Nelson wrote an album for Johnny Hodges (Black, Brown and Beautiful, RCA) featuring the compositions of Duke Ellington and also some of his original things. This Ellington tune just romps and stomps right from the start. The ensemble shouts just scream with wonderful voicings that lift you up out of your seat! There is solo space for Alto Sax (of course), Trumpet and Piano. Ellington's melody and Nelson's arrangement ...... an absolute winning combination! Your band will love this one! 5-4-4-4.

Bill Holman's Great Big Band was a sensational ensemble! That album has just been re-issued on Mosaic Records. This chart is an example of Bill's talent for investing old material with brilliant new ideas. It originally featured Bill Perkins on tenor sax and Conte Candoli on trumpet solos. An exciting, amazingly fresh, inventive chart. Recorded on the Bill Holman's Great Big Band CD. 5-4-4-3.

The chart everyone has been waiting for!! Eight minutes of amazing, dynamic, exciting sounds! This arrangement was commissioned and recorded by the SWR Big Band of Stuttgart, Germany. It is, of course, based on the centerpiece of the wildly popular show. Everytime this chart was performed in live concerts in Germany (and elsewhere), the audience just erupted with applause and standing ovations. This isn't an easy chart to play, but it is well worth the effort (similar to The First Circle in that respect). All ranges are fairly reasonable, with the 1st Tpt. part topping out at a written high E. This is recorded on the highly acclaimed CD Towednack, Bob Curnow and the SWR Big Band (available from Sierra Music). 5-4-4-4.

This is a wonderful chart, an old tune in a new dress, as only Bill Holman can do it. It's the exact chart as recorded by the terrific Charlie Barnet Big Band. The tempo is bright, a swinging excursion into the clever writing of Holman. Solo space for piano, alto, tenor, trumpet, and drums. There is a great sax section soli and the usual, wonderful, roaring ensemble shout choruses. A big finish ends an amazing chart. 5-5-4-4 (4 tpts. work just as well).

As recorded on the brilliant CD Afrique, by the Count Basie Orchestra, and also (in another form) by the Buddy Rich Band on the CD Swingin' New Big Band. This chart is an up-tempo swing tune which just roars from beginning to end. Pat plays this at just about every concert of the Group. It is on the First Circle LP. The featured solo is played on Alto Saxophone. This is a two chorus version in the original key, a much more demanding chart than the first version published by Sierra. Your alto soloist will love the chance to play this one. (10 brass) As recorded on Bob Curnow's L.A. Big Band,The Music of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays.

Every once in a while a melody is written that words cannot convey and only the soul understands. Master-of-melodies, Pat Metheny, did just that in his composition of Tell Her You Saw Me, and Bob Curnow magnificently transformed it into a majestic big band arrangement. A ballad throughout that slowly builds in intensity; this piece utilizes woodwind doubles and flugelhorns with a short, written-out piano solo up front. If you are looking to provide a moving ballad for your audiences, then this is it. 5-4-4-4.

A hot, drivin' shuffle by Dominic Spera that is sure to be a big favorite at festivals and concerts everywhere. An extremely bold introduction gets things started on the right foot and then it just gets better and better! Easily opened up for as many solos as you wish, this exciting chart is a real showstopper for a solid band.

Many have tried, but few have been able to match the incredible swing that happens when you combine Billy Byers' arranging with the Count Basie Orchestra. Originally recorded on the Basie album Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra, Hey, Jealous Lover is a medium-swing chart that will excite your band and audiences alike! Filled with typical Basie-esque piano solo fills (written out), there is also room for trumpet and tenor saxophone improvisation. The ensemble writing is powerful and swinging; nothing complex or rhythmically awkward, just a great melody with hard swingin' horn lines and tasty solo spots. 5-4-4-4.

If you are looking for a modern arrangement with a classic feel, Drew Zaremba has done just that with Dave Brubeck's 'Cassandra.' Recorded by the University of North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band on their CD Lab 2014, Drew uses theme and variation to take this marvelous, swinging melody into challenging, extensive and exciting places. In addition to featuring the depth of your ensemble, including woodwind doubles, lots of counterpoint, and tempo and style changes, there is also solo space for alto saxophone and trumpet. This chart is the real deal! 5-4-4-4.

Here is a terrific medium swing chart, also written for Stan Kenton in the 50s. Although it was never recorded commercially by the band, it was played a great deal in live performances throughout the country and is on a number of transcription recordings. It cooks from beginning to end, and features solo space for trumpet and tenor sax, and one of those patented Holman ensemble shout choruses that just swings like crazy! 5-5-5-3.

This is a gorgeous feature for tenor saxophone (there is also a piano solo). Sensuous, warm, lush ..... all those good things. Set in a slow bossa-nova style, this lyrical piece will please your players and audiences alike. Very modest brass ranges (high D for tpt. 1) and easy rhythms make this chart very playable and attractive for just about any band. 5-4-4-4 (Opt. 10 brass).
