Gluck Complete Edition V/2. Par GLUCK CHRISTOPH WILLIBALD. While Christoph Willibald Gluck dedicated his artistic life almost entirely to the composition of works for the opera stage, he also produced a number of instrumental works which have been somewhat marginalized until recently. This volume of the 'Gluck Complete Edition” (GGA) is the first to present 17 symphonies attributed to Gluck in a historical-critical edition - furthermore, the volume includes a new version of one of the trio sonatas published in 1961 as part of the GGA. Current research indicates that no reliable information about the genesis of the respective works exists for any of the symphonies attributed to Gluck. This is due to a lack of both autograph sources and reliable data pertaining to the history and first performances of these works. It is assumed that some of the existing symphonies might in fact be the lost overtures of Gluck's earlier operas. Others were possibly written to be performed in private or public concerts. The greatest challenge for the editors of this volume was posed by the question of authenticity and authorship of the works presented here. As no autographs exist for any of the symphonies bearing Gluck's name, the only indicators of authorship are attributions in the copies of score and parts, either original or added at a later time. The reliability of these attributions for individual works largely depends on the respective state of source material, meaning available sources as well as the condition of the respective copy. A thorough authenticity analysis concluded Gluck's authorship as valid in the case of 13 symphonies, while in the case of four other symphonies, diverging attributions lead to the acceptance of open authorship. As a result, this volume includes all compositions for which, according to the most current research, Gluck's authorship has not been refuted. In the case of two symphonies, one concerto for flute, and six trio sonatas published in 1961 as part of the GGA, Gluck's authorship has been disproven - detailed explanations are included in the volume's Foreword (Ger). The Foreword also discusses the individual instrumental works attributed to Gluck by various encyclopedias. In addition to the detailed Foreword, the volume includes facsimiles of representative source excerpts. Much of his life was spent in Bayreuth working for the court of Wilhelmine of Prussia Margravine of Bayreuth teaching her composition and violin. During his lifetime he composed a variety of orchestra and chamber music including this Concerto in B-flat Major in three movements: Allegro ma non troppo Andante and Allegretto. This edition includes the full orchestral score orchestral parts as well as guitar and lute parts. Victor Van Puijenbroeck has adapted the original solo part and included in the set areparts for both lute (the part has been adapted from lute tablature to modern notation) and guitar (capotasto). Fanfarer-Danmarks Radio for Orchestra BVN 351 was composed by Rued Langgaard in 1948. Instrumentation: 3.2.2.2/4.3.3.1/timp/2 perc/org/str. Parts are available on hire: hire@ewh.dk This extremely short orchestral piece was composed 7 May1948 in Ribe. Exactly between 5:45 and 6:45 in the morning(“normal time”). Rued Langgaard indicates the time of dayin both the sketch for the composition and the fair copy of thescore. Fair-copying of the score took place on 10 May 4:30 to6:00 in the morning (“summertime”) after it should be noted Langgaard had taken his obligatory morning constitutional inRibe (he suffered from insomnia and arose in the early morninghours). After the work’s final measure Langgaard wrote:“Short razor-sharp line of thought in music excluding allextraneous ‘developmental’ fussiness and with lightning fastmovement in all the parts”. The same day 10 May he sent thescore as program suggestion to the State Broadcasting Servicein Copenhagen under the title Denmark’s Radio Fandfare forGrand Orchestra – “fandfare” as a sarcastically meant spellingmistake with an allusion to “the Devil” (fanden = the Devil inDanish). Langgaard had as is known an ambivalent relationshipwith the State Broadcasting Service. The work was not acceptedand the score was therefore returned to Langgaard whonevertheless submitted it again. Full Score-Peng-Peng Gong's Metropolitan Overture was a joint commission of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra. The premiere concert on May 22 2016 was both to open the five-year artistic collaboration between the two orchestras and also to welcome the grand opening of the Shanghai Disneyland. The work is a jubilant merge of Shanghai folk-music and Disney-style scores making it an excellent concert opener or encore.
