Par SCHWARZ OTTO M.. Last Call est la deuxième commande qu’Otto Schwarz a reçue du Brass Band de Haute-Autriche et de son manager, Thomas Beiganz. Placés sous la direction d’Hannes Buchegger, les musiciens souhaitaient disposer d’un morceau final qui leur permettait de briller une dernière fois devant leur public. Partant du constat que le répertoire pour Brass Band contenait un nombre relativement limité de pièces de style pop-funk, Otto M.Schwarz leur a composé Last Call (“Dernier appel”), une œuvre pop-funk qui débute avec une fanfare impressionnante suivie immédiatement du premier chorus. Ce dernier introduit une mélodie entraînante qui subit plusieurs transformations à travers le développement de l’œuvre tout en étant soutenue par un rythme funk. Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. In the course of the two centuries following the death of Henry Purcell in 1695, no British composer of any statue was apparent. Consequently, the break-through of Edward Elgar (1857-1934) as an internationally known and respected composer at the end of the last century, was of considerable importance. As a composer Elgar was largely self-taught and he looked towards the continent for his inspiration. He is without doubt on par with his contemporaries such as the somewhat younger Richard Strauss. The Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost is a genuine admirer of Elgar’s music and on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the composer’s death in 1984 he composed the “CeremonialMarch”. Van der Roost was inspired by the most famous and frequently played works from Elgar’s catalogue of works, the characteristic “Pomp and Circumstances” marches, and decided to add his own, sixth march to the existing collection. / Niveau : 5 / Marche / Répertoire / Fanfare

Praise to Thee, Jesus Christ. Gelobet seist du Jesu Christ (We Praise You Jesus Christ) is an old Christmas hymn dating from the 16th century, which can still be found in many hymnbooks today. John Blanken has created a varied and imaginative arrangement on four verses of the hymn. After the introduction, derived from the opening notes, the hymn is first accompanied by an agile harmonisation. Next, we hear the chorale in a four-part setting with a percussion accompaniment. Then follows a short prologue to the third verse and finally its time for fireworks as the arrangement takes a stylistic leap in time with the festive prelude to the fourth and last verse. / Niveau : 3 / Hymnes et chorals / Recueil / Fanfare

Par SPARKE PHILIP. Avec Pomp and Circumstance, un cycle de cinq marches militaires, Edward Elgar a donné à la marche une véritable dimension symphonique. La Marche n° 1 est incontestablement la plus célèbre des cinq. De la mélodie du trio, Elgar devait déclarer qu’elle était de celles dont on n’a l’inspiration « qu’une fois dans sa vie ». Il réutilisera cette mélodie dans son oeuvre chorale Coronation Ode (1902) pour accompagner le texte Land of Hope and Glory d’A. C. Benson. The hot Spanish temperament can be heard from the opening themes in the minor key, as is usual in a paso doble, to the last bars of the trio. Arr. Philip Sparke. Par RYAN PAUL. Paul and Barry Ryan were identical twin sons of 1950’s pop singer Marion Ryan and were born on 24th October 1948. They were groomed for stardom and had started singing as a duo before their fifteenth birthday. They were signed by Decca in 1965 and brilliantly marketed as clean-cut fashion icons. Their first single ‘Don’t Bring Me Your Heartaches’ reached the UK top twenty but their success as twin performers lasted only three years. In 1968 Barry embarked on a solo career while Paul concentrated on writing and producing.
