This a cappella gem uses optional percussion accompaniment creating a Renaissance sound and madrigal effect. Beginning with a simple melody each part joins with its own melody. Soon the polyphonic singing is gloriously forte andbuilds to a strong ending. “How sweet the answer echo makes to music at night.” “Music's Echo” is a sweet musical work to use as a processional or it may be sung antiphonally by two or more choirs. Words byThomas Moore (1779-1852) from Irish Melodies Vol. 8. So many creative options! Optional percussion includes triangle finger cymbals tambourine drum.

The composer was drawn to the beautiful stillness and sadness of the poem by Christina Rossetti which transcends its rigid sonnet structure and allude via the epigraph to the mysterious Willow-Wood cycle by Christina's brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The music suggests a division of the poem into three stanzas alternating with tranquil interludes (using the opening melody) representing the 'willow-wood' of the title so that the listener is constantly reminded of the gentle surroundings. As the intensity of the text increases so does the astringency of dissonance in the verses reaching its apogee just before consonance breaks through at the crucial phrase 'onemoment joined'. The simplicity of the Vocal writing conveys the serenity of the setting while simultaneously suggesting the austere melancholy of the lovers. An Echo From Willow-Wood was the winner of the Stainer & Bell Award for Choral Composition 2015.

In Bright Mass With Canons the canonical motifs are present right from the beginning and carry through almost every bar of the work. There are echoes of early English Choral writing and abstracted sections with flurries of sound interspersed with more Choral writing all in the most modern idioms. Contemporary American composer Nico Muhly is a prolific writer and arranger who at 32 is the youngest composer ever to have been commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in New York. His oeuvre includes two operas and many solo pieces and works for small ensemble Orchestra and Chorus and he has collaborated with artists such as PhilipGlass Björk and Sigur Rós.In the December 2014 edition of Organists' Review Christopher Maxim writes that 'the vocal writing frequently evokes Renaissance polyphony' and 'the language is fresh and contemporary with much zest being added by the organ part.'

Reassures His Mother:
SATB: Vocal Score Choral SATB [Vocal Score] University Of York Music Press
Jesus Reassures His Mother is a setting of medieval lyric poetry written anonymo...(+)
Jesus Reassures His Mother is a setting of medieval lyric poetry written anonymously in the 14th century. The poet recounts a vision of the young Mary rocking the infant Christ to sleep. The child requests hismother to sing a lullaby but alas knowing her child’s fate she is too sad to sing. Jesus tells her that all mothers worry about their children’s futures and insists that she should sing nevertheless. Mary recounts the visit ofGabriel and the events of Christ’s birth but reflects how sad it is to have delivered a child to such a fate. Jesus reassures his mother that he will be with his father in heaven where Mary will come to join Him at the end oftime there to live in eternal bliss. At this point Mary is persuaded by and echoes her child’s reassuring words and she is joined in this by the choir (now representing us all). The vision fades away in the voice of the narratorwhose loneliness and longing return. We learn that it is Christmas Day. This setting grows from the visionary mystical world inhabited by Julian of Norwich whose Revelations of Divine Love provided the inspiration for awork Anne Boyd composed in 1994. The medium has been expanded from the Song Company’s six solo voices used in the Revelations to the double motet choir of the Sydney Philharmonia who commissioned this work for their 75thanniversary. The parts of the infant Jesus Mary the Narrator and the angel Gabriel are taken by choir soloists: soprano alto tenor and bass. The work is situated in the context of Boyd’s personal musical aestheticwhich she describes as the intersection of Christian Love with Buddhist silence.

There is no rose may be considered as having three distinct but musically interlinked phases. The first is reflective in nature a set of musings on the mysteries of Mary as the Mother of God the nature of God Creation and the Trinity; the music lends a sense of the rising expectation appropriate to the season of Advent. This increasing tension breaks out into the angelic chorus Gloria in excelsis Deo a brief glimpse of something other which is then echoed by the fading repetitions of Gaudeamus (we rejoice). Finally the poem moves on joining the procession towards Christmas; a new key the expanding range and Transeamus (we go/proceed/cross over) fading intothe distance serve to provide a musical metaphor for the journey. The Novello New Choral Series is an inspiring selection of new works from a range of contemporary composers offering pieces for all types of choirs including sacred and secular works from simple four-part settings to more expansive yet accessible repertoire in an exciting variety of styles. This collection is perfect for choirs looking to broaden their repertoire and explore some of the best new music around.Andrew Cusworth (b.1984) read music at Magdalene College Cambridge where he was also an Organ Scholar. Recent compositions include Factum est silentium for double choir and organ which won the first New Music for St Paul’s Cathedral Composition Competition and Give ear O ye heavens which was shortlisted for the King James Bible Trust Composition Awards. 'This is a piece whose effect greatly exceeds its simple means and it would be welcome in any serious carol service.' - Jeremy Summerly Choir & Organ

