Cloud breathing is a technique in Chinese martial arts involving short, sharp inhaling breaths and a slow exhale to oxygenate the body in preparation for fighting, meditation and healing. In this work, the piano begins in the upper register with tones like wind chimes, with the oboe entering beneath. This meditative first section leads to sudden shifts in harmony under a quiet oboe melody. Activity increases, leading to an oboe cadenza and a fast section based on rapid repeated notes in the oboe with the piano accompanying with contrapuntal lines. A brief piano solo leads to fragments of melody from the slow opening, now transformed. After a fortissimo climax, the quiet wind chime opening suddenly returns. Or Organ-Born in Geneva of a jeweller father (and excellent flautist) and singer mother Marguerite Roesgen-Champion (1894-1976) was one of those rare women who reconciled family life (in 1926 she settled in Paris with her husband a philately merchant) with a professional activity devoted to music. Her abundant output graced all genres with a predilection for sacred pieces the art song the Piano and chamber music. Published respectively in 1950 and 1953 the two Nocturnes for Oboe and Piano (or Organ) have their place in the glorious tradition of French music from the between-the-wars period. The first Nocturne subtitled 'Noël' is dedicated to Pierre Bajeux(1899-1961) who taught the oboe class at the Paris Conservatoire as of 1941. Of classic ABA construction this piece as simple as it is expressive is in the form of a pastorale: here the gentle opening recitative unfolds its dreamy melancholic volutes of which the modal character would have appealed to Charles Koechlin. The second Nocturne presents subtle modulations that give it a refined elegance. In both cases this tastefully polished music invites us to stroll in an Arcadian landscape bathed in azure: 'There all is order and beauty / Luxury calm and voluptuousness'.

Cyril Scott was an English composer writer and poet. He was essentially a late romantic composer whose style was at the same time strongly influenced by impressionism. His harmony was notably exotic. Scott wrote around four hundred works which include two mature symphonies three operas three Piano concertos concertos for Violin Cello Oboe and Harpsichord several overtures four oratorios as well as a mass of chamber music.Scott composed his Concerto For Oboe & Orchestra in 1946. The three movements (Molto vigoroso Andante Pastorale:Tranquillo and Rondo giocoso: Allegronon troppo cadenza Con spirit) are published here with a Piano reduction of the orchestra accompaniment.Complete performance time of the entire piece is approximately 20 minutes.

First published in 1969 this tranquil and slow piece with it's gently undulating melody and soft chordal accompaniment is ideal for the repertoire of any Oboe player of grade four and above. The solo line is also suitable forperformance on the Oboe Clarinet Horn and Cello.

Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) studied under Gabriel Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire. His compositions proved to be extremely versatile from Operas and Ballets to solo works. Grovlez's Sarabande et Allegro is a sublime addition to the Oboe repertoire. Much of the composer's works show neo-classical features which is also the case in Sarabande et Allegro where the texture is predominantly melody-dominated homophony perfect cadences are frequently heard and modulations to related keys occur. Grovlez's D minor Sarabande is in a steady triple metre superblycontrasted by the fast Allegro composed in the relative major. All these features make for an enjoyable and delightful performance.

Written the year before his death and dedicated to the memory of Sergey Prokofiev this piece is the last of Poulenc's wind sonatas and is a work of profound poignancy and delicacy.
