In the audience was the 17-year-old Hungarian violin virtuoso and budding composer Jenö Hubay. After the performance Hubay started writing his Carmen Fantasy from memory. The following season for his debut recital in Paris, he included his newly created composition. It is a lyrical work of great beauty and brilliance. Hubay combined his career of a concertizing virtuoso, composer and violin pedagogue. At the Royal Conservatory in Brussels he became the successor of Vieuxtemps and Wieniawski. Later, Franz Liszt invited Hubay to lead the violin department in the newly created Budapest Music Academy. He created the world-renowned Hungarian school of violin playing. His student, Franz von Vecsey, recorded theCarmen Fantasy in 1904 at age 11! His other students included Joseph Szigeti, Zoltán Szekely, Sándor Végh, Endre Gertler, György Garay and many more. Hubay was a very active composer, creating over 120 works including operas, ballets, concertos, songs and instrumental compositions. Pablo de Sarasate wrote his Carmen Fantasy in 1882. It is a composition of drama and passion, written with his unparalleled brilliance for violin writing. Ernest Bloch's Sonata For Violin And Piano is a challenging but extremely rewarding work. The first movement's tempo marking is Agiatato and the music is in turn turbulent and aggressive passionate and sorrowful but the prevailing mood is one of grave disquiet. The sense of unrest continues in the second movement although it is marked Molto quieto)and is mostly contemplative by nature. The last movement marked Moderato begins with the tolling of bells in the piano part. The violin is assertive although less aggressive than it was in the first movement. A tender epilogue follows this and dies away peacefully bringing the work to its conclusion.

As a passionate composer organist and ornithologist many of Olivier Messiaen's works incorporate these three elements. However he took a different stance for his Thème et Variations for Violin and Piano composing it as a wedding present for his first wife Claire Delbos in 1932. The couple gave its first performance during the same year. Admitted to the Paris Conservatoire at the mere age of eleven Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was an outstanding pupil winning many prizes. Thème et Variations was composed shortly after his appointment as titular organist at the Sainte Trinité church inParis and is often considered to be characteristic of his famous Quatour pour la fin du temps. Made up of a theme and five variations it begins simplistically before entering the complex variations. The theme is composed in common time and at a moderate tempo. Each variation varies in dynamics time signature tempo tonality and rhythm among other elements; however Messiaen cleverly retains suggestions of the theme all throughout. Challenging as it is Thème et Variations is an exciting varied and compelling performance piece for all advanced violinists.

Henri Casadesus was passionate about early instruments, as we know from a number of photographs showing him with viola d?amore, the subject of a manual he wrote entitled Tecnique de la viole d?amour. The Concerto en Ut mineur was first published in 1947 by Mica Salabert. The first edition gives the so-called ?original? part for solo violocello together with the score which, according to the preface, has been adapted for viola or cello or violin by Casadesus. However, stylistic analysis of the piece, together with some musicological research carried out after the appearance of the first edition reveals that the ?original? version for violoncello, on which the adaptation was supposed to be based, cannot be attributed to Johann Christian Bach, but is rather a work imitating his style written two centuries later. In spite of this, Concerto en Ut mineur encountered considerable success and continues to be studied and performed by both violinists and violoncellists today.

Josef Suk (1824-1935) était un peu dans l'ombre des deux compositeurs tchèques célèbre Antonin Dvorak et Smetana. Par VIEUXTEMPS HENRI. Le violoniste et compositeur belge Henri Vieuxtemps (1820-1881) était l'un des plus importants virtuoses du violon au XIXe siècle. Des tournées de concerts l'ont mené à travers l'Europe et les États-Unis ; pendant quelques années seulement, il a occupé un poste permanent de musicien de cour à Saint-Pétersbourg. A partir de 1864, il a enseigné au Conservatoire de Paris, et à partir de 1871 au Conservatoire de Bruxelles, où le célèbre violoniste Eugène Ysaÿe était son élève. Le présent volume contient des ?uvres connues et des raretés de son répertoire de concert, notamment les Romances op. 7, Souvenir d'Amérique op. 17 (variations de la célèbre mélodie 'Yankee doodle') et l'?uvre souvent jouée 'Ballade et Polonaise' op. 38.
