The composer writes: 'This piece was composed using as its basis the compositional technique of serialism in which a fixed series of notes are used to make the harmonic and melodic base of a piece. I looked at the twelve Munro???s on the Isle of Skye known as The Cuillin and used their height???s to get the twelve notes required in serialism. The tallest is Sg?rr Alasdair at 992 meters and Sg?rr a??? Mhadaidh is the shortest at 918 meters. I added together the number of meters to get a single number that could be related to a note in the scale. I wrote down the scale I had chosen and assigned each Cuillin a note the heights of the Cuillin gave me the order which gave me the tune Iuse. I decided not to use a conventional scale so I put on my B and F levers which gives the scale a darker colour that I feel matches the mystery of the Cuillin. Although the technique used to achieve the scale is serial the piece itself cannot be described as a serial piece and I have allowed the music to develop more freely and organically than a system would allow.'

Companion CD to the Songbook-This companion CD will assist harp players in learning the pieces in the Pachelbel's Canon and Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring books. Since many will want to ?play along? as they learn Sylvia has recordedthese pieces slower than they are usually played and as ?straight? as possible with little or no expression or rhythmic variations. The Canon was recorded at a metronome marking of 92 and Jesu at 100. Inall of the duet versions one harp part is on one tract of the stereo and the second harp part (or the flute part) is on the other. If you can adjust the separate channels you can hear each part separately. The three versions ofthe Canon are played first in the original key of D and then in the key of G. All the versions of the Jesu are without repeats and go straight to the second ending.

Born in 1929 French composer Pierick Houdy was a student of Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire. He led a successful career as director of many institutions and choirs and his compositions remain known to this day Sonata For Harp being no exception. Composed in 1983 Sonata For Harp contributes to a substantial catalogue of works by Houdy. The Sonata comprises three movements and a typical performance lasts about twelve minutes. The work is modern in style and addresses a range of technical features. Suitable for advanced harpists Houdy's Sonata For Harp is anexciting addition to the contemporary Harp repertoire and makes for a evocative performance.

Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before embarking upon a successful composing career. The composer wrote for a variety of instrumentations and his works remain popular to this day Six Pieces for Harp being no exception. Composed in 1916-1917 Six Pieces for solo Harp is suitable for advanced level harpists. Ibert was a unique composer who did not associate himself with any particular style. His music is generally lighthearted often reflecting the composer's wit and humour. The second movement of Six Pieces Scherzetto reflects the composer's humoresqueand quirky nature. Containing a variety of musical aspects and techniques Ibert's Scherzetto from Six Pieces is an exciting addition to the advanced level Harp repertoire.
