Par PART ARVO. ‘I went to nursery school every day until the end of secondary school!’ Arvo Pärt says and pauses, staring slyly at his listener. ‘My mother worked at a nursery school in Rakvere, and I always went to visit her after my lessons.’ There, the future composer often sat at the piano and played or improvised for his little friends. Arvo Pärt is a composer best known for his 'tintinnabuli' compositions. It is a lesser-known fact that in his earlier years as a composer, he also wrote children's songs and piano pieces along with music for plays and animated films. This volume, 'Songs from Childhood', contains a selection of Arvo Pärt's music for children from the period 1956-1970. In those years he was involved with several children's studios and theatres as the piano accompanist and composer. Most of his music for children came about by way of improvisation in rehearsals and was only later completed and put on paper. These pieces therefore retain all the spontaneity and playful spirit in which they were created. 'Songs from Childhood' includes a CD of the same name, providing recordings of the songs with new and colourful instrumental accompaniments in the roiginal Estonian language for your enjoyment. Mozart Requiem (K.626) (Ostrzyga completion) (Vocal Score) This publication offers a source-critical edition of Mozart’s fragmentary “Requiem” as well as an alternative to the traditional Süssmayr version. It makes it possible to perform 1) the fragment, identified in print in both the score and the parts, 2) the authentic sections left incomplete by Mozart, now in a stylistically appropriate orchestration, and 3) those sections missing entirely in the fragment, newly added in Mozart’s idiom taking into account historical additions by Süssmayr and Eybler. When completing the fragment, the editor drew on comprehensive comparative and analytical studies of Mozart’s church style and compositional workmanship. The influence of Handel and Bach manifested in his final years, particularly in the “Requiem” fragment, is taken into account in those sections requiring completion or fresh composition. At two points readers may choose between alternative movements (or sections), since proceeding from Süssmayr’s historical version, two divergent options cannot be weighed against each other but each one may well reflect Mozart’s intentions: the “Lacrimosa” may end with or without “Amen” fugue, and the “Sanctus” may begin in the customary D major or in D minor. Kammeroper Nr. 2. Par RIHM WOLFGANG. Chamber opera does not mean “little opera.” On the same scale as chamber music is to the symphony, it is rather the other way of talking onstage. The movable apparatus permits sophisticated voice-leading. A large ensemble demands simple conception to achieve the complexity it perhaps intends; this can be formulated more sharply and nuanced in a chamber ensemble. Therefore it is the subject which this type of presentation must sustain – or, better, provoke. Büchner’s Lenz is a description of the conditions within a process of collapse, moments of destruction already occurred but not yet accepted, evident in the points of contact with the environment. And it was those points of contact which Michael Fröhling attempted to reconstruct onstage. Lenz’s distraught state is always the same; only the proximity of the environment to that distraught state grows and ebbs. The musical consequence An hour of extreme chamber music results from this description: always bound for the main character – actually, not a commentary, but the main character himself as a multilayered level of action. Although Lenz acts on many levels – or tries to or believes he is – he has no room to manoeuvre. That is why he is also tightly interwoven in his sonic surroundings; the voices which only he hears are just as much himself as the two men with whom he foregathers (the liberal pragmatist Oberlin and the alert merchant who always “does the right thing” in every situation) – they evoke responses which he deeply desires. Omnipresent Friederike is just as much his inner world as Nature is – Nature, which he can no longer perceive unless it is personified, enlivened or dead. Therefore, the music’s task is both to motivate the “situation” (atmospherically) and to be the psychological constant (via a network of entangled references per se) in an action as it is played out. The compositional process December 1977 to June 1978 – a period identical to the stepwise understanding