Bernard Hughes' Psalm 56 for unaccompanied SATB choir. This work was the winner of the Elysian Singers Composition Competition in celebration of the choir's 30th anniversary. It was premiered on 15 October 2016 at St. James's Church Piccadilly London by the Elysian Singers conducted by Sam Laughton. Duration: approx. 3 1/2 minutes. 'It opens with a lively but gritty Dorian melody that the composer then develops suitably reflecting the anger present in the Psalm text. However two unexpected things occur: first the composer sets the original Psalm inscription 'To the chief Musician...' in a kind of remotefaux-bourdon style and then he uses Latin for the final verse together with a slower and more lush choral style'. Choir & Organ December 2017. 'It will be a rare church choir that can negotiate the rhythmic vitality and tonal complexity of Bernard Hughes’s Psalm 56. Unaccompanied and with a text few composers have probably set before (‘mine enemies would daily swallow me up’) it includes the dedication ‘to the chief musician upon Jonath-elem-rechokim Michtam of David’ set to music. Nevertheless this could be most effective in performance'. Sunday By Sunday December 2017

Richard Allain's Night for SATB and Cello. Night Was commissioned by Commotio and recieved its premiere in Merton College Oxford in June 2007 conducted by Matthew Berry and is available on the Herald label (HAVP340). Composer's Note: Given the long phrase lengths of Night it is suggested that choirs Stagger breathing where necessary. The last page of the score requires some explanation. The singers should split into three separate groups: two equal SATB choirs and an SATB solo quartet. Each group sings their own music - each repetition being separated by a long pause - independent of the othergroups. Thus Choir I will begin and as they finish Choir II will commence etc. The music should continue for about two minutes getting gradually quieter with each repetition. Though a common pulse should be kept the groups begin each repetition as they wish: the music should overlap and blur. Against this the solo Cello plays its fragments of melody. The choirs at the conductor's discretion should end in the order they began leaving the cello to play its last notes as the echoes fade. Duration: 20 minutes

The Vocal score for John Tavener's beautiful work Lament For Jerusalem arranged for Soprano Countertenor and SATB Chorus with a Piano Accompaniment. This score can be used for both the 'Original'and 'Jerusalem' versions of the work. The composition was commissioned by Father Arthur E. Bridge OAM for Ars Musica Australis and was first written in 2002. The 'Jerusalem' version was arranged for theChoir of London in 2004. Tavener himself calls the work 'a mystical love-song' that reflects the 'mystical sacred and sublime nature of the texts'. Lament For Jerusalem isdivided into seven stanzas each of which contain Christic Judaic and Islamic inspirations making this work truly innovative and interesting. The piece is around 45 minutes long and it is recommended to be performed in a spacein which there are generous acoustics that will allow each individual voice as well as the collective whole to 'breathe' and dissolve into the air. The work is a wonderful one receiving greatcritical acclaim upon its premiere and impressing audiences the world over for its soaring Soprano melodies and its left-field Middle-Eastern harmonies. The composition is one in a long line of Tavener pieces thatimmediately silences audiences and captivates their attention throughout. Any performance of Lament For Jerusalem is guaranteed to be a special event and one that audiences willremember for a long time.

Marienhymne is a piece on a smaller scale than Tavener’s dramatic cantatas and is written for unaccompanied choir and semiChorus. Tavener was drawn to writer and philosopher Frithjof Schuon’s vision of the Virgin Mary asuniversal and primordial Woman and has used an extract from his work Maria as the libretto in German for this piece. The composer calls for ‘radiance and ecstasy’ and also a ‘great distance’ between the main choir and the echochoir.John Tavener was that rare creature a composer of serious music and serious religious music who also achieved commercial success. He burst into the popular consciousness with the performance of his Song for Athene at thefuneral of Princess Diana but had been a highly respected and frequently-performed composer since the premiere of his dramatic cantata The Whale in 1968.

SATB-One of Berlioz's greatest works the Grand Messe des Morts is written for Tenor Solo SSTTBB Chorus and Orchestra. The scale of this work should not be underestimated: it runs at an hour and a quarter and the orginal scoring included no fewer than 16 timpani and four extra brass choirs! However not all of its music is massive (the extra forces explode onto the scene in the Tuba mirum portion of the Dies irae sequence in No. 2 and then disappear). Indeed much of it is quite intimate -- for example the slender No. 3 Quid sum miser which immediately follows the outburst in No. 2 or the opening of No. 9 Sanctus which features the solo tenor. Andthe Requiem ends in absolute tenderness the Lamb of God (No. 10 Agnus Dei) having taken away the sins of the world and accepted the dead into a new world of which we mortals can hear only vague echoes -- timpani strokes left over from the explosive Last Judgment held earlier in the mass now distant and gentle. This the Schirmer Edition of the vocal score contains a piano accompaniment arranged by Leopold Damrosch.

'Still Falls the Rain' is perhaps Edith Sitwell’s greatest poem. Maconchy set the poem for double choir unaccompanied with some antiphonal writing. The recurrence of the phrase ‘still falls the rain’ throughout the poem isechoed in the music and helps to give shape and coherence to it. After the impassioned and tragic character of the main part of the poem it ends on a calmer even hopeful note (the Dawn after the Night raids perhaps). It wascommissioned by the Chelmsford Festival and first performed there on 22 May 1985 by the BBC singers conducted by John Poole in Chelmsford Cathedral.
