Par MACMILLAN JAMES. A setting of passages from the Book of Revelation, with particular reference to the angels who appear with seven trumpet blasts, heralding a series of apocalyptic scenes. Commissioned by Jeffrey Skidmore, director of Ex Cathedra, and first performed by them at Birmingham Town Hall in 2015. The composer states, ?There is a vividness and strangeness in these dramatic texts, which are endlessly fascinating and disturbing. The instruments used here are based on the various instrumental types mentioned throughout scripture ? trumpets, harp, bells, cymbals, tabor, rebec.? These are scored for mostly in their modern forms, but shofars (Jewish ritual temple trumpets) and early trumpets are also used. The choral writing shows a similar contrast between traditional and contemporary scoring, with polyphony and homophony alongside extended vocal techniques, including Sprechstimme. Leading choral director Paul Spicer comments, ?This is an extremely dramatic work which draws the listener into the apocalyptic story line ? L\'histoire de Peter Pan - surtout connue à travers la lecture simplificatrice du dessin animé de Walt Disney - se révèle, dans le conte originel de James Matthew Barrie, une étonnante parabole sur l\'existence et sur la mort. L\'opéra renforce la mise en abîme et le jeu sur l\'éternel retour en mettant en scène la perte prématurée du frère de Wendy qui n\'est autre que Peter, rejoint par elle dans l\'au-delà : le Neverland. Trois mondes alternent sur la scène, selon des techniques assez cinématographiques (flash-backs, fondus, transitions abruptes). Le premier, l\'axe central, met en présence deux actrices : Wendy, aujourd\'hui grand-mère, raconte son histoire à sa petite fille Lucie, avec toutes les déformations et contradictions dues peut-être moins à son âge qu\'à sa mythomanie. Les deuxième et troisième mondes sont l\'illustration de son propos, les images vivantes de son souvenir : la chambre de son enfance, où les voix sont parlées mais cette fois-ci calées rythmiquement avec l\'orchestre, et le Pays imaginaire quant à lui entièrement chanté. La présence de la musique est donc proportionnelle à la distance prise avec le réel, puisque les actrices parlent (ici et maintenant), les solistes parlent sur l\'orchestre (le souvenir), solistes et choeurs chantent où tout n\'est plus que musique (le rêve... l\'Ailleurs !). Sirènes, fées, pirates, indiens, bêtes sauvages - disputes familiales, perte des enfants - nostalgie du regard sur son passé, etc. De la réflexion sur l\'enfance éternelle (seule la vie peut offrir le vieillissement) jusqu\'aux batailles les plus spectaculaires, puisse cet opéra - à l\'instar du conte de James Matthew Barrie - s\'ouvrir à tous les niveaux de lecture. Anna R. Matthews writes: 'Frederick Niven's poem tells the story of Christmas in 1914. On Christmas Day a truce was spontaneously enacted by the two sides fighting in Flanders in World War One. This was five months into the war which until this point many in Britain had confidently believed would be over by that time. When the two sides lay down their weapons in the name of humanity and met in the middle of no-man's-land they would not have realised the bloodshed that was to come as the war dragged on for a further four years - a conflict so atrocious that it came to be known as 'the war to end all wars'.This carol conveys the unknowing innocence of thosemen and the joy of Christmas yet explores the sinister context in which they met and the future which was to come. Ultimately the events of the 1914 Christmas truce came to symbolise the universality of hope and peace at Christmas. This carol brings this message into the twenty-first century.' Anna R. Matthews is a composer living in Exeter England. Born in Devon Anna studied music at Durham University where she was awarded the Rosalind Dickinson Prize. She enjoys working with some of today's most talented and creative ensembles: from Psappha to EXAUDI and from cathedral choirs to youth ensembles. Her music has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and she has been a featured new music composer in Choir & Organ magazine. Anna was a finalist in the 2011 King James Bible Composition Awards and is a 2013/24 Arts Council England fellow on the Clore Leadership Programme. She is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Par PART ARVO. On 4 July 2011 Arvo Pärt performed his “Vater unser” (“Our Father”) for Pope Benedict XVI at a ceremony in the Vatican celebrating the 60th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. Pärt also presented the Pope with a copy of the manuscript, which is dedicated to him. To honour the anniversary, over 60 artists from around the world have been invited to contribute to a new exhibition of artworks. Amongst the artists are the composers Arvo Pärt, Ennio Morricone and James MacMillan. To commemorate this historical occasion, Universal Edition has released a new edition of Pärt’s “Vater unser”, see UE35300. It includes a CD recording of the composer performing the work together with the boy soprano Heldur Harry Põlda, who performed with Pärt at the Vatican.
