“Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the Flute. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that his compositions for the instrument are at the forefront of the Flute's repertoire, Sonata No. 2 being no exception. After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opéra, he was appointed as professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatoire as well as principal conductor of leading orchestras. It was during this time that Gaubert composed, including his Sonata No. 2 which premiered in 1925. Addressing many technical features, including flourishing semiquaver passages, a wide range, emotion, intervals, chromaticism and complex rhythms, Sonata No. 2 is a challenging yet riveting and stirring piece for aspiring flautists.â€.

Contemporary Japanese composer, Yuko Uebayashi moved to Paris in 1998. Uebayashi's works have been met with much success in both Japan and France, Sonata for Flute and Piano being no exception. Flautist Jean Ferrandis described Uebayashi's works as gems that, although they are so different, they yet belong to the same world, a world of vivacity, dreams, tenderness, humour, and one that is subtly contradicted by vehemence, virtuosity, melancholy and sorrow. Sonata for Flute and Piano is made up of four movements with a typical performance lasting around 26 minutes. Sonata for Flute and Piano is modern in style, exploiting tonality, rhythm and the ensemble, making this a sublime addition to the advanced repertoire of the instrument.

This edition of the 28 variations on the aria Ich schlief, da traumte mir for flute and bassa continuo by Johann Joachim Quantz, published here for the first time, is based on a manuscript in the Preussischen Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, whose title reads: Solo Traverso cole Basso Achtundzwantzig Variation es uber die Arie Ich schlief da traumte mir del Sigr: Qvanz The high degree which the art of flute playing had reached at that time is very clearly displayed in this set of variations, a form unusual in Quantz's output. For this reason, this work is very suitable as a study as weil as for performance. The realization of the figured bass and the indications of phrasing merely represent one of many possibilities, and are only intended as suggestions. The source is in places full of errors, and these have been tacitly corrected. Frank Nagel, Basel, June 1974.

In the 19th century nationalist themes came into fashion. Composers drew on songs and dances from their native lands, working them into paraphrased adaptations, potpourri arrangements and sets of variations or incorporating folk elements from various cultures in their compositions. Flautist Wilhelm Popp (1828-1902), who wrote music for his instrument at every level of difficulty, also took up this popular trend. In this collection seven of his easily playablecompositions have been chosen with musical links to different European countries. Here again Popp shows his ability to distil the essence from musical styles and fashions of his time, setting lyrical and virtuoso passages so well for the instrument that their effectiveness far outweighs any difficulties. The popularity of his pieces for tuition purposes, school concerts or youth music competitions remains undiminished to this day. This edition is essentially based on the first printed versions of these pieces - with just a small number of printing errors and inconsistencies corrected without comment.

Even though Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), admittedly, was no fan of the flute, he wrote unforgettable music for this instrument 'that I can't stand': two concertos, a double concerto with harp, the original version of the Wind Concertante and the four flute quartets. Commissioned by the Dutch physician and amateur musician Ferdinand Dejean, Mozart wrote his two solo concertos in 1777/78 during a stay in Mannheim. As the middle movement of the Concerto in G major KV 313 supposedly was too difficult for the client -with regard to the playing technique and/or music - the composer wrote an alternative version, 'Andante' KV 315 (285e). This nice individual movement is now presented in a carefully edited new edition, with a cadenza of the editor - a serenade-like setting that offers the soloist many possibilities for cantabile playing.

The compositions, arrangements and studies by Wilhelm Popp (1828-1903) are particularly popular amongst flautists today. Popp wrote more than 600 pieces at different levels of difficulty. His brilliant salon music can be easily played by intermediate flautists and to great effect. This edition is part of the new Schott Student Edition series which offers varied literature at five different levels of difficulty.

Known internationally for superior flute editions, Robert Stallman continues his considerable expansion of the flute repertoire with re-creations, or “new†works for flute by Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Chopin, Dvořák, and other great composers.Conceived originally as a work for solo piano, this arrangement of Dvořák’s Suite in A Major for flute and piano is based on both the piano and orchestra versions. It is one in a series of Stallman’s “new†works for flute. Dvořák composed the Suite in A Major in 1894, inspired by his happy and fruitful stay in the “New World†—a period that produced some of his greatest works, full of thematic freshness, raw energy and folk influences, both American and Old World Czech. The “New World†Symphony, Cello Concerto, “American†Quartet, String Quintet in E≤ Major, the Violin Sonatina and this A Major Suite are all cut from the same musical cloth—textured with his personal impressions of the Wild West’s fascinating Indian and Afro-American music, its God-fearing and friendly people, its vast open spaces and its awe-inspiring natural beauty.PrefaceConceived originally as a work for solo piano, the Suite in A Major was composed by Dvořák in 1894, during his famous two-year visit to the United States. He wrote the work in a mere ten days, and a year later made a full orchestration of it. The Suite was first performed in this second version in 1910 in Prague at the Rudolfinum. Dvořák, who died in 1904, never had a chance to hear a performance of this stirring orchestral realization. The Suite was inspired by the composer’s happy and fruitful stay in the “New Worldâ€, especially by his unforgettable summers spent in the quiet Czech-American village of Spillville, Iowa—a period that produced some of his greatest works, full of thematic freshness, raw energy and folk influences, both American and Old World Czech. The “New World†Symphony, Cello Concerto, “American†Quartet, String Quintet in Eb Major, the Violin Sonatina and this A Major Suite are all cut from the same musical cloth—textured with his personal impressions of the Wild West’s fascinating Indian and Afro-American music, its God-fearing and friendly people, its vast open spaces and its awe-inspiring natural beauty.Several of the Suite’s affecting melodies find echoes in these other, better known compositions of this American period. Wistful themes abound in all five movements, reflecting Dvořák’s transformative American experience as it found resonance in his own emotions. Contrasting with deeply felt, contemplative passages are Dvořák’s joyous and tempestuous expressions, which open the second, third and final movements. This arrangement for flute and piano is based on both the piano and orchestra versions. It is one in a series of my “new†works for flute by some of our greatest composers and I am delighted to add it to the collection. I predict that the A Major Suite will become a popular addition to our Romantic recital repertoire, much like the Dvořák Sonatina.—Robert StallmanMarblehead, Mass.June 1, 2018.
