Instrument : organ Nombre de Pages : 62 This School of Organ Playing presupposes a certain technical facility on the piano. The pedal exercises at the beginning are rudimentary and should be practiced in all keys, gradually accelerating the tempo. The studies are graded according to their polyphony, beginning with simple two part exercises, followed by those in three and more parts. This acquaintance with the strict principles of polyphonic music, and the introduction to effective part writing, with a knowledge of harmonic form and architectonic values, provide the essential background for the correct performance of polyphonic music, especialle the fugue. The most important musical forms have been used to illustrate the various possibilites of registration and its relationship to style (colourful, individualistic and smooth playing). The studies are so arranged that earlier technical points, etc. are constantly reviewed, through comparison of style and form, in order to fix, or refreshen, the ideas in the student's mind. It is very important that the evolution of organ music from vocal music should be made clear to the student the very beginning, both musically and intellectually. He will be shown the technical evolution of organ music during the centuries and thus prepared for an artistic execution and interpretation of old and new words, especially for the incomparable art of our great Johann Sebastian Bach. In this comprehensive guide the technique of Organ pedalling is broken down into thirty seven chapters each of which introduces a different aspect of pedalling technique with clear explanations and colour photographs. Orgelbogen - 17 Preludes and Chorale Fantasies (1955- 2014) by Per Nørgård. Edited by Ivan Hansen. A review in the July/August issue of Choir and Organ magazine stated that Orgelbogen is comprised of 'rigorous works in and uncompromising idiom by a major figure far removed from the world of the Anglican organ loft and choir stalls' concluding that '[a]nyone with an interest in contemporary composition for organ should investigate this - it's a beacon of clear-minded compositional integrity. A review in the May-July 2016 edition of 'The Organ' Magazine states that 'the inherentquality' of this publication makes it 'very strongly recommended to organists of all ages and technical accomplishment.'

Cradle Song-Vuggesang / Cradle Song for Organ solo by Peter Bruun (2016). The piece is based on Martin Luther's hymn 'Vom Himmel Hoch'. Dedicated to Vibeke Vanggaard. 'Peter Bruun's cradle song Vuggesang is an inventive and refreshingly unconventional set of variations on 'Vom Himmel Hoch'. There are some fascinating textures here and the whole thing is a far cry from a dutiful neo-classical perusal of stock partita motifs - the crystalline final variation which disappears into nothing in the final bars is especially striking. Numerous rhythmic complexities throughout the score will need thought but the piece will reward thediligent.' - Stephen Farr Choir & Organ Magazine 'Organ music makes up only a small part of Danish composer Peter Bruun’s (b. 1968) varied output. Nonetheless  Vuggesang (‘Cradle Song’) from 2016 is idiomatically and sympathetically written for the organ: a series of five variations on Luther’s hymn Vom Himmel hoch that affords variety of texture colour and mood. A clear head is needed to negotiate some of the rhythmic complexities but this is a fine work for the Christmas season that will reward performer and listener.' - Sunday by Sunday Â

Par GRAY ALAN. The four organ sonatas of Alan Gray (1855-1935) stand as one of the largest contributions to the sonata repertoire by an English composer. Published around 1890, they also mark an advancement in the repertoire of potential concert works. Gray had not studied abroad and his sonatas demonstrate a compelling emergence of a distinctly English style of organ sonata after almost half a century of continental influence. All four sonatas show a strong command of not only writing for the instrument but also the art of registration. Gray?s indications are clear, logical, and practical. He writes for a symphonic organ of at least three manuals but many of the pieces could be played on an instrument of only two manuals. The use of contrasting manual colours between phrases and the incorporation of solo stops is notable for conveying Gray?s views on interpretation and his strong understanding of the instrument. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Recueil / Orgue

Thomas Hewitt Jones' Carnival. Composed 2010. Written for Martin Neary President of the Organists Charitable Trust. These five short works are all extracted from the excellent Little Organ Book from the Organists Charitable Trust edited by Martin Neary and first published by Novello in 2010. This is a wonderful resource of 11 mainly new works by British composers all of moderate difficulty and well-defined character. Iain Farrington’s Bluesday is full of delicious harmonies with a bold climax framed by a gentle beginning and ending. David Bednall’s Fanfare is a joyful work that would bea good recital opener or festival voluntary with a chance to unleash the big reeds. The simplicity of the title of Howells’s Cradle Song belies a richness and warmth that make this a moving miniature. John Rutter’s evening prelude from 1979 on the plainsong hymn Te lucis ante terminum is tender and clear with some surprisingly plangent harmonies. Thomas Hewitt Jones’s Carnival is an outburst of festivity and bravura. All these pieces are very much worth playing though organists interested in more than two of them would be better served purchasing a copy of the original anthology which is still very well priced (Little Organ Book Novello 9781849386814 £9.95). - Sunday by Sunday

JS Bach’s Choral prelude for Organ Wachet Auf has become a favourite of wedding couples for processional or recessional music because of its joyous liveliness and beauty. The cantata Wachet Auf BWV 140 contains a Biblical warning to be alert for the arrival of salvation but Bach seems to have chosen to wake his sleepers with delightful sounds. The arranger Charles Macpherson was an Organist at St Paul’s Cathedral in London and a professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music. He has made his interpolations clear by the use of brackets.

