Land of the Ancient Peoples-This impressive work by John Higgins is a descriptive essay for band reflecting the mysteries of Native American peoples and their kinship with nature. The varied musical sections are subtitled: “Enchanted Mesa”;“Adobe Village”; “Ancient Voices”; and “Mother Earth Father Sky.” The optional solo for recorder can be played by a solo flute or flute section. This ambitious work was inspired by the Les Cheneaux region in northern Michigan. Written in the form of a suite each movement describes a different element of this area steeped in colorful history and beauty. ?I. EarlyExploration? is a bold statement with stirring brass and powerful percussion writing. ?II. Onomonee? is reminiscent of the early native people to inhabit the region and features a solo Indian Flute (opt. recorderor flute) along with contemporary harmonies and rhythm patterns. ?III. Huron Nocturne? is a marvelously lyric movement which features the woodwinds. ?IV. New Beginnings? brings this impressive work to aclose with an energetic 6/8 pulse and spirited melodies. (8:15)

The distinctive harmonies and sounds of the Renaissance period are used in a wonderfully effective setting by Johnnie Vinson. Including Carol of the Birds Veni Emmanuel and In Dulci Jubilo this festive and unique arrangement also inlcudes optional recorder parts.

Standard US Set (without european suppl. parts)-Perfect Trip derives its title from the horse racing term which refers to the flawless performance of a winning steed. It was written for the 20th anniversary concert of the Ridgewood Concert Band in New Jerseyat the request of the band's founding director Dr. C. Christian Wilhjelm. The piece itself lasts not much more than a typical one mile horse race and depicts the event from the observer's perspective: the initial burst of energyat the starting gate and the ensuing excitement approaching the first turn the suspense as the race develops along the far stretch and the increasing drama as the pack rounds the final turn and heads down the stretch for the bigfinish. Commissioned by the Japan Band Clinic Committee of Yamaha for the Nemu Band Directors Clinic in Nemu no Sato May 18-20 1997.The surprising title of this work is an indication of its content. By combining the somewhat similar names ‘Nemu no Sato’ and ‘Susato’ into a new word Jan Van der Roost has produced a significant and interesting subject. The Yamaha corporation has extensive facilities in Nemu no Sato Japan including a concert hall recording studios hotel and so on. Concerts workshops clinics and other events are held here including the annual Nemu Band Directors Clinic which consists of numerous musical events. Jan Van der Roost served as guest conductor andspeaker in 1994. He was invited again for the 1997 clinic this time with a composition assignment. The difficulty level of his new piece was to be Grade 2 - 3 bands. With this in mind Mr. Van der Roost strove to create a renaissance-like sound. Simultaneously he wished to create a tribute to Tielman Susato who like Jan Van der Roost lived and worked in Antwerp in the 16th century. The first performance of Nemu-Susato was conducted by the composer performed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Band and took place during the Nemu Band Directors Clinic on May 19 1997.
