Isaac Watts (1674-1748) wrote the lyrics of There is a land of pure delight and is known as the Father of English Hymnody.
Watts was for the English hymn as Ambrose was for the medieval Latin hymn and what Martin Luther was for the German chorale.
He wrote about 750 songs, and some of them survide the ravahes of time. (Joy To The World, When I survey the wondrous cross, I sing the Mighty Power of God)

The title is a popular saying in England. It means that's where the money is. Where there's muck, there's power is such a popular expression in the United Kingdom. The saying inspired Peter Martin to compose a highly attractive piece in four parts, consisting of contemporary dances that can also be performed separately. Let's dance!

De titel is een populair gezegde in Engeland. Het betekent vrij vertaald - waar het geld zit. 'Where there's muck there is power' is zo'n gevleugelde uitspraak uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Het gezegde inspireerde Peter Martin tothet schrijven van een bijzonder aardig 5-delig werk met moderne dansen welke ook gescheiden van elkaar gespeeld kunnen worden. Let's dance! 1. Easy does it - Steady Rock Een aanstekelijk stukje in rock-stijl. De rockmuziek bestaatvanaf begin 60-er jaren en sindsdien is de stijl populair gebleven maar er is geen genre waar zoveel bands de grond in- en uitgestampt worden. Maar het blijft leuk. 2. Best Foot Forward - mars positief De grootste doemdenkers wordenvrolijk bij het aanhoren van een vrolijke mars. De oorsprong van de mars is niet te achterhalen maar de stijl blijft populair en actueel. Best Foot Forward is een op Amerikaanse leest geschoeide mars. 3. Swing Bin - De swingstijldie eind 20-er jaren in de VS losbarstte was een uitvloeisel van de crisisjaren. Aangevoerd door Benny Goodman en de Dorsey Brothers (Tommy en Jimmy) werd deze vorm een rage die grote invloed bleef houden op de ontwikkeling vande jazzmuziek. Stilzitten is er niet bij want de muziek nodigt uit tot het losmaken van al die luie spieren en waar kan dat het beste? In de concertzaal maar het liefst op de dansvloer. 4. The Supreme Skedaddle - alla US March Eenuitsmijter vormt de Supreme Skedaddle, een mars in US-stijl. Het woord skedaddle is een interessant item voor etymologen maar de componist kent het woord uit zijn Noord-Engelse geboortegrond. Het betekent daar 'verspilling vaniets'. Maar de feestelijke mars is beslist geen verspilling van papier of energie.

The piece reflects the composer's fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory, formulated by Pythagoras, that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. (‘Harmonia’ in Ancient Greek, which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the six known planets from the sun and that the planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which, unfortunately, we humans cannot hear). In this work, these six notesform the basis of the sections MUSIC OF THE SPHERES and HARMONIA. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang when time and space were created, and this is followed by a depiction of the BIG BANG itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called THE LONELY PLANET which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life, and the constant search for other civilisations elsewhere in the universe. ASTEROIDS AND SHOOTING STARS depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet, and the piece ends with THE UNKNOWN, leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction.

The Lonely Planet (Il pianeta solitario) è una meditazione sulle circostanze che hanno portato alla creazione della terra. Asteroids and Shooting Stars (Asteroidi e Stelle cadenti) descrive i molteplici oggetti che si muovono nello spazio e che rappresentano unrischio per il nostro pianeta. The word ‘tsunami’ is of Japanese origin. When you look it up in a dictionary, you will find that it means ‘a great sea wave produced by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruption’.
A megatsunami is the superlative of this awesome expressionof power that nature can create, and has catastrophic consequences.

When Carl Wittrock completed this composition not many such big earth movements had occurred, but since then we have become all too familiar with the disastrousconsequences which a tsunami may have.
On the 26th of December 2004 a heavy seaquake took place near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Tidal waves 10 meters in height ravaged the coastal regions of many countries for miles around. The tsunamitook the lives of thousands of people and destroyed many villages and towns.

There are more areas which run the risk of being struck by a tsunami, such as the island of La Palma, one of the Canary Islands. This island is based on oceaniccrust at a fracture zone and as such is one of nature’s time bombs. The consequences of a natural calamity like a megatsunami are immense.
In the case of La Palma, the tidal wave will move in the direction of South America, where it may reach 50km inland, destroying everything on its way.

In his composition Wittrock describes an ordinary day which will have an unexpected ending.
Right from the beginning there seems to be something in the air, the music creating an oppressiveatmosphere of impending disaster.
Themes are interrupted, broken off suddenly, followed by silence, suggesting the calm before the storm.
Suddenly a short climax (glissandi in the trombone part) indicates the seaquake, and the megatsunami isa fact. Hereafter follows a turbulent passage symbolising the huge rolling waves.
After nature’s force has spent itself, resignation sets in and the composition ends with a majestic ode to nature.

