The original version for violin dates from 1981, thus being one of the early works by the Israeli composer who teaches at Harvard University. About 35 years later, Chaya Czernowin wrote the arrangement for viola which was first performed by Maria Ritzenthaler at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 2015. In the same year, she composed another version for violoncello solo.

The title of this work came from an acquaintance who used the phrase while discussing the importance of fully living the moments we are given. I. Where Was I? II. If Only For a Moment III. Soaring IV. Do Flies Have Wings? V. Dorian Flow Pieces of Time was composed for, and is dedicated to, violist Anne Black. She gave the first performance in August, 2022 in Eastport, Maine. In spring 2020, coronavirus began spreading throughout the world and in many places people were subjected to quarantine. It was then that Hiyoli Togawa, a violist, proposed that the BIS record label release a viola disc entitled Songs of Solitude of short compositions by different contemporary composers, as a sort of reflection of the present time and offering comfort to listeners in their solitude. Hiyoli asked Kalevi Aho (b. 1949) to compose a piece in which she could play and sing simultaneously. The meditative, melancholy Am Horizont is dedicated to Hiyoli Togawa and composed in April 2020.
