“Almiraâ€, Handel’s first opera, was well received when premiered in 1705 at the Theater am Gänsemarkt in Hamburg. The director was Reinhard Keiser, who, remarkably, had himself already set Friedrich Christian Feustking’s text to music. The role of Fernando was sung by Johann Mattheson. The translation used by Handel leaves several Italian arias in their original language, resulting in a delightful mixture of German and Italian.The opera which, after sundry entangled romances, ends in the wedding of three couples, is characterised by exuberant scenes: the procession at Almira’s crowning ceremony, a duel, a prison scene and a masked-ball involving the three continents Europe, Africa and Asia. The vocal score to “Almira†by George Frideric Handel brings about a small sensation: Whilst conducting a reenactment of this work in 1732, Georg Philipp Telemann removed the Aria no. 28 “Ingrato, spietato†from his conducting score. Since then this aria has been deemed lost. Due to necessity only the edited vocal text devoid of any music was presented in the 1994 volume of the “Halle Handel Editionâ€. Thanks to a recently discovered contemporary manuscript copy from the beginning of the 18th century which was found in the music library of the Mariengymnasium in Jever, this aria has now been made available to performers for the first time in this new vocal score edition. Previous to this the corresponding pages could only be seen as a facsimile in an article of the “Göttinger Händel-Beiträgeâ€.Now the aria can be performed again. Furthermore, with the help of this new source, missing measures in the basso continuo which had initially been completed by the editor of the “Halle Handel Edition†volume, could be reconstructed from the basso continuo part of the Bellante aria “Ich brenne zwar†(no. 71).

The cantata Ihr werdet weinen und heulen [You will weep and wail] BWV 103 for Jubilate Sunday is one of the cantatas composed on texts by the Leipzig poetess Christiane Mariane von Ziegler with which Bach concluded his second annual cycle of cantatas after he had abandoned the annual cycle of chorale cantatas at Easter 1725. A large-scale choral movement on Jesus's words quoted from the Sunday gospel reading opens the cantata; the choir is interrupted by a bass arioso - the vox Christi. Both arias are introduced by a recitative with arioso conclusion; in each, exquisite solo instruments are deployed: flauto piccolo in the contralto aria and trumpet in the tenor aria. Reprint of the first edition. Friedrich Spitta recommended to Herzogenberg that he set Gerhard Tersteegen's text Gott ist Gegenwartig on the occasion of that poet's 200th birthday. Besides the obbligato organ, Herzogenberg restricted the instrumentation to strings, two trumpets, three trombones and timpani, and thus achieved a majestic quality which corresponds to the text. After the really well-known cantata Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott BWV 80, Bach's only other cantata for Reformation Day is Gott, der Herr, ist Sonn und Schild BWV 79. The central chorale movement Nun danket alle Gott has become extremely famous separately from the cantata. This movement is characterised by the catchy melody of the two horn parts with their interludes between the lines of the chorale. These in turn are taken from the freely-composed opening chorus, thus forming a surprising link between the movement for chorus and the chorale. The cantata Ich liebe den Hochsten von ganzem Gemute (I love the Almighty with all of my spirit) BWV 174 was composed for Whit Monday 1729. It probably belongs to Bach's fourth cycle of cantatas, known as the Picander cycle. Most of the cantata is taken up by the introductory Sinfonia. This is a reworking of the first movement of the famous third Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1048. Bach took the movement almost unaltered and simply added wind parts to strengthen the sound to the nine string parts (three violins, three violas, three violoncelli) and basso continuo - two corni da caccia and two oboes, reinforced by two violins, an oboe da caccia (taille) and a viola. The following movements (aria, recitative, aria) form a distinct contrast with their chamber music scoring (two oboes or one or two string parts with basso continuo).
