There is a wealth of Christmas repertoire for choirs to choose from and sometimes it is difficult to select which arrangement you want of your traditional carols. It is refreshing when you get a selection which has a new version of a familiar carol plus two carols which you think you should know but donâ??t. This is the case with Joanna Gillâ??s three new carols. â??Sir Christèmasâ? a traditional British carol in the setting by William Mathias has been a popular choice for many years. Handel's spectacular Oratorio was composed in 1744 from a libretto by Charles Jennens that describes the fall of Babylon. Although less successful in it's day than the popular Italian opera this work is full of invention and dramatic skill with the Jewish Babylonian Persian and Medes masses having their own distinctive musics that were juxtaposed to create a tense dramatic conflict.Composed in the same year as the magnificent Hercules the two Oratorios represent the very best of Handel's dramatic writing. POD-Richard Rodney Bennett's Lullaby Baby is dedicated to the Choir of King's College Cambridge. This work for SATB choir unaccompanied is a setting of text by John Phillip.Duration: 3 minutes. 'This delightful setting of a 16th-century text was written for the choir of King’s College Cambridge and requires fine intonation especially in the jazz-influenced harmonies. A good performance of this carol will create a momentary time of peace amid the jollity of Christmas'. 'Sunday by Sunday’ December 2017   Lullaby Baby a 1986 setting of words by the 16th-century John Phillip (alsoset by Britten) is dedicated to King's College Cambridge and needs such a choir to do justice to the richly varied harmonies which set the repeated stanzas and refrain.
