Symphony No. 3 (1972-1975) by Per NørgÃ¥rd. Per NørgÃ¥rd's third symphony commissioned by The Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra (conductor Herbert Blomstedt) was premiered in Copenhagen in 1976 and received wide attention. The work gives comprehensive expression to a new realm of musical experience which the composer began to explore toward the end of the 1960s. While the first period in NørgÃ¥rds production in the 1050s represents his personal interpretation of the Nordic music tradition – evidenced for example in his “Piano Sonata No. 2” (1957) and“Constellations” for chamber orchestra (1958) – and the second period in the 1960s saw him working with serial techniques musical collage and a new sound-palette - especially in the orchestral works “Iris” (196-67) and “Luna” (1967) – with “Voyage into the Golden Screen” (1968) NørgÃ¥rd arrived at a new compositional technique based on the use of a special form of a so-called “infinity series” a principle of musical motion to be applied to all kinds of scales (chromatic diatonic et cetera). It is characteristic that that NørgÃ¥rd in the 1970s chose to cultivate diatonic infinity series already evident in the mythological opera “Gilgamesh” (1971-72). Thus the Symphony No. 3 begun directly after the opera combines the infinity series major and minor scales the partial series of natural harmonics and “sub-harmonics” (NørgÃ¥rds terminology) with rhythmic patterns based on the Golden Section (the Golden Mean) in a nexus of synchronous yet disparate elements which serve the composers vision of musical coherence.. Based on the film by Ingmar Bergman, Sebastian Fagerlund’s Autumn Sonata follows Charlotte Andergast, a celebrated concert pianist, as she visits the country home of her adult daughter, Eva. Charlotte has not seen Eva for seven years, during which time Eva and her husband Viktor have lost their three-year-old son Erik. Eva’s sister, Helena (Charlotte’s daughter), had been held in an institution but now (unbeknownst to Charlotte) lives with Eva and Viktor. Charlotte brings with her her need for adulation, imagining the chorus as an admiring concert audience applauding her every decision. When the family members converge under one roof after years of separation, they begin to delve into the past and old wounds?despite their good intentions?are reopened. Autumn Sonata was commissioned by the Finnish National Opera and premiered in Helsinki on 8 September 2017 with the Finnish National Opera Orchestra and Chorus conducted by John Storgårds. “Sonatas and quartets aren’t my thing”. Armed with this self-knowledge composer Isabelle Aboulker placed singing at the heart of her creative activity and garnered huge success in a variety of genres such as oratorio (The Man who Staggered Through War 1997) comic opera (Monsieur de Balzac fait son théâtre 1999) children’s tales (Douce et Barbe Bleue 2002) and the theatrical adaptation of narrative works (Une fille qu’on appelle Boule de suif 2014). Isabelle Aboulker also devotes much attention to melody as can be seen in this collection presenting a few of her most enchantingsuccesses. Her prosodic clarity and focus on the power of words crystallises a musical legacy that stretches from Rameau to Poulenc. This anthology of melodies for voice and piano – most of which are written for all voices – is delightfully eclectic: the melancholy perfume of the Lettre d’amour sits beside the unnerving eeriness of the merchant of souls (Au marché de Saint-Paul) while the limpid music of the La Fontaine’s Fables contrasts with the fever that animates Je t’aime a passionate vocalise dedicated to Patritica Petibon. A subtle sensitive art that enchants all who lend an ear.
