This concerto a new addition to the literature for guitar and orchestra casts the guitar almost as a member of the percussion family from the very beginning explosive in its energy easing into song for its secondtheme.An extensive cadenza takes the soloist to the highest note before plunging into an appropriately hectic ending. A simple (but all the more telling) guitar solo opens and closes the middle movement a nocturne withanother extended cadenza. The movement starts in meditation grows into a broad chorale-like melody and moves into rage before the orchestra intervenes to return to the calm of the beginning. The boisterous and carefree flavourof the last movement sketched while on holiday in Antigua during Carnival gives the concerto its nickname.This riotous and exuberant finale generates an irresistible rumba bringing together themes first heard at thevery beginning of the work particularly the rasqueado strumming and the tamburo percussive effects. Antonio Vivaldi (1673-1741) was an Italian composer violinist and teacher in the Baroque era. His name has become synonymous with the series of Violin concertos known as the Four Seasons but he also wrote over 500 other concertos for various instruments as well as dozens of operas and several sacred works. The Concerto No. 23 (RV 425) was written in 1725. Set in the key of C major it was originally scored for solo Mandolin with String Orchestra and Continuo Bass (Cembalo). It has been arranged for Guitar or Mandolin with Piano accompaniment by the French composer Fernand Oubradous .

Ce compositeur, guitariste, Chevalier de Saint-Louis et de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem, Garde de la Manche du Roi, nous a légué des chefs-d'?uvre longtemps restés dans l'obscurité des bibliothèques. La présente édition s'attache à vous en livrer les plus belles pages. La première édition connue de ce concerto fut publiée par Böhme, à Hambourg, en 1802. Il peut sembler curieux qu'une ?uvre aussi enthousiasmante soit restée si longtemps ignorée des guitaristes et du public alors que son existence était parfaitement connue. Ce concerto fut recréé en 2001 à Brest avec l'Ensemble Matheus (dirigé par Jean-Christophe Spinosi). Après l'avoir joué de très nombreuses fois en France et en Espagne, puis enregistré, j'invite tous les guitaristes à partager mon enthousiasme, ma joie et ma passion pour cette ?uvre superbe.
