Composed by Marin Marais La Folia is a piece for Cello and Orchestra. Arranged by Paul Bazelaire this edition presents the scores for Cello and Piano and can be played by advanced players. This melodious composition is based on “The folies of Spain” in terms of theme and rhythms and the arrangement was created for the Paris Conservatoire contest. While the beginning of the piece is quite slow it has some faster parts that are more cheerful. Marin Marais (1656-1728) was a French composer and master of the Viol. He wrote many pieces for the Viol some trio pieces and some orchestras.

This new edition edited by John Pickard of the Elgar Society uses for the first time the composer's original sketches to piece together an authoritative and definitive arrangement for Cello and Piano. (+)
This work for cello and orchestra was commissioned by the Strathclyde Regional Council and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. It is the second of ten concerti to be written for principal players of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Thefirst performance was given in February 1989 by William Conway and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by the composer. If Davies's Cello Concerto has already evoked comparisons with Elgar's that is perhaps an indicationnot only of its wealth of solo melody (there is hardly a page where the cello is not singing or if not that then dancing) and of its predominantly slow tempos but also of its musical stature. This second Strathclyde concertois a virtuoso piece for the entire ensemble which is used almost throughout as a clutch of soloists rather than as a tutti block. The general tone is one of passionate but interior dialogue especially in the opening Moderato andthe slow movement; and though the finale is more extrovert the work ends back in quietness and rumination. This book contains the solo cello part and a piano reduction of the orchestral score.

Robert Schumann: Concerto for Cello and Orchestra (Concertstück): Cello and
Cello, Piano

Original Version - Edition for Cello and Piano. Schumann?s Cello Concerto Redisc...
(+)
Original Version - Edition for Cello and Piano. Schumann?s Cello Concerto Rediscovered. In her first Urtext edition for Edition Peters, internationally renowned cellist Josephine Knight reveals Robert Schumann?s original version of his Cello Concerto in A minor Op. 129 ? a piece he actually called a ?Concertstück? ? removing generations of inauthentic editorial interventions. This is the only available modern scholarly edition of the work as Schumann originally conceived it, and restores the text from October 1850, based on the composer?s manuscript held in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków. It is presented in a beautifully printed edition for cello with Schumann?s original piano reduction. Matching orchestral material is also available from the publisher. Only modern Urtext edition based on Schumann?s original 1850 manuscript Many new corrections and clarifications, especially to the cello part Scholarly preface detailing history of the work and this edition by editor Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music London Cello Part contains Josephine Knight's fingering and bowing suggestions Critical Commentary Matching orchestral material available separately from Edition Peters Recording of the Concertstück featuring Josephine Knight available from Dutton Robert Schumann?s tragic last years have mired many of his greatest works in unnecessary doubt. The story of the suppression of his Violin Concerto by well-meaning friends is relatively well-known. Few, however, know that the version of the Cello Concerto that is routinely heard today is so far from Schumann?s original conception of the work ? not only in details of phrasing and articulation, but also featuring a different ending with a bold final flourish from the cello. Composed in a burst of inspiration in two weeks in October 1850 shortly after he and Clara had moved to Düsseldorf, Schumann (who in 1850 was still in good health) never heard the piece performed. In an effort to promote a performance of the work, he gave the score to the cellist Robert Emil Bockmühl. Bockmühl made revisions that Schumann resisted, and the hoped-for performance never happened. Schumann?s health failed and he died aged just 46 in 1856. The Concerto, in an already substantially revised form, was premiered in 1860 but it was not given significant recognition until it was championed by Pablo Casals in the 20th century by which time (and since) the text for the work had accreted additions and alterations from generations of soloists. Now Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music, London has returned to the original 1850 manuscript of the work, which is in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków, to reveal Schumann?s original thoughts for the first time in a modern Urtext edition. The edition reflects Schumann?s original conception of the work as a Concertstück and restores Schumann?s musical text, free of posthumous interventions. It is presented in a beautifully printed edition for cello, with Schumann?s original piano reduction. Matching orchestral material is also available from the publisher. ?My ultimate wish,? says the editor, ?is to give performers both access to, and confidence that they are playing from, an edition which is a true representation of the piece in its original form, no matter how much more difficult this might be. I found that incorporating the changes enabled the piece to take on a completely different character ? one that is lighter and happier, even ?cheerful?, as Schumann himself described the work.?

