In a short space of time the work seemed to take over and move further away the original stimulus with the character andinteractive roles of the soloist and ensemble were suggested by the wintry evocative atmosphere of the poem.The piece opens with declamatory cadenza-like passages in the clarinet that are in turn commented on by theensemble. A more playful section where the clarinet line is very virtuosic leads to a long gently-unfolding melody in the ensemble that begins in the depths of the bass register and gradually gets much higher. Virtuosicclarinet lines interject against the accompaniment and both pursue their own course until culminating in a high impassioned melody for the clarinet coloured by fast-moving passage work in the higher registers of ensemble. Themovement ends with the ‘call and response’ lines of its opening.The second movement opens with an extended solo for the clarinet in its haunting chalumeau register. With each rising phrase the clarinet line gets higheruntil the ensemble enters in unison. The movement becomes much faster and energetic from this point with brisk fleeting lines for soloist and ensemble.The third movement is the most reflective of the three. It opens witha flute solo leading to the solo clarinet line and makes much of the poignant singing style which is so characteristic of the instrument. clarinet part in B flat-Along with Robert Schumann?s identically titled op. 73 the Fantasiestücke of 1864 by the Danish composer Niels Wilhelm Gade are an essential part of the repertoire of all clarinettists. Gade lived in Leipzig for a long time andhad been among Schumann?s close friends. With this deeply romantic composition he made an important contribution to establishing the clarinet as a chamber-music soloist. The four pieces in this collection can of course beperformed separately and are ideal teaching material. Our editor the clarinettist Nicolai Pfeffer has drawn upon the German and Danish first editions and the autograph in Copenhagen as sources and consequently has been able toeliminate several discrepancies found in older editions.

pour Clarinette et Orchestre ou Piano-Jeanine Rueff (1922-1999) was a French composer and music educator. Her Concertino for Clarinet and orchestral or Piano accompaniment was first published in 1950 and remains a popular alternative piece in the advanced clarinetist's performance repertoire. Rueff wrote extensively for the Saxophone and Clarinet and her compositions are often used as required contest solos. Concertino is fast and contains complex rhythms. Other appealing musical features include chromaticism triplet motifs and the exploitation of the entire range of the Clarinet. Rueff's Concertino provides a challengingyet riveting piece for advanced clarinetists.

André Messager (1853-1929) composed Solo De Concours for Clarinet in 1899 as a Paris Conservatoire Contest piece. Composed in three sections the cheerful first part contains triplet figures by the Clarinet that can easily be heard over the Orchestra. The second part has a strong French melody that can be heard as an exchange between the Clarinet and the Orchestra. A cadenza followed by trills ends this section and leads to the final part where the Clarinet stands out from the Orchestra with a rich melodic energy. André Messager is a previous student of Gabriel Fauré and CamilleSaint-Saëns who wrote numerous operas operettas and ballets. He was later appointed Commander of the Legion d’Honneur.

This Sonata written by a young Mendelssohn is genuine chamber music: the Clarinet and Piano are both used equally as a melody and an accompaniment instrument. The various playing characteristics of the Clarinet are not fully exploited; instead Mendelssohn focuses more on the cantabile character of the instrument.

Edward Gregson completed Tributes in the summer of 2010. Lasting some 16 minutes, there are five pieces in the set, each dedicated to a different composer and a different clarinettist (with whom Gregson had long musical associations). Each of the dedicatee composers wrote wonderfully for the Clarinet and, as a tribute to them, Gregson tried to invade, indeed imitate, their stylistic worlds in these pieces. They are as follows: To Francis Poulenc (for Emma Johnson) - a rather dreamy toccata, lyrical in feel, but interrupted by typically quirky and disruptive rhythmic episodes. To Gerald Finzi (for John Bradbury) - slow and lyrical with long melodic arches. To Igor Stravinsky (for Linda Merrick) - asymmetric rhythms dominate, with wide leaps in the solo line and bitonal harmony on the Piano. To Olivier Messiaen (for Nicholas Cox) - based on the ravishing slow movement for Cello in his Quartet for the End of Time, a seamless melody is woven around ever-changing repeated chords on the Piano.