of an existence as that of Jakob Lenz. Yet the more the historical figure became precisely attendant in my intellect in terms of data and atmosphere, the more it retreated in favour of a cipher of disturbance as I began to understand Lenz. Thence the explanation for the failure of the attempts to approach him – including my attempt to interpret him via musical representation – because, essentially, Lenz himself is the failure. Only the naked stages of that failure remain portrayable, i.e. including the failure of those who wish to “help” Lenz, for example, while Lenz himself is already trapped inextricably in a state of complete destruction. I tried to compose my way into that situation as far as possible; the insistence of several rhythmic and harmonic configurations is the palpable expression of the main character’s ever-recurring rigidity. One sound pervades the entire work. The musical stage For me, this is a place where very magical and very human things take place. In Jakob Lenz, the human aspects often switch to magical ones, since the realism of a self-suasive, unhinged soul takes on surreal traits – or we simply cannot understand that otherwise except as not being real. A character like Jakob Lenz on the stage is complex due to the fact alone that it harbours many stages within itself, and music must represent those constantly present stages. I have tried to do so in the most direct way – by not cleanly separating the musical layers, but keeping them constantly in evidence until they must break forth, each in accord with its own dramaturgy. In an overview, the large form takes on aspects of a rondo, performed in overlapping layers – a type of rondo relief, since perspectives of psychological proximity and distance are indeed formulated musically as atmospheric relations. Par PESSON GERARD. Berlioz n'a pas aimé Rome, ni la villa Médicis, où il était parti à contre-coeur. Il trouvait la ville étouffante et provinciale, la Villa étriquée académique et trop seigneuriale. Il est donc allé chercher ailleurs ce qu'il a appelé son 'Italie sauvage', une Italie de ciels, de vents, de pluies, de ruines ensauvagées, de montagnes, de bourgades à flanc de roches. En romantique qui vit des éléments, il n'emportait dans ses nombreuses virées à Tivoli, Subiaco ou aux Castelli Romani, qu'un carnet, un fusil et sa guitare, dormant parfois à la belle étoile, cherchant parfois la compagnie des petites gens, se faisant l'ami de quelques bandits au grand coeur, mais plus souvent épris de solitude. Il y a eu effet-retard de l'Italie dans l'oeuvre de Berlioz. Le temps de développer, par une archéologie rétrospective, les impressions assimilées, et, pour une grande part, de réinventer un pays, certes vécu mais tout autant fantasmé. Ce pays-là, qui n'est donc d'aucun pays, deviendra la dorsale de beaucoup de ses oeuvres: Benvenuto Cellini, Béatrice et Bénédict, Roméo et Juliette, Carnaval Romain etc., et surtout Harold en Italie. Harold reprend la manière autobiographique qui faisait, entre autres, l'originalité de la Symphonie Fantastique. Utilisant le héros byronien, Childe Harold, Berlioz livre en musique un scénario qui commande le cadrage panoramique. On peut parler d'une réappropriation par un héros prête-nom de ses propres sensations relevées sur le motif (processus du plein air à l'atelier qu'effectuaient aussi les peintres, ses collègues de séjour en Italie). C'est cette dualité paysage réel/paysage rêvé que veut traiter la partition Panorama, particolari e licenza ('Panorama, détails et licence') écrite à la demande de Christophe Desjardins. De la même manière que j'ai utilisé parfois des musiques préexistantes pour chercher ma propre musique (Nebenstück/Brahms/filtrage, Wunderblock/Bruckner/effacement), j'ai voulu ici détailler la notion de champ que Berlioz manie de façon véritablement pré-cinématographique. Ce qui se rapproche de nous (un détail infime perdu dans le tutti), ce qui s'en éloigne, ce qui nous parvient encore - un travelling qui devient arrêt sur image, un cadrage resserré, le fondu de deux perspectives. Panorama, particolari e licenza est, en ce sens, une sorte de making of , comme on dit aujourd'hui, de ce modèle génial, partition hirsute, fruste, mais tout à la fois riche, hautement inspirée. Harold en Italie traduit cette sauvagerie que Berlioz voulait rendre en musique, combinat de sensations, de révolte et d'exaltation: un son capté puis stylisé, avec effets de réel devenant sous sa plume des trouvailles, de