Reflecting the energy and drive of the furious winds of November on Lake Michigan, this original work will resonate with anyone ever caught in a storm. The strong Dutch heritage of West Michigan bestows the name Meer Winden, lake winds in Dutch, and provides a story to the technical and musical elements of the piece. All sections play the melody and the driving accompaniments. Violins and violas use third position; violas and cellos use fourth position. Meer Winden, by Bob Phillips, provides ample opportunity for working on tone within the ensemble.

Gerard Schurmann (b. 1924) is a Dutch contemporary composer, who was born in the Dutch East Indies and lived in England from childhood, before setting in the USA in 1981. His orchestral works span 5 decades, and he remains in demand for commissions today.
The single-movement Cello Concerto The Gardens of Exile was first performed by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in March 1991. It received immediate critical acclaim, with one reviewer calling it an extraordinarily fine and imaginative composition. It features a tense orchestral build up before the Cello enters, gradually emerging from the texture and taking control of the music. Asignificant contribution to the repertoire, this study score is published by Novello.

Cape Horn is situated at the southern point of South America, on the Chilean island “Isla Hornosâ€. For centuries, sailing around thehorn was said to be one of he most dangerous passages for ships that wanted to sail from the Atlantic Ocean westwards to the PacificOcean. Tradition has it that Sir Francis Drake discovered Cape Horn in 1578 and the Dutch voyager Willem Cornelisz Schouten was the first to round it in 1616. It was the latter who named the promontory after his Dutch hometown Hoorn. It is estimated that over 800 ships and 10,000 men in total sank into the icy waters during attempts to circumnavigate the cape. The work Cape Horn – a solo for Horn and concert band – attempts to reflect the beauty, but also the peril of this region. It is a matter of great importance to thecomposer Otto M. Schwarz to write new repertoire in the wind band solo works genre. The tonal language of his main genre – film music – is as unmistakable as the experimental parts and catchy tunes.
