Par JOUBERT CLAUDE-HENRY. Le premier volume de cette méthode s'adressait aux élèves débutants - ce deuxième volume est destiné aux élèves à partir du milieu du 1er cycle. Il est divisé en 14 'grandes leçons'. Chaque leçon peut faire l'objet d'un travail d'au moins deux semaines... La leçon 13 (variations de Mozart) peut être utilisée comme une sorte de recueil d'études. Les grandes difficultés solfégiques qu'elle présente ne sont pas fortuites. Il semble indispensable que la découverte de nouveaux rythmes et de nouvelles écritures (les ornements par exemple) s'effectue au sein de la classe d'instrument, découverte portée par des textes de la plus grande qualité (Mozart...). Cette remarque s'applique également à la Siciliana de Haendel ou au Concerto per flautino de Vivaldi. L'objectif de cet ouvrage est d'enseigner à chaque élève une méthode de travail. Les quatre pages qui composent chaque leçon obéissent à une construction logique que l'auteur a cherché à rendre perceptible. Tous les doigtés ne sont pas indiqués - apprendre à trouver de bons doigtés est une formation indispensable dès le début des études instrumentales. L'invention est un fil conducteur important de cette méthode. Redisons-le : il ne s'agit pas de récréation, mais d'un élément fort et fondateur de l'éducation musicale et technique d'un violoncelliste. Ainsi chaque leçon propose : - un prélude, dont il faut inventer tout ou partie, - un exercice d'invention. On trouvera quelques conseils destinés aux élèves, sur les coups d'archet, les doigtés, les démanchés, etc. - ils ne peuvent en aucun cas remplacer ceux du professeur... On a préféré commencer par l'extension arrière du premier doigt, plus aisée, peut-être, que l'extension avant pour laquelle toute la main est sollicitée. Mais le professeur pourrait inverser les leçons 2 et 3...