véritables effets spéciaux dont peu de musiciens avant lui avaient eu l'intuition. A la demande de David Jisse et de la Muse en circuit, j'ai ajouté une partie électronique qui a été conçue par Laurent Sellier. Cette partie, essentielle, est une manière de réaliser concrètement ce qui est en filigrane dans Harold, la transmutation de toute expérience éprouvée en un véritable clavier de sensations. Le percussionniste de Panorama, particolari e licenza est une sorte d'accessoiriste bruiteur. Il reformule concrètement le réel purement rêvé, mais d'une manière que j'ai voulue parfois dérisoire et délibérément 'bricolée', comme un travail magique qui puisse donner sens à cette vérité véhémente, incessamment recyclée, qui faisait tout l'art de Berlioz. La question du soliste est importante dans Panorama, particolari e licenza. Il est tout à la fois le point de vue, la subjection, celui qui dit je, comme il est aussi le sujet de l'autofiction. Tout en étant central, il est égaré, parfois noyé dans le méta-instrument du récit. Au moins c'est ainsi que je l'ai traité, car il maille les instruments ensemble, prenant toutes les bribes du discours, abdiquant souvent ce qu'il y a de performatif dans la place du soliste romantique. Il est ici doublé par une voix d'alto de manière à rendre ce fading du sujet, ainsi que cette prise de parole par le texte poétique toujours central dans l'oeuvre de Berlioz. J'ai expliqué les deux premiers mots du titre. Le dernier renvoie aux licences que je prends par rapport au modèle, mais aussi à cette forme musicale du XVIIIe - La Licenza - qui était une manière d'hommage à un personnage d'influence. Con licenza était aussi une façon d'indiquer une liberté dans l'interprétation (c'est bien ici le sujet: la transcription est un écart), le tempo ou dans l'ornementation. Con alcune licenze écrit Beethoven au début de la fugue de l'opus 106. Panorama, particolari e licenza suit assez fidèlement, quant au déroulement du moins, trois mouvements d'Harold en Italie. I - Aux montagnes: On y entend des bruits de vent, de ruisseaux, des sons de guitare et de harpe de voyage. Des bribes non linéaires du Childe Harold de Byron. II - Marche (moissonneurs et angélus): Il s'agit de pèlerins dans l'original. Toutefois, Berlioz a été précis sur le souvenir qui a déclenché ce tableau dans sa musique. Ce sont des moissonneurs qui rentrent le soir au village en chantant une prière. J'ai choisi ici l'angélus, qui est devenu une véritable icône dans la peinture de ce siècle-là. On y entend donc des fragments chantés en latin. Le percussionniste joue de la faux. Car la mort n'est jamais loin dans l'imaginaire byronien et non moins berliozien. C'est aussi une référence à d'autres 'scènes aux champs' passées dans l'imaginaire collectif. Je ne peux cacher que moissonneur m'a soufflé aussi moins sonneur. III - Sérénade (une chanson des Abruzzes): C'est le mouvement le plus 'stylisé'. On y entend une véritable chanson en dialecte des Abruzzes où est évoqué la fameuse lontananza: à la fois espace résonnant d'une montagne à l'autre, mais aussi éloignement, séparation de deux amants. C'est un chant sur la construction du futur et la désillusion amoureuse que Berlioz a pu entendre et dont il a pu méditer le poème, bien qu'il ne s'en soit pas musicalement inspiré. Mais l'esprit, qui combine la mélancolie, un rien de malice, d'inquiétude et de doute tout berlioziens, est gardé dans ce mouvement, jusque dans les paroles de la chanson: O hirondelle qui vole sur Potenza Salue-le pour moi, c'est mon espoir Demande-lui ce qu'il fait, ce qu'il pense, Comme il supporte la lontananza Demande-lui ce qu'il fait, ce qu'il veut Et comme il supporte la séparation. In 1774 Gluck had committed himself to supplying six stage works to the Académie Royale de Musique in Paris. This job he fulfilled partially by reworking works which had already been premiered in Vienna, such as 'Orfeo ed Euridice? (BA 5845-90).In the case of 'Alceste? which was premiered in 1776 and which was the prototype of the so-called reform opera, the composer created a completely new version. The libretto was translated from the former Italian into French and was altered at the same time, but also the music was fundamentally changed: Gluck newly composed the recitatives and rearranged, enlarged or cut scenes. The initial rejection of the work by the audience caused him to further alter the third act, for example by adding the character of Hercules as Alceste's saviour.
