Gunter Habicht composed music for folk instruments and contributions to educational literature as well as works for wind orchestra, chamber and orchestral music, including the Sinfonietta, published in 1964 by VEB Breitkopf & Hartel Musikverlag Leipzig, and the award-winning Quartettino 1969 for wind instruments, created for a composition contest organized by the Association of Composers and Musicologists on the occasion of the GDR's 20th anniversary. With an easy piano accompaniment, the sonatina for clarinet and piano Temperaments, written in the same year, is particularly aimed at more advanced music students and amateur musicians. Each of the three movements represents one temperament (1. sanguine type, 2. melancholic type, 3. choleric type) that needs to be worked out during the rehearsals. From 1935 to 1939, Gunter Habicht (1916-2010) studied with Herbert Viecenz and Boris Blacher (music theory and composition) and with Walther Meyer-Giesow and Ernst Hintze (conducting) at the Dresden Conservatory. In 1951, Gunter Habicht taught at an elementary school in Leipzig, and in 1952, he was appointed specialist lecturer for music at the Zentralhaus fur Volkskunst. From 1955 to 1981, he was a teacher of music theory and clarinet at the Leipzig City Music School.

Morton Gould, equally comfortable in the worlds of both serious and light music, presented his symphonettes (an Americanization of the term sinfonietta, much like kitchenette and dinette) as works of a truly American vernacular, drawing on popular culture as well as classical forms. His American Symphonette No. 2 was the work that first made Gould a name among the American public through radio, with the second movement (Pavanne) a pop orchestra standard to this day. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4Sax(opt.; AATB; all dCl): 2.3.3.0: Perc(1): Hp(or Pno): Gtr: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). The original condensed score is included with this set, but the full score has been extracted from the complete work and also included.

This late work in the composer's exquisite, occasionally austere sonority with the movements Intrada, Adagietto, Scherzo and Finale (Praludium and Fughetta) last approximately 15 minutes. A fascinating challenge for ambitious ensembles.

Leo Janácek (1854-1928) wrote a large portion of his most distinctive music late in life, following the success of a revised version of his opera Jenufa in 1916. His extensive research of the national folklore had a great impact on his work as a composer. Inspired by a military band performance in a park, the Sinfonietta opens with a military-style fanfare for brass and percussion. It received its commission from a Czech gymnastics association to celebrate the Eighth National Sokol Rally which took place in Prague in the summer of 1926. The Czech Philharmonic gave the first performance on June 26th of that year under the direction of Vaclav Talich. The inner movements provide contrasting melodic and rhythmic material, characterized by rhythmic shifts, abrupt mood changes, and fragments of folk dance. The final movement climbs through a long, intensifying sequence to reprise the opening music, now taken up by the full orchestra. Urtext of Schumanns Sinfonietta

That Schumann truly dug his heels into symphonic creation becomes clear at the latest when we look not only at his four well-known symphonies, but also at the works between the genres, such as the Overture, Scherzo and Finale. Unlike the traditional symphonic form, this work has no slow movement. Schumann spoke of it as a suite which hints at a loose connection of movements and as a sinfonietta. Ultimately, he decided to name it after the headings of the three movements which also share common traits among one another. Overture, Scherzo and Finale is being published here for the first time with an Urtext score and parts. The genesis of the work was marked by corrections and revisions. Schumann subjected the work to a thorough revision after the premiere performance and, after the publication of the orchestral parts in 1846, made more changes for the first edition of the score seven years later.Urtext of Schumanns Sinfonietta.
