Syncretic Version. Par LISZT FRANZ. In his 'Art of Fugue' Bach himself introduced a theme based on the four letters of his name: the notes we know as Bb A C B correspond to the German note names B A C H. Since that time, many composers have expressed their admiration for incomparable master by writing their own pieces of music on this theme. The work based on this theme by Franz Liszt is without any doubt the most important of them all - indeed, it represents a major landmark in the whole of the organ repertoire. It was composed in 1855 and given its first performance in the cathedral of Merseburg by Alexander Winterberger, to whom the work was dedicated. Liszt produced a second version of the work in 1869/70 and in 1870 he also wrote a piano transcription. It was a pity that the organist should not be able to use the ideas with which Liszt subsequently enriched his own adaptation. That is why, without adding anything that was not written by Liszt himself, Guillou has incorporated everything contained in the organ composition and the piano transcription in this 'syncretic' version of the work./ Répertoire / Orgue

The B.A.C.H. motif has been known and used for centuries but enjoyed a great revival in the late 19th century as composers paid homage to the composer J.S. Bach. It derives from the German nomenclature and is expressed in standard notation as Bb-A-C-B. The Fantasia And Fugue On B.A.C.H. is one of the most famous Organ works of Franz Liszt (1811-1886). The piece was intended for the inauguration of the famous Ladegast Organ at Merseburg Cathedral but sadly it wasn’t finished in time. Liszt then revised the work in 1870 and produced the version that survives today. A well-loved piece no organist’s library iscomplete without it.

Franz Schubert’s song Ave Maria is among his very most famous works and one of the best-loved works of he classical repertoire. In this version published by the Spanish Musical Union in 1945 the song has been adapted for solo Piano and the key transposed from B flat to C.Schubert’s Ave Maria was originally composed in 1825 as one of seven songs created from the epic poem The Lady of the Lake by Walter Scott written to set the German translation of the work. The song was fairly quickly adapted for the words of the Catholic prayer Ave Maria and the Schubert melody is now frequently performed in the religious context.