(+)
Composed between 1967 and 1970 Tout Un Monde Lontain for Cello and Orchestra byHenri Dutilleux is one of the most important additions to the Cello repertoire in the 20th century. Lasting nearly half an hour each of the five movements are inspired by a poem of Charles Baudelaire: 1. Énigme / Enigma 2. Regard / Gaze 3. Houles / Surges 4. Miroirs / Mirrors 5. Hymne / Hymn The main theme initially introduced in the first part Énigme / Enigma is often replayed through the piece. The third part Houles / Surges is the most difficult to interpret with aScherzo part that's quite challenging and no break between the movements. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work winning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers among many others. His work also includes a Piano sonata two symphonies the Violin concerto 'L'arbre des songes' (The tree of dreams) and the String quartet 'Ainsi la nuit' (Thus the night).

für Violoncello und Klavier / for Violoncello and Piano-Camille Saint-Saëns Allegro Appassionato Op. 43 for Cello and Piano. Urtext edition score. At the beginning of the 1870s Saint-Saëns displayed a particular partiality for theVioloncello. He composed his first Cello sonata in December 1872 immediately after having completed the first Cello concerto. It was presumably directly after this that he wrote the Allegro Appassionato for Celloand Piano op. 43 that also appeared in a version for Orchestra three years later. We do not know why he wrote the work but it is likely that after having written two weighty works for Cello Saint-Saëns wanted towrite something ?easier? that was also suitable as an encore. In this Henle Urtext edition David Geringas has kindly provided the fingering and bowing for the brilliant Cello part.

Invocation was composed in 1911 and first performed on May 2nd of that year in the Queen's Hall London by May Mukle with the New Symphony Orchestra conducted by Landon Ronald. The work received several performances with Piano accompaniment before 1914 but with the public success of The Planets it became one of many works that Holst never had time to revise or publish. A certain amount of editing of dynamics and phrasing has been necessary and the Piano reduction has occasionally been slightly adjusted to match the orchestral accompaniment more closely. The separate Cello part has been edited by Julian Lloyd-Webber.

(+)
Haydn’s Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra in C major (Hob. VIIb:1) was probably composed between 1762 and 1765 when he was already director of music to Prince Esterh zy. It may have been writtenfor the cellist in the court Orchestra Joseph Weigl (1740-1820) for whom Haydn most likely also wrote the solo Cello parts in his early symphonies. Weigl was a member of the Esterh zy ensemble from 1761 to 1769 andthereafter served as a principle cellist in various Viennese ensembles. The concerto was rediscovered by Oldrich Pulkert who in 1961 found an eighteenth-century manuscript copy (Prag National Museum Fonds Radenin) andpublished the concerto in 1962. Previously the existence of this piece was known only through Haydn’s entry in his private list of works (the so-called ‘Entwurf’ [‘draft’] catalogue). The Orchestral setting ismodest: besides the Strings (with a non-obligato Bassoon doubling the Bass part) there are two Oboes and two Horns which are reserved almost exclusively for the tutti passages. This Piano reduction is based on the text givenin the complete edition of Haydn’s works as edited by the Joseph Haydn Institute Cologne (Joseph Haydn Werke Series III Vol.2 with Preface and Critical Report published by G. Henle Verlag Munich 1981). The Cello partin the Piano reduction is identical to that of the complete edition and thus follows the Prague source as closely as possible even in the expression marks and in certain peculiarities of notation.