Het woord tsunami is afkomstig uit het Japans. Het woordenboek geeft als betekenis: een vloedgolf als gevolg van een onderzeese aardbeving. Een megatsunami is de overtreffende trap van deze vorm van natuurgeweld en heeft catastrofale gevolgen.

Toen Carl Wittrock deze compositie voltooide waren er nog niet veel voorbeelden van dergelijke grote bevingen, maar inmiddels weten we maar al te goed welke desastreuze gevolgen een tsunami kan veroorzaken.
Op 26 december 2004 vond ereen zware beving plaats in de zee nabij het Indonesische eiland Sumatra. Vloedgolven van wel 10 meter hoog teisterden de kuststreken van menig land in de verre omtrek. De tsunami eiste duizenden mensenlevens en verwoestte vele dorpen ensteden.

Er zijn meer gebieden waar sprake is van een directe dreiging, zoals op het eiland La Palma, één van de Canarische eilanden. Dit eiland ligt op een breukvlak en is daarmee een tijdbom van de natuur. Bij een calamiteit als eenmegatsunami zijn de gevolgen niet te overzien.
In het geval van La Palma begeeft de vloedgolf van enkele honderden meters zich richting Zuid Amerika met alle gevolgen van dien. Tot ongeveer 50 kilometer landinwaarts heeft de megatsunami eenallesverwoestende werking.

In de compositie schetst Wittrock een gewone dag die ongewoon zal aflopen. Al vanaf het begin hangt er iets in de lucht en is er sprake van een dreigende, beklemmende sfeer.
Themas worden onderbroken doorplotselinge afbrekingen en stiltes. Opeens is daar de korte climax (glissandi in trombones) die de beving symboliseert en de megatsunami is een feit.
Een onrustig gedeelte vangt aan, daarmee de rollende, voortstuwende golven symboliserend. Na hetnatuurgeweld is er berusting en The Power of the Megatsunami wordt afgesloten met een majestueuze ode aan de natuur.

Polish Christmas Lights is a collection of three traditional Polish Christmas carols arranged for brass ensemble with flexible instrumentation. Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrastingtraditional tunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.

De wortels van de klezmerstijl liggen in wereldlijke melodieën, populaire dansen, het joodse ‘hazanut’ (cantorijmuziek) en de ‘nigunim’, de melodieën die worden gereciteerd door de ‘hasidim’ (orthodoxe joden). De term werd in de loopder tijden synoniem aan instrumentale muziek, waarin met name de viool en klarinet de hoofdrol spelen. Voor A Klezmer Karnival zijn drie traditionele melodieën gebruikt: Choson kale mazel tov, een bruiloftsdans,Freylekh, een joodse kringdans, en Sherele, een Duitse herdersdans.

Philip Sparke verarbeitete in seinem neuen Werk drei unterschiedliche traditionelle Klezmermelodien: einen Hochzeitstanz mit Glückwünschen für Braut und Bräutigam, einen Rundtanz und einen so genannten Scherentanz. Daraus entstand A Klezmer Karnival, das die dem Klezmer eigene Mischung aus Fröhlichkeit und Melancholie ausgezeichnet wiedergibt. Ein ebenso abwechslungsreiches wie stimmungsvolles Konzertwerk, mit dem Ihre Brass Band überzeugen wird!

The composition Kefas was written for the brass band 'Apollo' from Grou (The Netherlands), by order of the Unisono Foundation, the organisation for wind music in The Netherlands.
The assignment was given on account of earning the Champions Title during the Dutch Brass Band Championships in the year 2001 (4th division).

The theme of the composition links the tradition of the village Grou, not to celebrate Sint Nicolaas but Sint Pieter.By this typical Dutch festivity (in December) the holy Nicolaas gives presents to the children. It is a popular custom where young and old participate.
Grou is the only place where this is not done by Sint Nicolaas but by Sint Pieter.Apart from that, on the 22th of Februari, a lot of festivities that take place,resemble those of the Sinterklaas celebration.

In the composition two Sint Pieter songs are processed, set through bible scenes, wherein in among others the visit of Christ to the house of Peter's Mother-in-law and the calling of Peter are depicted.
The title refers to the pronouncement of Christ, where he named Peter the rock on which he shall build his church.
The Hebrew word for rock is Kephas.
Kefas was premiered in 2003.

The composition the Lonesome Knight was based on a fairytale. The piece was written by Saskia Apon for the National Brass Band Championships 2001.

