This 4-movement suite is based on authentic folktunes from the beautiful southern province in France: the 'Provence'. The composer used an harmonic language respecting the popular characteristics but on the other hand also contains some 'spicy' notes (... just like the wellknown 'Provençal sauce'! ...). The instrumentation is very colourful paying a lot of attention to the different timbres of both brass and wood winds as well as to the percussion section.Every movement has its own character: 'Un Ange a fa la crido' (= An angel brought the creed / credo) is like a bourrée 'Adam e sa Coumpagnou' (= Adam and his companion) is an old love song 'Lou Fustié' (= the carpenter)a fast dance and finally 'Lis Escoubo' (= a whistle tune / popular ballad) is a farandole. In the latter the old tradition of folk musicians who play a whistle with one hand and a drum with the other hand is clearly represented during the first presentations of the one and only theme)Although this piece is not too demanding a well balanced band is necessary to perform it successfully. Thanks to the contrasts and the varying colours it keeps on holding the attention.

Dreaming of love. This is the theme of the folksong on which the composition was based. Its characteristic melody inspired Jacob de Haan to this instrumental romance with a transparent structure consisting of an introduction the folk-melody a development of the theme the folk-melody accompanied by ornamental triplets followed by the final bars.

Ce th?me a clairement un caract?re plus legato et est par cons?quent plus m?lodieux.Le climax de l??uvre commence dans les cuivres graves avec leur th?me marcato ?labor? avec une grande rythmique dans l?accompagnement les clusters etc. et va vers un solo de percussions avec des orchestrations en 5/8 avec de nombreux mouvements parall?les dans les accords (style de la musique folk).Vers la fin le deuxi?me th?me revient ? deux reprises : une fois comme il a d?j? ?t? entendu avec plus de contre-m?lodie et de mod?le d?accompagnement ensuite sous une forme canonique dans laquelle trois groupes jouent le th?me dans un m?lange harmonieux. La fin est une r?p?tition de la partie centrale en 5/8.J?ai essay? d?exploiter bon nombre des couleurs d?un orchestre philharmonique en faisant jouer les cuivres et les bois seuls et en utilisant de nombreuses sourdines. De plus les percussions jouent un r?le de premier plan dans l?ensemble de l??uvre.
