The volume of trios for advanced players mainly offers a selection from works of the most prominent and most popular composers (Bach, Händel, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven). Par MURAIL TRISTAN. Songes, ombres et fumées : le titre est emprunté à un vers du Sonnet 123 de Pétrarque (l'un des sonnets qui ont inspiré à Liszt trois pièces de ses Années de Pélerinage). Ces mots figurent aussi dans La Vallée Close, sur des sonnets de Pétrarque, pour voix, clarinette et trio à cordes, écrite cette même année 2016. Il s'agit avant tout d'un travail sur la 'grande forme' - une vaste trajectoire, qui passe par de nombreux territoires, revient sur ses pas, anticipe... Allusions aux formes traditionnelles : adagio central, rondo final - mais tout s'entremêle, et les différentes textures et idées musicales luttent entre elles sans cesse. Sont refusés tous les petits expédients qui permettent d'esquiver la grande question - la question posée par une forme musicale aussi chargée d'histoire que le quatuor à cordes - sont donc évités tous ces sons écrasés, divers petits bruits, gloussements d'harmoniques, qui prolifèrent dans tant de quatuors contemporains. Evitée aussi la segmentation en une succession de mouvements courts, au profit de la continuité du discours. Le thème est, comme le suggère le titre, la mélancolie - une mélancolie profonde et persistante. Une idée fixe (battements réguliers de pizzicati) jalonne la partition, s'affronte aux autres éléments musicaux, finira par triompher. Au long de cette trajectoire jailliront des visions, des hallucinations, des phases de dépression et d'excitation, de renoncement, d'espoir, de colère, de révolte... To what God shall we chant our songs of battle? was commissioned by James O’Donnell and Westminster Abbey for a service of solemn commemoration on 4 August 2014 marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.Stark and gritty yet always rooted in tonality Matthews’s expressive harmonies bring a potent immediacy to the bitter disillusioned words of war poet Harold Monro and the two lyrical solos for soprano and tenor which set passages from the Book of Lamentations and St Luke’s Gospel. Beginning with a violent and impassioned energy this anthem ultimately offers little consolation. In the words of James O’Donnell it ‘leaves you standing on theedge of an abyss’ its impetus petering out in a series of hushed troubled questions.

La durée de vie de Josef Suk (1874-1935), le célèbre compositeur et violoniste professionnel, a été fortement influencé par son appartenance à la célèbre 'Quatuor tchèque' (fondée en 1892). Suk faisait partie du quatuor jusqu'en 1933, se produisant dans près de quatre mille concerts.Le Quatuor à cordes n o 1 en si bémol majeur op. 11 (1896) est la première composition aux côtés de l'op Serenade. 6, qui a été publié par Simrock à la suite de la médiation par Suk père-frère, Antonín Dvorák. Dvorák a examiné ce travail du jeune musicien à être 'le meilleur que je connaisse de lui.' Suk a réécrit le quatrième mouvement, vingt ans après son achèvement, parce qu'il n'était pas satisfait de la version originale. En dépit de son utilisation du même matériau thématique, la nouvelle version se distingue donc nettement que ce mouvement est souvent effectué sur lui-même.La principale source de la forme originale du quatuor était la deuxième édition de Simrock. Pour la version alternative de la Finale de la présente édition est basée sur une partition et les parties marquées avec des corrections Suk.- Avec une préface commentaires (Cz / Eng / Ger) et critique (Eng)- Comprend également la dernière version du quatrième mouvement de 1915 / 2 Violons, Alto Et Violoncelle

Kevin Volans' String Quartet No. 9: Shiva Dances was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 and first performed by the Smith Quartet at the 2004 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.Kevin Volans (the composer) notes on the piece:In the past I have been interested in trying to go beyond historicism (1970s) beyond style(1980s) and beyond form (1990s) in my work. Looking back over the music of the twentiethcentury I was struck by the fact the nearlyall of it is extremely 'busy' almost cluttered. Italmost seemed that composers felt compelled to look industrious. In the new millennium Ithought it would be interesting to try and eliminate content. I also aspired to movingfrommusic (sound as art) to art (art as sound). This of course has already been done by a numberof composers (many from New York Phil Niblock and La Monte Young to name but two) butit was something I had never tried.AlthoughI found it annoying that the label 'minimalist' was given to my African-based work and fearing this would make the label stick I set out to write a piece which reflected my loveof minimal painting and architecture. The Japanesehave a term 'wabi' meaning 'voluntarypoverty' or 'emptiness' to describe their restrained minimal aesthetic an aesthetic which however pays greatest attention to the quality of material and fine detail. I like to think thatthelack of excessive pitch material in this piece reflects a kind of voluntary poverty.When Shiva is portrayed dancing (as Nataraj) He is depicted in a circle of flames crushing asmall figure the ego underfoot.You get theimpression He dances on the spot not movingaround at all.