In memory of Christopher Rowland. Originally a concerto for Cello and chamber orchestra now for Cello with a Piano reduction of the orchestral part. The concerto is in four movements which are played without a break: Meditation Intermezzo Toccata-Scherzo and Song. The work lasts for some 18 minutes and was scored for two oboes two horns timpani (doubling tubular bells) and strings(found here in a Cello/Piano form). It is organised in one large arch-shaped structure with two fast inner movements flanked by two outer slow ones. The solo cello opens the work reflectively and introduces core melodic material which is continuously developed throughout theconcerto. Gradually the strings enter then wind and timpani and build a pyramid twelve-note chord at the peak of which there is a dramatic climax. The music then subsides (solo cello again) but links to the two faster middle movements. The second movement Intermezzo has an ABA structure and in its middle section quotes the opening of Shostakovich's Third String Quartet (written in the same year as Christopher Rowland was born!). Indeed the ghost of Shostakovich looms large throughout the concerto in more ways than one. The Toccata-Scherzo is energetic and rhythmically-charged again using an ABA structure. Here the writing for solo cello is quite virtuosic but not I hope in a shallow sense. The music builds inexorably towards a powerful climax underpinned by the opening twelve-note chord's re-appearance together with a violent outburst from the timpani at which point a tonal resolution (on G) arrives through a pianissimo held chord on strings which leads directly to the final movement - Song. And so the music arrives at its emotional heart through a simple melody (present in other forms throughout the work) announced by solo cello at the very top of its register against a quiet backdrop of horns and strings. A solo oboe enters with cello in canonic reply and all the time the music builds in texture and

Its four movements mainly ternary are as listed below: - Allegro (Tempo di Marcia) - Cavatine - Ballabile - Finale Pierre Fournier partly helped Francis Poulenc to compose the Cello part as this latter was not a specialist of this instrument. (+)
Hungarian Rondo was composed by Zoltán Kodály in December 1917, drawing on material from the incidental music he had written for Zsigmond Móriczs play Pacsirtaszó (Skylarking). The rondo form is shaped out of four new-style Hungarian folk songs and an instrumental dance melody. Kodály prepared the piece in two somewhat different versions, one for two clarinets, two bassoons and string orchestra, and the other for cello and piano. The orchestral version received its first performance in Vienna on 12 January 1918 at a 'historical concert' organized by the War Ministry of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The cello version was premi?red by Miklós Zsámboky and Ottó Herz at the Budapest Academy of Music on 4 November 1927. Neither version appeared in print in the composers lifetime. The version for string orchestra was edited in 1976 by Ferenc Farkas and István Máriássy (and is distributed as a hire material under the order number K-1). The cello version appears here in print for the first time. The publication is based on the composers surviving manuscript and a contemporary manuscript copy of this. The fingerings are by the editor. / Violoncelle Et Piano

Par AHO KALEVI. Kalevi Aho's (b. 1949) concerto no. 2 for cello and orchestra (2013) is in five movements performed without a break. It begins with a swinging Berceuse, followed by a very quick, virtuosic Presto in 5/8 time. The heart of the concerto is the cadenza-like third movement, Adagio, dominated throughout by the soloist. A fairly short Allegretto is followed by the closing Epilogue. This has flashbacks to the opening movement, and they lead to a cadenza in which the soloist plays only flageolet notes and pizzicatos. The concerto ends with a virtuosic coda in 5/8 time evocative of the second movement. Arto Noras gave the concerto its first performance with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Osmo Vänskä in Naantali on June 5, 2014. It was a joint commission from the Naantali Music Festival and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. This product consists of the solo part (18 pages) and piano reduction by Kari Vehmanen (62 pages) - have a look inside by clicking “sample”. The concerto is scored for a fairly small orchestra. The instrumentation is 2(II=afl)2(II=ca)2(II=bcl)2-2200-bar-02-str and the orchestral material is available for hire from the publisher. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano
