The musical effect of Prarie Lullaby should be graceful and serene, evocative of a peaceful night on the open plains. To that end, players will need to strive for an unlabored rhythmic flow, smooth bowing and a clear, steady tone as close to p as possible. Beginning at m.39, the violin and viola parts are marked pizzicato. If young players are unable to return quickly to argo at m.53, they may make the bow preparation easier by taking a full measure rest at m.52. This option is marked in the parts and score. The divisi notes at m. 69 are provided for ensembles which lack violas. Ensembles with violas may have them play the lower notes while the second violins play the upper notes. Percussion, which is completely optional, should be very subdued. Choose a bell mallet which allows the tones to be heard just above the strings. the woodblock part is intended to imitate the clip-clop sound of a horse's hooves. Two different sizes of woodblocks or temple blocks are needed. Finding two suitable sounds on one woodblock is difficult. Again, the right mallets are very important. The suspended cymbal should be played with brushes if the string ensemble is small. If the suspended cymbal with brushes cannot be heard above a large number of strings, then sticks should be used instead. The percussion part can be performed by one player, provided the instruments and mallets are set up properly and the player has the skill to make the transitions smoothly. Note the optional rest at mm. 53-54. Performance time with the repeat is two and a half minutes. The musical effect ofA Prarie LullabyA should be graceful and serene, evocative of a peaceful night on the open plains. Tchaikovsky spent the summer and autumn of 1880 at his sisterÂs country estate in KamÂianka, Ukraine, where he sought peace and relaxation. But after a short time the desire to work took hold of him again. âI'm sketching a symphony or string quintet just now; I don't know where it's going yet,â he wrote to his friend and patroness Nadezhda von Meck. In the end it turned out to be a Serenade for String Orchestra, which numbers among his most beautiful inspirations and is today a central work in the genre. The four movements captivate with their diverse moods â be it the Mozartian first movement âin the form of a sonatinaâ, the elegant Waltz, the melancholy âElegiaâ or the rousing Finale. For this new source-critical edition it was possible to consult the autograph in Moscow as well as the early printed editions into which Tchaikovsky sometimes entered a number of minor revisions. Chamber Suite, for string orchestra, is an adaptation of Mason’s 2nd String Quartet. The addition of the double bass adds more harmonic richness in all the movements and is particularly apparent in the lush 2nd movement. Chamber Suite offers string orchestras rhythmic and technical challenges but with a very accessible language. This is music that appeals to wide range of audiences with its energy and unique, coherent musical language of its own. It keeps the listener’s interest right to the end. The 1st movement engages from the opening bar with fast paced, off kilter 7/8 tutti rhythms and sharp-edged harmonies. This is a kind of musical caffeine living between tonal and polytonalism with rich, sliding chords and a haunting middle section reminiscent of Armenian folks tunes. The 2nd movement offers emotional storytelling with clear tonality but with moments of more complex stacked harmonies and tension. The 3rd movement is lively with raw energy. Voices are rapidly interchanged in a dance of weaving motivic development until the satisfying rush of notes to the end.string orchestra Duration: 15' Composed: 2020 Published by: Todd Mason Performance materials available on rental:.

Using just 6 notes, Arco Echo explores G major in first position using only easy quarter- and half-note rhythms. A smooth detaché call-and-response between upper and lower string sections will help young students learn to listen across the ensemble, building confidence in simple three-part harmony with doubled Violin 2/Viola and doubled Cello/Bass. Optional piano is included for additional support, making this a fun first venture into independent counting.Arco Echo is a lighthearted piece for beginning string orchestra. It falls within the range of the first-year player. Young musicians can work on basic detaché bowing skills with a nice mix of half- and quarter-note rhythms, including some rests and minimal dynamic changes. All of the sections get a chance to play parts of the melody with an echo game of call-and-response between upper and lower string sections. The harmonies are very clear and direct, resulting in a solid concert selection that will give the young orchestra a big, confident sound.

Einar Englund's (1916-1999) musical language is, in his own words, based on sweeping terms and great symphonic lines. He built his works on themes, clear harmonies and polyphonic thinking. As a composer he was a neo-classicist, whose music based on tonality and included long, compact and even romantic melodic lines side by side with spicy dissonances, energetic rhythm and vigorous orchestration. Serenata for string orchestra (1983) is divided in four movements, including a nostalgic menuetto and an energetic and airy Finale with Bartok-like turns. The overall duration is 20 minutes.
