Par DVORAK ANTONIN. This study score is based on the score and complete performance material of Dvorák's famous B minor Cello Concerto (BA 9045) edited by Jonathan Del Mar and published in 2011. In addition the study score contains a Foreword by Dvorák scholar Jan Smaczny. Like every other major 19th-century cello concerto, Dvorák's concerto resulted from a collaboration between the composer and a virtuoso musician. Several passages in Dvorák's autograph were written by the cellist Hanus Wihan but Bärenreiter's edition now reveals that some details in the orchestral parts are also in his writing, showing just how closely the two musicians were working together. The editor Jonathan Del Mar has conscientiously examined every available source, including two that have hitherto been either ignored or crucially undervalued. His research has led to a benchmark edition that reconstructs, for the first time since its initial publication in 1896, Dvorák's definitive version of the solo part. Il s'agit d'une oeuvre particulièrement représentative du genre de peinture qui a pris son essor pendant le Xe et XIe siècles sous le règne de la dynastie des Song du Nord (960-1127) et qui place la peinture chinoise sous le signe de l'unité retrouvée. Le style 'nordiste', inauguré par Ching Hao et Kuan T'ung se trouve porté à son point de tension extrême par Fan K'uan (fl. 990-1020) dont le Voyage par-delà les fleuves et les monts figure et résume la peinture des grands maîtres classiques de cette époque. L'art du trait calligraphique s'applique au traitement des parois et des surfaces, tout comme les rides en goutte d'eau servent à renforcer les effets de hauteur. Il existe, dans cette toile, une certaine contradiction entre l'éloignement des choses et le caractère abrupt d'un mur primordial qui s'impose avec une évidence absolue. On voit une imposante falaise rocheuse s'arracher d'un abîme et s'élancer jusqu'au ciel, comme un surgissement de l'inaccessible, surplombant un paysage escarpé que vient encore aiguiser le relief âpre et tourmenté de la végétation du premier plan. A la verticale, une broussaille de forêts lointaines semble agrippée aux sommets. Sur la droite, la chute vertigineuse d'une cascade tombant des hauteurs se déroule comme un ruban de soie. En avant-plan, un groupe de rochers laisse entr'apercevoir, plus bas, une caravane de mules dont le trait presqu'imperceptible laisse pressentir l'insignifiance de l'être humain face à l'immensité de la nature. On notera aussi le style sévère et dépouillé de ce paysage majestueux, son allure austère et solennelle qui souligne le caractère sacré des montagnes - la demeure des dieux - dans la peinture monumentale de paysage des Song du Nord. L'altitude est le véritable personnage de cette oeuvre célèbre, une peinture sur soie, d'encre et de couleurs légères, qui est conservée au Musée national du Palais de Taipei, à Taïwan. J'ai cherché à rendre ce sentiment plénier de la nature au grand orchestre, en sorte que l'articulation du souffle ne soit jamais interrompue par des notations accidentelles ou des velléités de développement. La pièce se déroule d'un seul tenant, comme une trame élémentaire, à l'image d'une continuité où toute interruption est arbitraire. Elle est parcourue d'un seul rythme enveloppant des tensions opposées - ascension et suspens, émergence et pesanteur. Une association instrumentale y domine, celle du pupitre des clarinettes allié à celui des trombones, avec des modes de jeu qui projettent les trombones dans l'extrême grave et diffractent le son de la clarinette en un tremblement de multiphoniques. Deux compositeurs, Ivàn Solano, clarinettiste, et Dominique Delahoche, tromboniste, ont bien voulu me guider dans cet inventaire des nouvelles ressources instrumentales. Il est difficile de parler de la forme de l'oeuvre, puisqu'il s'agit d'une transformation incessante, constitutive, à l'instar d'une forme-flux sans cesse renaissante et tendue vers un perpétuel effort d'intégration et de condensation. La forme n'est plus qu'une puissance obscure et négative qui se confond avec le rythme de la couleur ou de la masse. Une toile de fond 'd'harmonie-timbre', constamment dressée, suggère l'étendue et la profondeur, et figure, si l'on veut, une sorte de fond spatial qui serait l'espace même du paysage. Les seuls événements qui scandent le processus sont des 'coulées de forces' qui excèdent toute limite définie et suggèrent des régimes dynamiques variés. Par HAENDEL GEORG FRIEDRICH. ?Giulio Cesare in Egitto? is by far Handel?s most frequently performed opera owing its success not least to its subject matter, one of the best known love stories in world history. Already during Handel?s lifetime the popular work was often staged and therefore adapted by Handel for each of the performance conditions. The editor Hans Dieter Clausen has succeeded in editorially defining and practically presenting these adaptations ? essentially four versions ? on the basis of a meticulous study of the sources within the framework of the ?Halle Handel Edition?. The new edition allows for a performance of each of the four versions. The version of 1725 is particularly noteworthy because Handel newly devised the role of Sesto for the famous tenor Francesco Borosini. The libretto shows the Roman dictator Cesar in a friendly light. He instructs his enemy, the Egyptian tyrant Tolomeo, how to treat adversaries: he reconciles the widow and son of his enemy Pompeo who was murdered by Tolomeo: he is generous and just, hands on, but also diplomatic, thoughtful, aware of the limits of his power, and susceptible for art and nature. However, the actual protagonist of the opera is Cleopatra. In a masterly way Handel develops her character musically. In his extensive Foreword Hans Dieter Clausen not only decribes the genesis, historical background, reception and the edition of the opera, he also examines the