Two solos in jazz idiom for pedal or non-pedal harp-Two solos in the jazz idiom for Pedal or Non-Pedal Harp by Stewart Green. Stewart Green began writing music for the Piano at an early age. Taking up the Viola and Oboe in his teens he later went to the University College of North Wales (Bangor) where he studied composition with among others William Matthias and Reginald Smith Brindle. Gaining a B. Mus. (hons) degree in 1960 he returned to his old school in Richester to teach class and instrumental music. Four years later he enlisted as oboist to the Band of HM Coldstream Guards which opened many doors including performances of his compositions and arrangements in many National venues on discand broadcast by the BBC on Radios 2 & 3. His years at Bangor had enabled him to fulfil a childhood dream of learning the Harp which he was later able to develop when he left the army and moved with his wife Sue and young family to Lowestoft as a peripatetic woodwind tutor for Suffolk County Music Service. His Flights Of Fancy and Blistering Along! appear on ABRSM and Trinity College Harp examination syllabuses while the Spartan Press publication Saxofun is on Suffolk's own exam syllabus. Since 1999 Stewart has been senior Woodwind Tutor for Suffolk and since 2002 Harp tutor as well! Stewart's recent publication She'll Be Comin' Round The Mountain was written for the North Suffolk String Orchestra as was Haunted House. Spookily this received its first performance at Lowestoft accompanied by a July Thunderstorm!

Born in 1929 French composer Pierick Houdy was a student of Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire. He led a successful career as director of many institutions and choirs and his compositions remain known to this day Sonata For Harp being no exception. Composed in 1983 Sonata For Harp contributes to a substantial catalogue of works by Houdy. The Sonata comprises three movements and a typical performance lasts about twelve minutes. The work is modern in style and addresses a range of technical features. Suitable for advanced harpists Houdy's Sonata For Harp is anexciting addition to the contemporary Harp repertoire and makes for a evocative performance.

Arranged for Harp-Say Something is an original song by the American duo A Great Big World. The lyrics are about letting go when a relationship ends. It became an international hit when Christina Aguilera joined A Great Big World on a re-recorded version in 2013. Sylvia Woods has made a 4-page advanced beginner to intermediate arrangement playable on either lever or pedal harp. This music features a pedal point (also called a pedal note or pedal tone) which is a sustained or continually repeated note that is held constant while harmonies change in other parts. A pedal point is usually found in the bass but here it is in the middle register. Virtually every measure includes a middle Cnote on the downbeat. Sometimes it is played with the right hand and at other times with the left. But it is almost always there. This pedal point harmony is what originally drew me into this beautiful piece of music the first time I heard it on the radio. The music is in the key of C and no sharping levers are required as there are no lever changes. Fingerings lyrics and chord symbols are included. The harp range required is 24 strings from a low C up to an E. It can be played on 24-string to 26-string harps with a C as the lowest string if you play both hands an octave higher than written.

Par PEPIN CAMILLE. Nighthawks est une oeuvre pour harpe solo. Lorsqu' Anaïs Gaudemard [1] m'a demandé d'écrire cette oeuvre, elle souhaitait l'intégrer à un programme sur le thème des oiseaux. J'ai immédiatement pensé à l'oeuvre Nighthawks (1942) - ou Oiseaux de nuit - du peintre réaliste américain Edward Hopper (1882-1967). Inspirée par cette oeuvre, j'ai conçu la pièce d'un seul tenant comme un voyage au coeur de ce tableau. Hopper y projette un 'instantané' de la vie quotidienne américaine. La scène se déroule à une heure avancée de la nuit et plusieurs atmosphères s'en dégagent. En effet, l'oeil est à la fois attiré par cette rue sombre, déserte, et immaculée d'un centre-ville américain - intrigué par la situation figée des quatre personnages à l'intérieur d'un diner aux couleurs vives - et hypnotisé par l'éclat de l'immense vitrine du bar. Contrastante avec l'obscurité de la rue, la lumière de cette vitre éclairée au néon est saisissante. Elle sépare ainsi les deux ambiances du tableau. La vue du spectateur à travers elle se fait de l'extérieur vers l'intérieur du bar. L'absence de porte de sortie donne l'impression que les personnages sont isolés et leur solitude est encore renforcée par cette vitre qui entoure la scène éclairée - comme s'ils étaient 'sous cloche'. A l'intérieur du diner, un homme vu de dos mange - un couple se tient côte à côte (l'homme fume - la femme est vêtue de rouge) - un serveur s'affaire. Nous ne savons rien d'eux. Que font-ils à une heure si tardive ? Où se trouve la sortie ? De quoi discutent-ils ? Se connaissent-ils ? J'ai voulu concevoir musicalement cette scène du point de vue du spectateur, comme si nous étions happés, aspirés à l'intérieur même du tableau. L'introduction - Mystérieux, sombre - fait entendre les douze coups de minuit et nous plonge dans l'obscurité de cette rue typiquement américaine. De cette atmosphère nocturne naît un chant étrange - presque 'ouaté' avec les sons xylophoniques - comme si nous ne pouvions l'entendre distinctement à travers la vitre lumineuse qui sépare la rue et le bar. Happés par cette lumière vive, nous passons à travers la vitrine et rentrons progressivement à l'intérieur du diner au moyen d'une boucle hypnotique répétée inlassablement, comme si nous rentrions dans un état de transe - Hypnotique. C'est la tension sous-jacente de cette situation figée des personnages que j'ai voulu représenter dans le passage central - Rythmique et pulsé. Puis, nous sortons de cette sensation d'hypnose en repassant à travers la vitre du bar et retrouvons l'atmosphère nocturne de cette rue déserte et immaculée - Hypnotique - Mystérieux. The tunes are appropriate fornylon or wire-strung Harps and two songs require lever flips.

The composer writes: 'This piece was composed using as its basis the compositional technique of serialism in which a fixed series of notes are used to make the harmonic and melodic base of a piece. I looked at the twelve Munro???s on the Isle of Skye known as The Cuillin and used their height???s to get the twelve notes required in serialism. The tallest is Sg?rr Alasdair at 992 meters and Sg?rr a??? Mhadaidh is the shortest at 918 meters. I added together the number of meters to get a single number that could be related to a note in the scale. I wrote down the scale I had chosen and assigned each Cuillin a note the heights of the Cuillin gave me the order which gave me the tune Iuse. I decided not to use a conventional scale so I put on my B and F levers which gives the scale a darker colour that I feel matches the mystery of the Cuillin. Although the technique used to achieve the scale is serial the piece itself cannot be described as a serial piece and I have allowed the music to develop more freely and organically than a system would allow.'
