Diese Klavierlieder entstanden in einer für Paul Hindemith bewegten und existenziell bedrohten Zeit. Während der Komponist in der Weimarer Republik noch im Zentrum des deutschen Musiklebens stand, galt er während der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur als ?entarteter Künstler'. Ab 1936 bestand für seine Werke ein generelles Aufführungsverbot. Da er keine Arbeit als Musiker oder Dozent fand, floh er 1938 zunächst in die Schweiz, zwei Jahre später in die USA.In dieser Zeit entstand eine Reihe von Klavierliedern zu Texten von Matthias Claudius, Friedrich Rückert, Novalis, Clemens Brentano, Friedrich Nietzsche und weiteren Dichtern. Mit nur einer Ausnahme blieben diese Werke zu Hindemiths Lebzeiten ungedruckt. The Complete Verlaine Settings (1887–1894) Critical edition-Gabriel Fauré’s seventeen settings of the poetry of Paul Verlaine mark the biggest single stylistic leap of his compositional career and arguably one of the high points of the entire art song repertoire. The present edition contains the three individual settings Claire de lune Spleen and Prison together with the Op. 58 “Venetian” Songs and the magnificient cycle La Bonne Chanson. With its focus both practical and scholarly this new Complete Edition of songs aims to encourage creative confident and well informed performance.