Once upon a time there was a knight who went to fight and defeat the dragon that had beenkilling the people of his town.
There is a short but intense battle between the two and the knight is triumphant. However whilst persuing the dragon the knight has travelled far away from his home and now is lost. He roames around trying to findhis way home, but exhausted and weary he falls to the ground. He awakens startled by a Giant and a group of Goblins who are celebrating the death of the dragon.
The knight joins in the festivities but after a long evening is once more leftalone.
The sun rises the following morning and he sees a castle on the horizon. He enthousiastcally ventures towards the castle in the hope of meeting other people.
However he becomes greatly disillusioned when there is none to be found. Inhis desperation the knight climbs the tower ready to jump off.
Suddenly he hears a heavenly voice. Right before him is the most beautiful princess he has ever seen. She graciously thanks him for killing the dragon, a spark ingnites between themand they build a life together and.... live happily ever after!

Saskia Apon studied harp at Rotterdam School of music. With this instrument she rounded of her studies by passing with credit, however it was her love of composition thatremained her focus.
Self-taught, she began composing at the age of nine. Since then she has written pieces for The Dutch Brass Quintet, The Dutch Brass Ensemble, The Rotterdam Trombone Quartet and the brass band quintet Brass Ability.
Atpresent she is the in-house arranger for The Rotterdam Philarmonic Brass Ensemble.
Besides the customary attention for the real splashworks she endeavours to add value to the melodic function of the brass wind instruments in her music. Part 1: The Entrance & Parade [with animation]
The opening of the park is a fact. A day fullof fun and pleasure awaits! You and the other visitors will be confronted with all the rides, attractions and adventures the theme park has to offer. Which ride shall we do first?! There is so much to do and experience on this day in the park! Aparade of colorful floats and park figures is passing by.
Let the fun begin!

Part 2: The Haunted House [with animation]
The only ride in the park that is not related to fun, is the Haunted House. Here visitors will be challengedto visit a house full of ghosts, creepy figures and other ominous things. The clock strikes twelve, there is no turning back. Ghosts are whispering, yelling, screaming... Fortunately it is almost one oclock, so we can leave this creepy placequickly.

Part 3: The Swinging Galleon [with illustrations]
What a huge pirate ship! Each time you swing back and forth, you will feel that weird feeling in your stomach. When you are thrown completely into the top you will have afantastic view over the park, but you can not enjoy it for long. Before you know the ship swings back the other way.

Part 4: The Fairy Tale Ride [with illustrations]
After all those exciting and spectacular rides and attractions,it is time for a peaceful tour in The Fairy Tale Ride. Surrounded by a fairytale setting, you will discover fable figures, talking animals and colorful designs. Such a beauty and tranquility. Having had this experience, we are ready again for thebig rides in the park!

Part 5: The Bumper Cars [with illustrations]
Now its time to crawl behind the wheel of the Bumper Cars! Shall we all chase the conductor?! Before you know you are hit by another visitor or you will bumpagainst someone else. In this tough ride you can prove yourself as a real driver, or perhaps as a really bad one.

Part 6: The Roller Coaster [with illustrations]
The largest, fastest and scariest ride in the park ... we shoulddefinitely do the Roller Coaster! All together in the train, the over-the-shoulder restraints are lowering... be ready to ride. The train leaves the station and is heading for the big lift hill. It will be very scary when the train reaches the topand the train will be plunged down the first drop! Loops, corkscrews and other spectacular coaster elements will follow... Before you know it, the ride of your life is over. Shall we ride it again?!

Part 7: Leaving the Park [withanimation]
Unfortunately everything comes to an end. This day in the theme park is over, but we have a lot new experiences to talk about! The memories of all the funny and spectacular rides will come up when we walk through the park to theexit. Just one look over the shoulder, the amusement park figures are waving at us. Hopefully we will come back again soon!



In 'Theme Park Fun!' bezoek je met de hele muziekvereniging een pretpark. Tijdens het bezoek word je op muzikale wijze geconfronteerd met een aantal spectaculaire attracties die het pretpark rijk is. Deel 1: 'The Entrance & Parade' [met animatiefilm]
De opening vanhet pretpark is een feit. De dag vol plezier kan beginnen en de bezoekers worden hier geconfronteerd met alle attracties en avonturen die ze in het pretpark staan te wachten. In welke attractie zullen we als eerst stappen?! Eris zoveel te doen en te beleven deze dag in het pretpark! Een parade met parkfiguren en kleurrijke praalwagens komt voorbij, de pret kan beginnen!

Deel 2: 'The Haunted House' [met animatiefilm]
De enige attractiein het pretpark die geen 'pret' uitstraalt, is het spookhuis. Hier worden de bezoekers uitgedaagd om zich te begeven in een huis vol spoken, geesten en andere onheilspellende dingen. De klok slaat 12 keer, er is geen weg meer terug.Gefluister..., geschreeuw... Gelukkig slaat de klok bijna 1 uur en kunnen we deze ongure plek snel verlaten.

