These five part-songs were composed over ten years from 1903 to 1913 but only the first was published in the composer’s lifetime. Bridge’s early works those written before the first World War were more late Romantic in style warmly expansive than his mature works. These songs display Bridge’s skill and craftsmanship.British composer Frank Bridge was active in the early decades of the 20th century and was a highly respected conductor violist and teacher his sole composition student having been Benjamin Britten. Britten honoured his former teacher in his work Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge based on a theme from one of Bridge’s pieces for String quartet.

Composed in 1981 this work is a setting of a sequence from the Mass for the Feast of St Thomas found in the missal of the Hereford use.The text is a conventional hymn of praise but it is distinguished by a lively andattractive rhythm and as this rhythm would have been lost in translation I have set it in the original Latin. The work is in the form of theme and variations and is characterised by a gradual crescendo throughout. It beginsvery quietly with solo timpani and then the choir sing the theme in unison unaccompanied by flutes bells timpani and lower strings.

Revised edition and Organ accompaniment. The fair copy was completed on 31 May 1933. The first edition included a piano part for rehearsal only. OUP sought an estimate for printing offprints of all theindividual movements in 1933 though only the theme and variations 3-5 were issued separately (see below). However in 1938 230 copies of variation 1 were produced especially for the Cambridge University Music Society. [OUP file251] The work was revised in October 1955 for the performance by the Purcell Singers; [see notes to original Decca recording and BB to OUP 16.07.1957 and date on 1958 edition] the optional organ part (edited by Ralph Downes) wasadded in 1957-58 and replaced the piano part in the score. [It was probably completed in late 1958: see IH to OUP: 13.02.1958 (OUP Archive)]

A hymn text that reflects the redemptive heart of God for His people is lovingly set to new music. Using words that have been celebrated even outside the sanctuary, this melodic variation is a compelling new way to present the promise found in the treasured lyric. Set in minor, the melody expresses a depth of emotion that makes the anthem ideal for communion or moments of reflection and repentance. The surprising turn of the theme to major mode paints a powerful sonic picture of salvation and assurance.