musical and dramaturgical reworking of individual numbers in ?Giulio Cesare?. Handel was such an expert in adapting arias for new purposes and other characters that he did not only meet the needs at hand but often the new version surpassed the original. In this way, the reader gains, in passing, a well-founded insight into Handel?s work methods when designing and redevising his characters. Par BARTOK BELA. With the “ Concerto for Orchestra , ” Henle inaugurates a series of affordable study scores based on the text of the Bartók Complete Edition. When Bartók received the commission to compose this piece from Serge Koussevitsky in May 1943, it meant not only financial support, but also an important creative impetus for the gravely ill composer. By October, the five-movement concerto, which Koussevitsky enthusiastically dubbed “the best orchestral work of the last 25 years, ” was already complete. The first performances in the winter of 1944–45 were also very successful. Nevertheless, Bartók was moved to set down an alternate ending, which thecomposer, who passed away in September 1945, would never be destined to hear. Bartók specialist Klára Móricz includes both versions in her edition and summarises the history and transmission of the “Concerto for Orchestra” in a fascinating foreword. Par CASABLANCAS BENET. Shade and Darkness, lasting some 12:30 minutes, was co-commissioned by the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical and the Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada. The work is inspired by Turner's famous painting of the same name, subtitled 'The Night Before the Flood', although this does not imply any programmatic or even less descriptive intention, beyond the composer's admiration for the painter, and for the richness of tones and chiaroscuro, subtlety in the treatment of pictorial matter, and the dynamism and emotional force present in his work, to whose depth John Ruskin alludes: 'Nuance is in Turner, first of all, a beautiful aid to the great impression to be conveyed, but it is neither the source nor the essence of that impression; it is little more than a visible melody... preparing the feelings for the reading of the mysteries of God.' The score, generous in expressive contrasts, explores the ductility and richness of possibilities of the strings, with a very diversified use of textures, densities and colours. The formal arrangement describes a wide ternary arc, consisting of two slow and often static sections - not without ominous foreboding - and a more lively central part, punctuated by occasional turbulence and dazzling flashes of timbre, culminating in a powerful climactic process. In the final bars the four voices of the classical quartet fleetingly emerge, as a tribute to Günter Pichler, founder and member of the Alban Berg Quartet, to whom the score is dedicated, and who conducted the premiere of the work in front of the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España on 24 and 25 June 2014 at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid and in the Patio de los Mármoles del Hospital Real in Granada. / Date parution : 2022-03-15/ Répertoire / Petit Orchestre

Par TYSHAWN SOREY. Tyshawn Sorey\'s For George Lewis draws inspiration from The Will to Adorn, a dense work for chamber orchestra by the composers friend, collaborator and mentor George Lewis. Where Lewis\'s score is frenetic, however, Sorey\'s enters into a meditative stasis for most of its 51-minute duration, slowly accumulating and breaking down different sonorities of harmony and colour. Alarm Will Sound, for whom the piece was composed, gave the world premiere in November 2019 at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, conducted by Alan Pierson, who also worked closely with the composer to edit this score. Like its companions Nos. 90 and 91, Haydn's Symphony #92 in G major was written in 1789. All three symphonies were commissioned in 1788 by Prince Kraft Ernst von Oettingen-Wallerstein, who was to be granted exclusive ownership. However, Haydn first sold the works to the Parisian Masonic lodge Société Olympique and was thus unable to fulfil his obligation to send the autograph scores to the prince. The symphony received its nickname 'Oxford? in the 19th century, probably in connection with a performance that took place when Haydn received an honorary doctorate from Oxford University in 1791. / Orchestre

Couverture Rigide. Par GLUCK CHRISTOPH WILLIBALD. For his Paris 'Cythère assiégée?, Gluck drew on his eponymous opéra comique from 1759, transforming it into an opéra-ballet. The libretto which was expanded by Charles Simon Favart was adapted: Gluck added recitative passages, reworked individual sections and also added his own compositions, modifying them in parts. By March 1775, the compositional work had progressed sufficiently for Gluck to leave behind a copy of the score as he departed from Paris. However, he was unable to supervise rehearsals or be present at the premiere (1 August 1775) or any of the subsequent 21 performances. Due to these particular circumstances, three versions of the work are to be distinguished: the original version, the performed version and the printed version. This edition of 'Cythère assiégée? contains the original version of the main part and is printed here for the first time. The reconstruction which was necessary in order to determine the original form of this opera draws on all orchestral parts, the printed score and with regard to a large gap in Act III, pages were taken from the score copy. The four-part appendix includes the changes made to this score copy, sections that deviate from the printed score as well as the final version of Act III, also from the printed score. The last part of the appendix also presents a Divertissement in six movements by Berton, which is only available as a rare contemporary set of printed parts.
