The form of this work is not so much based on the classical symphony, but is closer to a song cycle structure which has now grown to include 13 movements for choir and orchestra. The Romantic characteristics and form of the 8th Symphony are both reminiscent of Gustav Mahler’s choral symphonic works and his Lied von der Erde. Krzysztof Penderecki here extends and augments his expressive musical material, for example through cluster techniques and glissandi, possibilities which he has been systematically exploring since the 1950s. Cantata in two parts-In 1736 Handel composed ?Alexander?s Feast? or ?The Power of Musick? a two-part cantata based on John Dryden?s poem of the same name.In 1790 at the suggestion of Baron Gottfried van Swieten Mozart arranged this work using a German translation of the poem made by Karl Wilhelm Ramler in 1770. B-Dur-Francesco Durante's Magnificat in B flat major is one of his most important works and also one of the most siginifcant settings of the Magnficat text here in cantata form. This work displays a mastery of the polyhonic style and though the use of certain pre-classical 'modern' elements its various forms never sound archaic rather the work presents a synthesis leading to a unique style. For a performance during the Christmas season Christmas hymns can be inserted between each of the individual movements. The autograph of the Missa brevis K.192 (186f) known as the Little Credo Mass (because of the Credo calls interspersed in the text of the third movement) is dated Salzburg 24 June 1774. This Mass intended for Sundays and minor feasts was in any case written for Salzburg Cathedral in the archives of which is preserved an authentic set of parts containing markings by Mozart and his father. Anyone who is familiar with Bruckner?s symphonies and great masses will probably be astonished upon hearing his Missa solemnis of 1854: can the tradition of the Viennese classics still be so clearly evident in a work by Bruckner? And yet, isn?t it also possible to hear much of Bruckner?s later style?With this edition, the earliest of Bruckner?s orchestral masses is now available as an Urtext edition.