Deel 3: 'The Swinging Galleon' [met illustraties]
Wat een groot piratenschip! Elke keer wanneer je heenen weer schommelt, voel je dat rare gevoel in je buik. Wanneer je helemaal in de top geslingerd bent heb je een fantastisch uitzicht over het pretpark, maar je kunt er niet lang van genieten. Voor je het weet zwaait het schip weerde andere kant op.

Deel 4: 'The Fairy Tale Ride' [met illustraties]
Na al die spannende en spectaculaire attracties is het tijd voor een rustig ritje in 'The Fairy Tale Ride'. Omgeven door een sprookjesachtige.

As he did before in the often played and commonly appreciated ‘Lord Tullamore’, in which he poetically depicted the landscape and the cultural elements of a small Irish village, in his composition ‘The Road to the West’ Carl Wittrock has sketched pioneer existence in America in a cinematic manner.
In ‘The Road to the West’ the composer has tried to capture images of pioneer life during the period dating from 1850 to 1890, the days of the so-called Wild West.
In those days, the Wild West used to be the territory west of civilization, the domain of cowboys, trappers, and other fortune hunters.
In short, ample ingredients for a captivating story.

In the firstscene a lonely adventurer struggles against nature and the elements.
After an exciting adventure he passes through ‘the Plains’, where majestic views alternated by colossal mountain ranges display an almost unimaginable beauty.
After weeks of isolation civilization is reached again.
‘The Saloon’ is the perfect meeting place here news is exchanged and hilarious scenes regularly take place.

In navolging van het veel gespeelde en alom gewaardeerde ‘Lord Tullamore’, waarin Carl Wittrock op poëtische wijze landschap en culturele elementen van een Iers dorpje verklankt, wordt in ‘The Road to the West’ op filmische wijzehet pioniersbestaan in Amerika geschetst.
De componist betreedt in ‘The Road to the West’ het pionierspad in de periode tussen 1850 en 1890, de tijd van het Wilde Westen.
Het Wilde Westen was het gebied ten westen van de beschaving,het domein van cowboys, pelsjagers en andere gelukzoekers.
Genoeg ingrediënten voor een boeiend verhaal.

In de eerste scene gaat een avonturier, eenzaam en alleen, de strijd aan met de natuur en de elementen.
Na een spannend avontuur trekt hij door ‘the Plains’, waar de weidse vergezichten, afgewisseld door kolossale bergformaties een bijna niet onder woorden te brengen schoonheid tentoonspreiden.
Na weken van eenzaamheid komttenslotte de bewoonde wereld weer in beeld.
‘The Saloon’ is de ontmoetingsplek bij uitstek. Hier worden ervaringen uitgewisseld en spelen zich vaak hilarische taferelen af.

Whereas ‘Auld Lang Syne’ may be considered the best-known Scottish song ever, yet at the same time it is an obscure one, for there are but few people who know the complete text by heart.
After the familiar ‘Should auld acquaintance be forgot .....‘ many people take their refuge to lyrics like ‘rum tee dum ta dee ..... lah, lah, lah ........... for auld lang syne’.
Even in Scotland only a handful of persons know the entire text and are able to give a correct rendering of it.
The current lyrics have been attributed to the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Burns, however, he did not write the whole poem : after he had heard an old man sing the centuries-old Scotchballad, he wrote it down and added a number of stanzas (1788).
Historical research teaches us that the ballad served many purposes, both political and religious.
Nowadays, ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is sung as a Christmas Carol and it is also sung on New Year’s Eve at the turning of the year. Apart from that, though, the song is also sung on many other occasions sometimes with different lyrics, which usually have Love, Friendship and/or Parting as their themes, as these go well with the fascinating melody.

In this arrangement a low-sounding solo instrument is central. The harmonization in the accompaniment fits in perfectly with the sentiments this song will evoke.

Misschien wel het meest bekende Schotse lied, maar tegelijkertijd ook het minst bekende, er zijn er maar weinig mensen die de tekst mee kunnen zingen.
Na het bekende ‘Should auld acquaintaintance be forgot and .....‘ vervallenvelen in ‘rum tee dum ta dee ..... lah, lah, lah ........... for auld lang syne’.
Zelfs in Schotland is maar een enkeling in staat de tekst correct weer te geven.
De huidige versie wordt toegeschreven aan de Schotse dichterRobert Burns. Burns heeft echter niet de hele tekst gemaakt.
Toen hij de eeuwen oude Schotse ballade door een oude man hoorde zingen, heeft hij enkele verzen toegevoegd (1788).
Historisch onderzoek leert dat de ballade voorveel doeleinden gebruikt werd, voor politieke als ook religieuze doelen.

In dit arrangement staat een ‘laag’ solo-instrumentcentraal.
De harmonisatie in de begeleiding sluit naadloos aan bij deze gevoelens die dit lied oproepen.
