The Richard Wagner Complete Edition presents the composer's entire output for the first time in a reliable form. The conductor Michael Balling, in the early years of the 20th century, attempted to make Wagner's work more accessible for research and performance, but the edition only reached 10 volumes - some with grave shortcomings - and was discontinued after Balling's death in 1925. A further attempt at a complete edition by Otto Strobel was abandoned at the preliminary stages.This third attempt at a complete edition will be the first scholarly, critical edition, based on an evaluation of all the accessible source materials and the latest findings of serious Wagner research. As the edition is also intended for practical performance, the musical text has been kept free of philological insertions - these are listed in the appendices of each volume in the Critical Commentary. Numerous, partly unpublished works - some relatively unknown - and variant versions are published here for the first time. The edition presents authentic texts for Wagner specialists and researchers and critically based performing materials. Contrary to widely held opinions, even the well-known works of Wagner are not necessarily available in reliable editions. The genesis, history and performances directed by Wagner himself are extensively documented so as to present as complete an image as possible of Wagner's compositional intentions. / Conducteur

Textes de Charles Baudelaire (in Les Fleurs du mal)
A une époque où foisonnent de nombreuses et pourtant si diverses esthétiques musicales, aucune direction ne semble réellement s'imposer. Si l'on associe au XXème siècle une période de bouleversements idéologiques, on l'associe également avec des phénomènes de ruptures. Pourtant, Henri Dutilleux, traverse ce siècle avec une grande sérénité. Sans jamais dévier du chemin unique qu'il se trace, il enchaîne les compositions à la fois sublimes et personnelles...
Ses univers poétiques - dont je me sens très proche - se renouvellent sans cesse : nocturnes (La Nuit Etoilée, Ainsi la Nuit, l'Arbre des Songes...), rituels (Incantatoire et Obsessionnel dans ses Métaboles), ou encore son travail sur la lumière (ses magnifiques Shadows of Time). Sa conception coloriste de l'harmonie et la liberté avec il l'emploie, son orchestre foisonnant, ces nappes vibrantes, ce travail si riche sur le timbre et l'espace ou encore ce lyrisme intense mais toujours contenu, participent à l'élaboration d'un langage profondément personnel et prégnant qui traverse l'intégralité de son oeuvre.
La vraie leçon de Dutilleux pour les jeunes compositeurs, c'est - comme Debussy avant lui, ou Thierry Escaich aujourd'hui - la singularité. Ce qui me fascine littéralement chez Henri Dutilleux, c'est la façon dont il s'approprie un héritage musical fort, à la fois par sa sensibilité et au moyen d'un artisanat méticuleux. Et si Dutilleux est un compositeur singulier, il s'agit d'une singularité intemporelle.
Lui rendre hommage est à la fois un honneur, un plaisir immense, mais également l'occasion de rendre hommage à la voie qu'il a ouverte et à l'exemple qu'il représente pour nous aujourd'hui - hommage que je suis ravie de partager avec quatre autres compositeurs.
C'est tout naturellement que je me suis tournée vers la littérature de Charles Baudelaire, correspondant à la fois mon univers et à celui onirique d'Henri Dutilleux.
Mes sonnets sont écrits pour quintette (soprano, flûte alto, cor anglais, basson et piano). La formation instrumentale imposant la famille des bois m'a orientée vers la nature avec La Géante. La Cloche fêlée m'inspirait par son sens et Le Flambeau vivant par son caractère incantatoire.
Les sonnets expriment des visions différentes : la première plutôt fantastique - celle d'une géante magnifique dans la Nature ; la seconde mystique et processionnelle ; et enfin, le spleen intérieur par la métaphore d'une cloche ébréchée. Cependant, je les ai conçus de la même manière : tous trois travaillent ainsi le phénomène de nappes sonores vibrantes et entêtantes. Cela confère à l'ensemble son côté hypnotique, sensation intense que je retrouve à la lecture des sonnets baudelairiens, comme à celle de la musique de Dutilleux.

The unbroken popularity of Vanhal's sole double bass concerto in competitions and for practice and concert purposes is reason enough for us to publish the work in Breitkopf Urtext. The new edition profits from Tobias Glöckler's experience of many years. As with the other great double-bass concertos of the classical Viennese repertoire (Dittersdorf, Hoffmeister), Glöckler arrives at convincing solutions. He began by filtering out a solid musical text from the source (which was not always free of contradictions) that was supplied with many additions. The disposition of the solo part required detailed knowledge of performance practice, since the work was written in the historical Viennese double bass tuning, and a few passages cannot be played without difficulty on a modern instrument. As with Dittersdorf and Hoffmeister, the piano reduction makes it possible to use three different double-bass tunings (solo, orchestral and Viennese).
