Unknown until their discovery was announced in 1971 by Péter Várnai in an article in Die Musikforschung, this set of six suites for solo violin, published in 1696, is in all likelihood a second edition of, or second collection to his First Dozen Allemandes, Courantes, Sarabands, and Gigues for Solo Violin without Basso Continuo published in 1682 which are considered lost. Along with his suite for solo violin published in 1683 in Le Mercure Galant, these suites for unaccompanied violin are the first in their medium and undoubtedly served as an inspiration for Bach?s Six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin.This edition is a modern transcription of Westhoff?s unique notation and provides editorial fingering and bowing suggestions. A facsimile of the only extant 1696 publication, which is housed in the Somogyi Károly Városi és Megyei Könyvtár in Szeged, Hungary, is included in the back of this edition for reference. The son of a wealthy plantation owner and a slave, he rose to unimaginable heights in French society thanks to his excellence in many things including math, literature, and fencing, but most of all, music. He rose to become one of the most popular violinists and composers in France, even hired to provide music lessons for the imperious Marie Antoinette who would become the last queen of France. Bologne's amazing life story came to life in the 2022 film Chevalier. In a conversation with the violinist Peter Herresthal, we touched on the “invitation” in the score of Ligeti’s Violin concerto to provide a cadenza for the work. Peter suggested that I answer this invitation and I was happy to accept. I followed all the composer’s directions exactly: the cadenza may use material from all five movements, and should be of “hectic” character throughout. I also aimed to write a cadenza of which the closing orchestral coda would be an inevitable result. (Thomas Adès) The cadenza can also be composed by the soloist and can last up to 1-2 minutes. It should be hectic throughout (continuation of the appassionata agitato molto), but can incorporate melodic material ad lib. from all five movements. Towards the end, the tempo should be prestissimo with alternating arco and left hand pizz. in mad virtuosity. The cadenza has no real end and is suddenly interrupted by the orchestra at R (as agreed between soloist and conductor). This interruption occurs suddenly 'as if unprepared'. The soloist should at this point be playing in high positions (on the top string) at maximum velocity. The solo violin abruptly falls silent on the entry of the high woodblock. Over the wonderfully enjoyably years of conducting, there have been so many fine encounters with the Mozart Violin Concertos - mostly with very gifted players like Menuhin, Oistrakh, Stern and, more recently, Cho-Liang (Jimmy) Lin. There have, however, been instances (only a few, I'm pleased to say) when I've come, in the performances, to dread the onslaught of those cadenzas, which sound like a send up of Paganini, or belong to the wrong century with a plethora of double-stopping lasting too long, venturing into tonalities Mozart would not have recognized. After several performances with Jimmy came a request from him for suitable cadenzas that showed off the solo violin while commenting on Mozart's music he had just played. They worked, and Sony asked us to record them all and, with the welcome inclusion of Jaime Laredo, all the rest of Mozart's violin and orchestra repertoire.
