonies, diverging attributions lead to the acceptance of open authorship. As a result, this volume includes all compositions for which, according to the most current research, Gluck's authorship has not been refuted. In the case of two symphonies, one concerto for flute, and six trio sonatas published in 1961 as part of the GGA, Gluck's authorship has been disproven - detailed explanations are included in the volume's Foreword (Ger). The Foreword also discusses the individual instrumental works attributed to Gluck by various encyclopedias. In addition to the detailed Foreword, the volume includes facsimiles of representative source excerpts. The Critical Commentary (Ger) analyzes the state of sources and includes extensive information on editorial principles and performance practice./ Répertoire / Orchestre

...some moments for Ludwig van...-Sweet echoes of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata in the introduction bring a gentle slumber. Breathing is calm and sleep holds the promise of rest and relaxation. With the onset of the REM sleep phase however in which most dreams take place and where the day’s events are worked through we hear other sounds played. With distorted sounds reminiscent of an old gramophone the music pulls the listener inevitably ever deeper into the dreamscape in a very realistic dangerous situation that comes to a dramatic head. It triggers a desperate struggle between theimpulse to awaken and the exhausting urge to flee. For a short moment it seems as if the wakeful urge has won out before dream’s powerful spell is again cast and there’s no escape…

Concerto for String Orchestra - the magnum opus of Grayna Bacewicz (1909-1969) ...
(+)
Concerto for String Orchestra - the magnum opus of Grayna Bacewicz (1909-1969) the outstanding composer and violinist - was composed in 1948 and at once became one of the most frequently performed works of this Polish artist. This masterpieceof neoclassicism fascinates as much by its invention and virtuosic briliance as its harmonious combination of formal elements of a traditional nature with new tonal ideas. The form of the three-movement Concerto oscillates between that of the baroqueconcerto grosso and the early classical sonata cycle. The neoclassical tendency is evident above all in the articulation of the musical structure in keeping with the rigours of periodicity and the manner of developing thematic threads derived fromthem while the concertato character of particular movements and the generally linear texture indicate baroque connections. The first movement (Allegro) - in the form of an early classical sonata allegro - begins with a subject with energeticfigurations emblematic for the whole piece and based on a constant pendulum-like semiquaver movement anchored securely on D. It is precisely because of the nature of this subject that Bacewiczs work has been compared to the Brandenburg Concertosby Jan Sebastian Bach The second movement (Andante) while retaining its concertato charakter is at the same time an example of the composers ability to create emotionally serene lyrical moods and her sense of cantilena derived from the spiritof romantic song (a motto-subject presented at the beginning by cello solo). In this movement it is both the process of evolution and the instrumental colouring which constitute the constructional agents forming here a self-containedvalue. In thethird movement (Vivo) the composer returns to her favourite type of music understood as an expression of pure motion in the form of figural motives with infinite transformational possibilities. The spontaneity of the music the constant mutabilityof the tonal situations and the sophisticated acerbic harmonies - as Witold Lutosawski described them - form a colourful mosaic built in the structural skeleton of a sonata rondo. Concerto for String Orchestra is not only proof of thestylizing tendency of the composer but also of an unerring intuition concerning the technical and expressive possibilities inherent in a string instruments ensemble. (+)
New York is the city which fascinates and inspires Ruders. Time and again he goes back there to work. 'Manhattan Abstraction' (1982) subtitles - a symphonic skyline for large orchestra - was conceived there. Ruders’ Brittish colleague Oliver Knussen defines the piece as: - a performance of an extraordinary Morden-Times-like construction. It is a sort of symphonic sculpture which in the composer’s own words words propels forth from one particular inspiration: the New York profile as seen from Liberty Island one icy cold January day with it’s open clear sky and dazzling sun light. 'Manhatten Abstraction' appears as an amalgam of some of the compositorical habits foundin present pieces. For instance are present here compositorical ideas and melodic loans from 'Capriccio Pian’e Forte' 2nd String Quartet(1979) 'Four Compositions' (1980) and 2nd Piano Sonata(1982). The question at hand is mainly concerned with the enhanced elaboration of Ruders’ use of the classic English change-ringing system: a permuting method pre-determining the order of tone-appearances and /or tone groups; a serial technique in other words. In spite of the rigidly fixed material Ruders somehow manages to chisel out a personal expression by way of emphasising contrasting elements already existing within the material itself. The spiky repetitive sections form a counterpart to a more human violin-solo. This dialectical tension is - as hinted by the title - a symphonic abstraction of a fascinating metropolis; the most beautiful and the ugliest. The subtitle: a symphonic skyline reflects the musical erection of the Manhattan profile which under the clear sky materializes into the most powerful and compelling man-made sculpture on earth. Thus 'Manhattan Abstraction' is a homage to as well as a vision of this giant contraption of concrete glass and chrome.

Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Seventeen single-movement instrumental works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart are referred to as 'church sonatas' or 'epistle sonatas'. Some are simple trios for two violins and bass, others more lavish concertante pieces with obbligato organ. Only Leopold Mozart took up the epistle sonata in isolated pieces that have survived in fragmentary form. Mozart's sonatas thus form a musically significant repertoire without parallels elsewhere./ Répertoire / Instruments à Cordes et Orgue

(+)
Romance in F major for Violoncello and Orchestra-Just a few months after completing his Cello Sonata op. 6 Strauss composed another work for this instrument: a Romance for cello and orchestra which remained unpublished during his lifetime. According to the autograph manuscript the composition was finished on June 27 1883 and Strauss also prepared the piano reduction himself. The Romance is regarded as one of Strauss??? most mature youthful works though it was long overshadowed by the cello sonata despite several quite successful performances given by the then-famous principal cellist of the Munich Court Orchestra Hanu? Wihan. Only since the posthumous first edition of 1986 has the music world been rediscoveringthis striking work which now also appears in a Henle Urtext edition.

The composer writes:Pilgrim was inspired it will be no surprise to learn by reading Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress - Vaughan Williams's great opera on the subject had fascinated me from its first performance yet it was a long time before I caught up with this essential item in any well-stocked library of English classics. It made a great impression not least because of its theme of a journey of self-discovery and a rediscovery or renewal of faith. These are ideas which have a strong interest for me not in religious terms but in their application to every aspect of human life (including great journeys) and this piece reflects my response in musical terms to this concern. The tempo of the whole piece which lasts about 18 minutes is basically slow. There are two quick episodes but these act somewhat like the trio sections of a classical scherzo save that the tempo relationships are inverted (the classical trios would have been slower not quicker) and the canvas is much larger being that of a single substantial slow movement. The form of the whole is perhaps fantasia-like rather than having any relationship to classical forms such as sonata or rondo - some motifs and themes are varied as the work develops and the opening chords are of primary importance throughout the work. There has been no attempt to convey any pictorial elements deriving from Bunyan's great book. There is however one feature which upon completion of the score struck me with some force which is that almost all the thematic material is essentially striving upwards - there is a constant upward movement (sometimes over a lengthy period) throughout the work. Pilgrim was commissioned by the Luton Music Club for the Raphael Ensemble with funds provided by the Eastern Arts Board and Bedfordshire County Council and is dedicated to the Luton Music Club. The first performance was given in Luton on February 10th 1997 and followed as part of a joint scheme by performances in the same week at the Music Clubs of Bedford and Leighton Buzzard.

Britta Byström's Trumpet Concerto No.2 Screen Memories for Trumpet solo and Orchestra (2012). Trumpet solo part: WH31514B Dedicated to Tine Thing Helseth. Premiered February 28 2013 by the Nordic Chamber Orchestra and Tine Thing Helseth conducted by Johannes Gustavsson at Stadshuset in Sundsvall Sweden. Programme note Screen Memories is the English translation of a Freudian term (Deckerinnerung is the original German term). In Swedish it is called 'täckminnen'. The term means strong but seemingly meaningless childhoodmemories as 'cover' for substantial memory. The title is something of a pun as the work is based on the composition Voyage Into the Golden Screen (1968-69) by Danish composer Per Nørgård – a modern classic in which Nørgård presents his compositional technique known as the infinity series. The technique which I freely apply in the “Trumpet Concerto” enables the development of an endless melody! In that sense “Screen Memories” adapts a second understanding: memories of the composition of Nørgård. Nørgård in turn adopted the title from a song by British songwriter Donovan – the first phrase of this song is in my trumpet concerto. And then there's a third musical reference: the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 'Pathetique'. I once heard it in concert while a massive rainstorm appeared and nearly drowned the music. A musical memory incorporated in the composition (the percussionist uses a “rain stick”). Screen Memories thus becomes a concert full of musical memories dressed in new clothes. It is written for and dedicated to the soloist Tine Thing Helseth whose soft and virtuoso

Par HOLMAN PETER. Music for three violins and bass formed a small yet distinctive corpus of instrumental music at the Restoration court of Charles II and in the Catholic chapel of James II. Introduced to England by the German violinist Thomas Baltzar, the genre was adopted by John Jenkins, whose ten late fantasia-suites for three violins, bass viol and continuo, together with Gottfried Finger’s five sonatas for the same group of instruments, constitute the bulk of this volume. Other representative works include Baltzar’s own Suite in C major and Bartholomew Isaack’s Ground in A minor, all fascinating progenitors of Purcell’s crowning contributions to the repertoire, his Pavan in G minor and ‘Three Parts upon a Ground’. / Date parution : 1905-07-10/ Répertoire / 3 Violons, Bas Viol et Basse Continue

Composed in 1978 by Henri Dutilleux Timbres Espace Mouvement Ou La Nuit Etoileé is a work for Orchestra also named ?The Starry Night? after the painting by Van Gogh. It was commissioned by Mstislav Rostropovich for the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington and is dedicated to Charles Münch. This work for Orchestra lasts approximately 20 minutes and depicts the content of the painting. It is scored for a full Orchestra without Violins or Violas. The Cellos serve to represent space with swirling solos alongside calmer sections while the lack of Violins and Violas epitomises for the quiet andmotionless sections of the painting. The solo of the Wind instruments and Drums characterizes the clouds and the light of the moon and stars. It is divided into two parts: 1. Nébuleuse (Nebula) and 2.Constellations which are divided by a Cello interlude. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work winning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers among many others. His work also includes a Piano sonata two symphonies the Violin concerto 'L'Arbre Des Songes' (The Tree Of Dreams) and the Cello concerto 'Tout Un Monde Lointain' (A Whole Distant Word).
