Roope Mäenpää's Sonata for flute and piano (2020) was composed on a small island Utö in the Archipelago Sea (in the Baltic Sea). Isolated from his normal environment the composer didn't find so much peace or harmony as insecurity and introversion. These sensations of otherness, together with an intensive creative project, left a diary-like mark on the sonata. It is commissioned by and dedicated to Sami Junnonen and Tuomas Turriago.Roope Mäenpää (b. 1990) is a Finnish composer and musician based in Tampere. Mäenpää’s oeuvre includes orchestral and chamber music, and his works have been performed by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Tampere Philharmonic and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra. He has also worked in close collaboration with the TamperRaw contemporary music ensemble. Mäenpää has composed two musical fairytales for narrator and orchestra: Hipinäaasi apinahiisi (2019-20) and the Insect Symphony (2021), which he conducted in 2022 at the concert by the Tampere Philharmonic. The symphony is a valuable addition to children’s culture and an exciting work which sets out to explore nature through the miraculous world of little organisms.

The cycle of suites for flute and basso continuo, Op. 5 is J.-M. Hotteterre's second important set of works in this genre. The first published as Op. 2 has a special significance in the history of music and for performing practice. The composer added namely to the second edition of the work sufficient information concerning ornamentation and performance. (For the modern critical edition of Op. 2 see volume Z. 13901 of the Urtext Series of EMB.) Hotteterre's Op. 5 published in the present edition is an organic continuation of Op. 2. This fact was also emphasized by the composer himself who entitled them ''Premier Livre'' and ''Deuxiéme Livre' on publication. The ornamentsand directions for performance occur here just as copiously as in the revised edition of ''Premier Livre''. Op. 5, ein Zyklus für Flöte und Basso continuo von J.-M. Hotteterre ist die zweite bedeutende Reihe des Komponisten in dieser Gattung. Die erste, die als Op. 2 erschien, erfreut sich besonderer musikgeschichtlichen und aufführungstechnischen Wichtigkeit, da der Komponist ihre zweite Ausgabe mit zahlreichen Anmerkungen zur Verzierung und Vortragsweise ergänzte. (Die kritische Ausgabe von Op. 2 ist im Band Z. 13901 der Urtextausgabe von EMB enthalten.) Der hier veröffentlichte Zyklus Op. 5 ist eine organische Fortsetzung von Op. 2. Diese Tatsache wurde selbst vom Komponisten betont, indem er die Bände als Premier Livre und Deuxieme Livre veröffentlichte. DieVerzierungen und Vortragsanweisungen sind im Op. 5 genauso zahlreich, wie in der neu bearbeiteten Ausgabe von Premier Livre.

POEM for Flute and PianoKozuch’s POEM is a plaintive elegy, perfect for memorial concerts, in religious services, or as a lyric interlude in recital. Although composed with piano accompaniment, the music is also very effective in performance with organ. Thaddeus Kozuch (1913-1991) was a Chicago-based pianist, composer, and professor at DePaul University and Northwestern University. His beautiful POEM was composed originally for violin and piano in 1937 for his wife-to-be, Jacqueline Frye. He revised POEM for flute and piano in 1988 but the work was discovered only recently in a piano bench by the composer’s daughter, flutist Ann Fairbanks.Although the final pencil manuscript is musically complete, it lacks dynamics, and this publication presents the music as the composer left it.The following performance suggestions are provided by Ann Fairbanks:Many nuances of the work may be left to the discretion of the performer. There are quite a few notes that may be slurred, such as sets of eighth notes or triplet-eighths; if notes are articulated as written, the tonguing should be legato.Dynamics for both flute and piano could be as follows: begin the work p, then crescendo to f in bars 6-7. Decrescendo in 10-11 to a p in bar 12. The most intense section (bars 16-32) should be played with energy and full sonority, including a crescendo in 26 to fin 27. The conclusion, beginning at bar 42, should be played p, with the last measures performed quietly.
