The latest in a series of pieces written for CoMA string players  Bee Haven is a sound environment an imaginary outdoor space populated by plants flowers and bees. The sound of honeybee humming is the main focus of the work; around this the bees’ ‘haven’ (a living environment free from agricultural poisons and habitat destruction) is created through quiet air noise and gentle brushing of the instruments. There are no events in the piece save one brief flurry of rain; placing themselves within it listeners become part of the imagined space for the duration of the work.

Beethoven’s scores for string quartet are cornucopias of techniques and musicality. They were certainly not meant for pure entertainment. Ending up with Beethoven’s quartet Op. 59 No. 1 as a reference for this piece I even used elements from this quartet in my own composition. Beethoven’s position as a free artist has been of great importance to all following composers. This is of equal inspiration as his music. As a free artist one has to reflect upon our own time and not be afraid of allowing reality affect our work. When I was in the middle of writingthis piece something horrible happened in my neighbourhood. A bomb exploded in Oslo and a killer shot teenagers on an island summer camp. My nation’s reputation as a peaceful country to live in was drastically and forever changed. It was hard to compose. Papers and online media were soon filled with horrible pictures from the events. The lead-coloured skies being a recurring sight. The ambiguity in the title reflects both hope and dread. Beethoven’s light shines through strong and full of life! The piece was commissioned by the Engegård Quartet in 2011 and appears the recording String Quartets vol IV: Schubert-Ratkje-Britten-Haydn. Full Score-Vivace (2010) for string orchestra began its musical life as the third movement of my Sonata for Guitar (2009) recorded by Isaac Bustos on MSR Classics [MS 1581]. While writing the sonata I began to realize what a symphonic instrument the guitar really is and how well idiomatic guitar figurations might translate to the orchestra. As the title suggests Vivace is a short lively piece tinged with spiritual uplift. Supported by a steady rhythmic ostinato in stretto the broad melody (in slow harmonic rhythm) is presented first in the highest voice and then answered in a lower one. The dovetailing of gestures and its consequent antiphonal character permeate the movement.Often the melody is presented in harmony at the interval of the 7th or 9th. As with many of my recent compositions variation color and drama are enhanced by the juxtaposition of pandiatonic passages with those that are chromatic and dissonant. --Peter Lieuwen Vivace has been recorded by the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra on MSR Classics [MS 1582].

Originally written with seven movements An English Suite is well-known for its tuneful strains of folk-style melodies brilliantly presented in the familiar English style of Elgar and Vaughan Williams. Parry's suite hasbeen reworked to place it within the reach of most string ensembles and includes three of its best movements – Prelude Minuet and Frolic.

The Lamb one of composer John Tavener’s most beloved frequently-performed and often-recorded works was composed in a single afternoon in 1982 as a gift for the composer’s three-year-old nephew.While the original was an unaccompanied Choral piece that set William Blake’s poem The Lamb this adaptation is an extremely effective and moving work for String Orchestra. The arrangement may be performed aloneor in accompaniment to a Chorus. John Tavener was that rare creature a composer of serious music and serious religious music who also achieved commercial success. He burst into the popular consciousness with theperformance of his Song for Athene at the funeral of Princess Diana but had been a highly respected and frequently-performed composer since the premiere of his dramatic cantata The Whale in 1968. The Lamb hasappeared on nearly forty different recordings.

Beethoven's Egmont Overture is one of the most famous pieces in the orchestral repertoire. Until now there has not been a string version that captures the full effect of the original. Since many directors have expressed the need for good literature for larger string programs Robert McCashin is pleased to offer this shorter arrangement which effectively utilizes the full string orchestra. Excellent for exposing your students to a classic without having to recruit wind players.

This hauntingly beautiful melody is an ideal teaching piece for expressive style and 6/8 meter. Taken from Bizet's stage work The Pearl Fishers the style of the vocal melody has been wonderfully transformed for string orchestra by Robert Longfield.

These arrangements were written for string ensembles in primary and secondary schools music centres prep schools and for various ensembles at Charterhouse. They grew out of a need for playable yet musically challenging arrangements where maximum 'effect' is obtained by using naturally resonant keys and idiomatic bowings - and have been used and honed over many years. They also recognise the fact that in many schools Viola players are scarce; most of the easier arrangements are therefore in three parts with optional Viola (doubling second Violin) and optional Double Bass (Viola still optional) which can be played if necessary by a Cellist (special part provided). Thearrangements ensure that all departments have the tune or thematic material at some stage - not just the first Violins!