?For me Sebastian Bach is the be-all and end-all of music; true progress lies and resides in him alone.? It was with these programmatic words that Max Reger prefaced his answer to a survey ?What does Johann SebastianBach mean to me and what is his significance for our time?? posed by the editors of a magazine in 1905. Reger had already proven his adoration of Bach with his magnificent homage to the composer written and publishedin 1900 and probably the best-known of his works for Organ. It is an established work in the concert repertoire of well-known virtuosi but is also increasingly being performed by ambitious church musicians. Henle has nowpublished this sea of notes and performance directions in an edition with a particularly clear and readable text.

The Prelude (Vorspiel) dates from either 1846 or 1852 the Fugue from 1861 and the Postlude from 1846. These three works show the young Bruchner and give us a clear insite into his serious character. Also included in this volume is the Prelude in C major (Preludium) written in 1884 which represents Bruchner at his most mature.

Transcription-Jean Guillou did not change a single note for this arrangement. He just distributed the different parts to the manuals and the pedal in a way that guarantees a clear and varied registration in harmony with the architecture of the work and the fingerings and pedallings of difficult passages. The registration only serves as a suggestion since the ways of using the instruments are as varied as the tastes and views of the artists.

(+)
All of Bach?s six authenticated motets were written between 1723 and 1727 for St Thomas? Church Leipzig where Bach was appointed as director of music in 1723. During this period Bach composed most of his cantatas and it seems likely that for ordinary Sunday services he used existing motets from the seventeenth century tradition reserving his own motet compositions for special occasions.Four of his six motets were written for the funeral services of prominent members of the St Thomas? congregation. Jesu Meine Freude (BWV 227) the longest most musically complex and earliest of the six was written in 1723 for the funeralof Johanna Maria Käsin the wife of Leipzig?s postmaster.Jesu Meine Freude BWV 227 is a beautifully constructed motet for five-part mixed choir by J.S. Bach. This Urtext edition provides you with a clear and accurate realisation of the composer?s original intentions and includes thoroughly detailed editorial markings and suggestions as edited by Konrad Ameln.Urtext of the New Bach EditionPerformance material and choral score (BA5132) available for saleComplete edition of the 6 Motets Vocal score with Piano reduction (BA5193-90) choral score (BA5193)

'Another Look at Harmony' is a project started in 1975. The approach has been to link directly rhythmic and harmonic structure. In doing so easily audible root movement (chords or 'changes') was chosen in order that the clarityof their relationship could easily be heard. Here as in earlier periods of Western music melodic material is for the most part a function or result of the harmony. However it is clear that some of the priorities of Westernmusic (harmony/melody first then rhythm) have been reversed.

Vol. 1-3-Collected preludes and minor pieces for organ volume 1-3. Edited by Birgitte Ebert and Bendt Viinholt Nielsen. The Rued Langgaard Edition Edition Wilhelm Hansen Copenhagen 2017. With the publication of Rued Langgaard’s preludes and minor pieces for organ in three volumes the contribution made by the composer to this repertoire is being presented in its entirety and all its diversity. The publishers have decided to include as many ofLanggaard’s small pieces for organ as it has been possible to present in an authentic form rather than to carry out a selection based on aesthetic or formalcriteria. The 112 compositions are presented in chronological order in accordance with Bendt ViinholtNielsen’s catalogue of works Rued Langgaard’s Compositions (1991). The intention to include as far as possible all the completed compositions in the edition has resulted inconsiderable editorial challenges. In certain cases Langgaard’s own handwritten manuscripts are so unclear or incomplete that the editors have had to abandon the possibility of arriving at a form of publication that lives up to the strict requirements made by the Rued Langgaard Edition regarding authenticity and a critical approach to the source material. Therefore the editors have made no attempt to include a number of mainly untitled and undated preludes which Langgaard left behind in so loose a notation that publication in anything approaching authentic form is not possible (these pieces are registered in the catalogue of works in the appendix of omitted works as U10-U20).
