Little is known about the genesis ofLobe den Herrn, meine SeeleBWV 143.A transcription from the 19th century was for a long time considered the only source; the musical text of theNew Bach Editionwas based on this material. Recently however a copy of the score from 1762 has become available. It offers a more reliable musical text, rendering a complete revision of the cantata necessary. On the basis of this new source, the work is presented here as part of theNew Bach Edition - Revisedin what is presumably its original form in C major with three trumpets. This orchestration is more typical of Bach's writing than the version for three horns in the surviving B-flat major version.- Revised Urtext edition of the Weimar Cantata- Based on theNew Bach Edition - Revised

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy completed his first oratorio - St. Paul , op. 36 - in 1836, at the age of twenty-seven.The first version, which was premiered on 22 May 1836, was then extensively revised by the composer. This second version, which at the same time served as the basis for the published version, was premiered as early as October that year in Birmingham . The acclaim with which the oratorio was received was exceptional. Within eighteen months of completing the score, Mendelssohn was able to list fifty performances of the work. Robert Schumann praised the work effusively and even Richard Wagner, who later denigrated Mendelssohn, was full of admiration. Today, St. Paul belongs to the core repertoire of sacred choral music. This Urtext edition of the oratorio, edited by the internationally-recognised Mendelssohn scholar Michael Cooper is based on all critical sources. As well as the principal version of the work, the score also includes for the first time numbers which were composed for the first version and subsequently removed. This gives not only an insight into the history of the composition of the work, but also, with the complete performing material, into the performance of the original version. The appendices (first version) which appear in the full score and vocal score are not contained in this choral score. The full score and vocal score include the German and English texts of the oratorio. The vocal score is by Mendelssohn.- Urtext edition, representing the latest musicological research- Vocal texts in German and English- Supplements the already existing material available to this work

This cantata for the First Sunday after Trinity, first performed in 1726, is one of the most musically attractive compositions composed by Bach during his time as cantor at St. Thomas Church, Leipzig. In its alternating scoring for oboes, recorders and strings, the opulently-structured opening chorus describes the gesture of the breaking of bread. The arias and recitatives for the two soloists, alto and tenor show Bach at the peak of his compositional powers. The two-part cantata concludes with a simple chorus.- Urtext edition based on theNew Bach Edition- Richly coloured scoring using recorders and oboes- Vocal score (Ger/Eng), foreword (Ger/Eng)

Separate edition from BA 5902, â??Geistliche Chor-Musicâ?? SWV 369-380, The six and seven-part motets, nos. 13-29:In 1648 Heinrich Schütz published a collection of 29 motets with five to seven parts titled â??Geistliche Chor-Musicâ? (Sacred Choir Music). Here, the term â??Chorâ? (choir) refers not only to a (large) vocal ensemble but, more generally, to a group of musicians, vocal or instrumental. As explained by Schütz in the foreword he published with the collection, all parts of the motets can be performed vocally and/or instrumentally.

Erschallet, ihr Lieder (BWV 172) is one of those early Bach cantatas which were often revived at Leipzig. The first performance of this work was given in Weimar 1714. Although only a few instrumental parts from this performance are extant, it may be assumed that at that time the cantata already had the form familiar to us from its first Leipzig revival. It was given in C major (church pitch, corresponding to D major in chamber pitch), and the first number was intended to be repeated at the end of the work.
